When to kick

Unfortunately, the fury warrior came with enough baggage to crush ten porters.
Rude? You bet. Racist? Oh yeah. Constantly going off on tirades about his job, his girlfriend, and any other subject in party chat (we used the in game voice client... oh, was that a mistake) while other people were trying to call out where the next spawn point was? You know it. And despite the fact that he was sporting full S2 gear, he couldn't kill an add in time to save our lives. Half the time he was nowhere near the adds at all, running off in some random direction as if his sense of location had been replaced with Folger's Crystals. And by the way, yes, we noticed. Considering that I've done that job in blues, and this wasn't even a heroic, we were faced with a choice.
We could put the warlock, who seemed very good at her job, on adds full time and stick the warrior on DPSing the bosses, or we could kick the warrior and get someone else to come in and DPS. Now, ordinarily, I'd vote to keep the guy just because he came in good faith. But the combination of his ineptitude and his rather horrible personality (not to mention the way he started hitting on our DPS the second they spoke and revealed their gender in between tirades about how his girlfriend is a bad healer) sealed the deal and I booted him. Got some nasty tells, ignored them, went about my day. We got an undergeared rogue friend to come in and DPS on the boss, to be honest we might have been able to four man it (that warlock was really good) and got it done.
However, I always look back on my decisions and wonder if they were the right ones. Should I have kicked him? Should I have just moved him to the boss and ignored what a loudmouthed pain he was? Was I expecting too much out of him since as a warrior I've done the fight myself? It's hard knowing when to kick someone and when to just let it ride. I mean, it's just a game, yeah, but at the same time the fact that it's just a game means I'm playing to have fun, not listen to someone's unpleasant personality unravel while lizards try and eat my face.
So I turn to you for your opinions. When do you kick people from groups? Are you overly tolerant or are you quick to boot, perhaps too quick? What's the general consensus on these matters?

NO PANTS DAY! :D
Xonate Jun 18th 2008 11:32AM
Haha, I don't suppose you're on Silver Hand? I have a good friend that plays a paladin tank and she won't wear pants anymore to tank most heroics because she seriously won't take enough damage if she's wearing all her gear. It's kind of hilarious, but also sort of shows some flaws in Blizzard's tanking designs. And "I don't need 'em" is something that sounds exactly like what she would say... hmmm..
Aracross Jun 18th 2008 11:31AM
Actually, thats hilarious.
Milktub Jun 18th 2008 11:31AM
Pants? Who needs pants?
I kicked a rogue who had no trinkets. None. Not even the ubiquitous Carrot on a Stick, Bladefists Breath, or PvP trinkets. Nothing. I asked him about it ... "trinkets don't do anything for my dps". Bye bye!
THJ Jun 18th 2008 11:44AM
Hahahaha, that would probably prompt a ginvite from me. I wish I came across more people like that on my server. "Pants?" "Don't need em." Granted, he or she would have to prove themselves during the run, but that's awesome.
Ichthus Jun 18th 2008 12:15PM
Yeah, if it was a paladin tank, they can out-gear the content which causes issues on how well they can perform and usually take their pants off (or similar item to lower stats and bring it back into the same realm as the content). I have two friends who are tankadins (well, one is a healadin with a really nice tanking set for when she decides to run 5-mans respecced as prot) and regularly run into this issue when dealing with lower end instances.
Just about any other class with no pants? uhm... err... no.
Breck Jun 18th 2008 12:27PM
Paladins who out-gear an instance should have spell damage alternatives to their tanking gear, instead of just stripping down.
Just sayin'.

I've actually had to tank Ramps in full PvP gear to get enough rage to hold aggro. My normal tank set, I can't get any rage. We have another tank who just takes off his pants, it's fairly common.
Alchemistmerlin Jun 18th 2008 12:34PM
I would have done that run and, had we succeeded, I would have given Captain Pantless 5 gold.
ninjasuperspy Jun 18th 2008 12:34PM
Nah, it was a mage (or a lock. I can't honestly remember. Cloth wearing DPS). I don't know if he wanted to go commando under the robes or was just thinking "I'm a wild and crazy guy!" but the DPS slot did not stay open for very long.

My guilds main protadin tanks karazhan in a white wedding dress :P
LostOne Jun 18th 2008 11:21AM
I wouldn't have put up with him as long as you did.
Plethora Jun 18th 2008 11:23AM
yea, racist, rude and hitting on the woman would be an automatic kick in my book. I can put up with a bad player for one run, but that kind of social idiocy I don't have any tolerance for.
TeragX Jun 18th 2008 3:08PM
The way i see it, its wrong to boot people for just being bad at their job. Now if they are assholes, why are they still in the group. Even though playing w/ someone who's bad at their job is difficult, if its a nice guy then unless your an elitist, theres no reason to boot him (unless of course this guy is REALLY BAD, like say hes in the wrong dungeon)

"...running off in some random direction as if his sense of location had been replaced with Folger's Crystals" may be the funniest line I've read in weeks.
p-diddy Jun 18th 2008 12:36PM
I was looking for the WoWHead link to Folger's Crystals when I first read it...
Rydolomo Jun 18th 2008 5:28PM
"Folger's Crystals
These magical crystals are extremely tiny and are often carried in a soft leather bag. They carry a rich and satisfying smell of fresh coffee. Each use of Folger's Crystals (2d20 uses in a found bag) will magically change the liquid contents of one container, no larger than 1 cubic foot in volume, into steaming delicious coffee. The coffee remains warm for 24 hours at the perfect drinking temperature and for each serving of coffee (assume one serving is one normal coffee cup sized drink). Any liquid is acceptable for use with Folger's Crystals and becomes wholly beneficial to the imbiber regardless of what the original liquid was.
An imbiber of this elixer will regain 1 hp. Up to eight servings of coffee can be imbibed in one day, further servings will not result in healing. Drinking eight servings within the same hour will bestows a haste effect for 10 rounds.
Folger's Crystals are created in batches of 40 servings.

It also depends on the internal pecking order. If I am the fifth in a group of friends or guild-mates, I'll be much more tolerant of jackassery, even when I am tanking and am the nominal group-leader. I'll just never run with em again, and maybe even tell em why.
Likewise, if the group is a full PuG with 5 strangers, I won't do the auto-kick. But one whisper from someone else about behavior and BOOT! Gone baby gone! (with a whispered explanation that respect for other players gets you better groups and better gear.)
But if I have buddies in the run, or if we're rounding out a small guild-run with a pugged fifth, then the first sign of jackassery gets the boot. When it's people I know, as tank and nominal leader, I have two jobs: keeps aggro off the healer, and protect the fun-quotient of my friends. And, the people who are my friends ARE my friends in part because of my willingness to take a moral stance on racist/sexist/idiotic babble.

So I turn to you for your opinions. When do you kick people from groups?
-I dont normally kick people, I just play, and ignore them...then again, i do not get onto ventrilo etc to often
I occassionally get the players who like to tell me how to play my class (resto shaman) but I just ignore them, if they know so much, let them do the healing i normally say...
and most of the time, its them that is screwing up the instance because they are undergeared
