Insider Trader: Leatherworking in alpha, and profession changes for patch 2.4.3
Although there is information being leaked about the upcoming expansion Wrath of the Lich King, because of the alpha testing that is currently underway, it is too soon to tell what will make it into the final copy, and what will not. Furthermore, most things will be changed, and there are details that may never be leaked until, of course, release.Still, it is a valuable experience to peer into Blizzard's process of designing, reforming, and progressing the game's professions. This week, Insider Trader will focus on analyzing the tentative progression of the leatherworking trade.
In addition, we'll take a brief look at professions-related changes in the upcoming patch 2.4.3. While mounts at level 30 and Haris Pilton might be first in your mind, Blizzard isn't overlooking the trade sector this round.
Leatherworking kits in alpha testing
Kits have been the staple of the leatherworker's bag of tricks since before the craftsman has access to any talent trees. They offer cheap leveling, additional armor or other buffs, and have the market cornered when it comes to "enchants" for the leg slot.
Kits are commonly consumed in quantity as the craftsman changes gear, hands them out to friends, and sells excess on the auction house. It is not surprising then that it seems that Wrath will bring a whole new set of kits, although with a surprising twist that I hope doesn't make it to the expansion.
Currently, it appears as though the kits can only be used on items in your possession, in your bank, bags, mail, or on your character. In addition, using a kit on an item will bind it to you, preventing you from selling it.
All of the kits leaked thus far have this condition forced upon them. I personally would not mind it for some of the best kits. After all, each profession has equivalent bind on pick-up items that can only be enjoyed by those who actually take the time and make the investment to fully level that profession.
Still, with eight kits leaked thus far, I am beginning to worry. Will I need to change from Scryers to Aldor to get the proper leg kits for my character? Will some of my alts end up dropping their professions in favor of leatherworking, if other professions do not get similar exclusive bonuses that make it worth their while?
Will my auction profits take a hit? Will I have no cheap kits to help me level my leatherworking to the new skill cap? Questions, questions. Let's hope at least that the kits will be items that can be traded and sold, and used by non-leatherworkers. If this were the case, the only thing it would prevent us from doing is attaching a kit to a bind on equip world drop, and then selling it on the auction house. Considering most people who do this choose the wrong kit anyway, I'd be happy to see the option removed.
Of course, it is entirely possible that Blizz implemented this for the alpha testing solely, and will remove it for most, if not all, kits before the expansion goes live.
In fact, I suspect this might be true, as the leaked information shows one kit that adds 70 attack power and 18 critical strike rating, and yet another that adds 100 attack power and 36 critical strike rating. Although both will bind your item to you, it seems logical that the less valuable kit might, in the end, not.
Along these lines, I wonder if some of the leg armor kits from The Burning Crusade will be changed to work in the same manner, assuming that Blizzard is intending these items to go forward as-is.
Drums in alpha testing
Drums were introduced in the first expansion, and were a big hit. In fact, many raiding guilds began requiring certain characters to drop one of their professions and pick up leatherworking, just so they could have certain drums going during raids. Nihilum was one of the guilds that made this change.
Drums are a leatherworkers-only item, and let us apply one of a number of helpful buffs to all party members in range. So far, we will see an upgrade to drums we've already seen, and have been using, as well as an ever-useful set that will increase hit rating for the party. Hopefully we'll see even more new drums in the future.
In fact, it would be great if we were given more unique and fun items. Personally, I'd like a leather reclining chair, a trench coat, and some sort of hammock or cot for naps. You know what? I'd even settle for better elemental shaman pieces, especially early on, and some love for the Moonkin. They wear leather too Blizz!
Test realm notes for patch 2.4.3
There are quite a few interesting changes on the horizon for crafters as of this upcoming patch. First of all, there are a few fixes. Juicy bear burgers will correctly be buffing your healing as well as spell damage, as was originally intended. Green quality gems will be popping up in your mining nodes once more, and the Philosopher's Stone will require 200 Alchemy.
Jewelcrafters will be pleased to note that the beneficial effects cast by their trinkets can no longer be dispelled, which should make their usage more common and viable, especially in pvp.
Tailors will find the most changes in this patch, and might want to start working on their Sporeggar reputation, because Mycah will be able to teach you how to make 28 slot herb bags. At Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris, you'll find two new recipes, a jacket and a pair of pants. In addition, the cooldown for regular mooncloth is getting removed.
It's always nice to see little details being added, and minor adjustments being made. I'm also excited to add new patterns to my collection. Will you be on the test realms checking out these changes?
What changes to your professions would you like to see prior to Wrath, as well as with it? Are you thinking about changing professions prior to the expansion?

The change only affects twinking. No big deal.
Previously the only logical reason to pre-apply a kit was to give a twink some over-enchanted gear and that kinda stuff was out of whack with the level requirements for Enchants... so this is a perfectly logical change to stop a L19 rogue from having +100 agi and +50stam on their pants in WSG. Nothing to whine about for sure, and no real worry for anyone that's not trying to twink out a character as far as I can tell.
They're not going to make all kits BOP. Stop overreacting.

I would LOVE to see BoP leatherworking kits. My rogue is a leatherworker who currently gets absolutely nothing from the profession except the ability to use drums. I've outgrown the Primalstrike set, and don't raid high enough for the Swiftstrike set.
I would love for leatherworkers to have high-grade armor kits they could sell, and superior-grade ones they can only craft for themselves for their own use on their own gear. Then regardless of what gear they get in endgame, the profession continues to be relevant and useful.
Heilig Jun 20th 2008 7:34PM
You're missing something major here. The kits themselves are not BoP. They can be sold on the AH. You just can't put a 72 stam patch on some armor and then sell THAT. This puts the armor patches squarely in the realm of high level characters, and only high level characrers.
Heilig Jun 20th 2008 7:37PM
Something else you missed that I just noticed was the MAJOR change to all drums that is currently in the alpha: Tinnitus. You can only be affected by a set of drums once every two minutes. No more rolling haste drums. Raiders can pick up their old professions again.

"No more rolling haste drums. Raiders can pick up their old professions again."
Please let this make it to the release version. I hate that so many guilds started to require people to do LW just for that. What a waste of a profession for a lot of us.
Starbrow Jun 20th 2008 8:13PM
As stated above, the kits themselves are NOT BoP, but when used, the item it's used on becomes soulbound. All kits are still tradable, and can still be used by anyone at the right level. This just kills twink leg enchanting.
As for drums, again the statement is correct that you now get a debuff from drums that prevents you from getting a drum buff for two minutes (the cooldown of drums, very appropriately). One LW per group will now be all you can do.
Shame you obviously missed this when you did your research, but if you bothered to just have a single look at the wotlk.wikidot.com you'd know...

I see what you did there. You posted two paragraphs which were redundant in order to passingly insult the blogger at the end, referring to a web site which has been down since this morning and won't be back until Monday, if then. Nice one.
Dariheian Jun 21st 2008 12:24AM
Dam right G. People are overcritical of bloggers here. What purpose did your writing aceive starbrow, other than enhance your ego?
On the otherhand, the bloggers told me something new. Not everyone obssesively collects every bit of wow info right off the bat, and some of us appreciate having it nicely collated for us.
You've come off looking like a tit through your comment, and my respect for the site has only been reinforced. Quite a fail on your behalf.

Honestly, if you're going to get paid to write things no matter if you want to call it blogging or journalism (one of which I went to school for and have a degree) there's at least some set of professional standards that is more or less expected.
It demeans the efforts of all serious bloggers who are journalists when the desire to get a post on a page outweighs any significant research. If you're going to write about WoW, and get paid for it, it's actually mostly to be expected that you have a superior understanding of the game and DO obsessively read any and all information that's showing up anywhere about it. If this were your personal blogspot or your livejournal then nobody's expecting much of anything from you. If you're being paid by AOL and you're posting on a blog called WoW Insider (the key being Insider which represents an above-average knowledge of the game to say the least) then yes I absolutely expect most of the posters here to know more than me about everything they post.
The reason people are critical, is because often times the posters here don't necessarily know more than the fans reading the blogs since people who are busy reading a WoW blog every day... tend to be the ones more obsessive about the game and more into things behind it. I'm not expecting Elitist Jerks type commentary (although that would be fantastic to see) but at the same time I think something a cut above the Blizzard forums is expected to say the least.

Thats nice.. but when are they going to change the Alchemy cooldowns to per item rather than global... Tailors can use theirs for each of the TBC cloth types (Spell, Shadow, and Primal Mooncloth), but I can only transmute one thing.. once every 20 hours?
WTB consistency in crafting, Blizzard...
jaladin Jun 21st 2008 2:40AM
Tailoring items have a much longer cool down, thus balancing it out.
Thorn Jun 21st 2008 3:04AM
Umm... that is consistency. Tailoring cooldowns are separated by their three specialities. Transmutation is one of the alchemy specialties.
Try again.
Wolftech Jun 21st 2008 10:24AM
Umm.. not that's not consistency... yes.. they are 'different' specializations but ANY tailor can make them. You just get a extra one when you make it. Your argument is that each is different when in reality, cloth is cloth. Applying the same consistency to Alchemy means at the very least, the Meta transmute and the primal transmutes should have different timers, but if you were to treat them equally(as you seem to do the cloth cooldown... which is way to long IMO), then a transmute is a transmute and all should have their own timers.
jaladin Jun 21st 2008 4:00PM
Ok, sounds like a plan, but the cooldowns will be extended to 3 days 21 hours each, to be consistent with the tailoring ones you seem so insistent on being on par with.
Wolftech Jun 22nd 2008 6:55PM
I can live with that as long as they are all individual cool downs like the cloth

I only care about Engineering. As a PvP Warrior, Engineering is pretty darn crappy. I haven't specialized because WotLK is just around the corner and there's no sense in committing myself before knowing if Goblin is going to turn into the "mandatory" Warrior spec.
Furthermore, the +Stamina on the Rocket Launcher (really the only good Engineering trinket for a Warrior) is easily found elsewhere, and a Madness card grants me buffs without a cooldown. The helmets are alright, but S4 is better than Furious Gizmatic (and I'll assume the other T1 Engineering helms), lacking only the stealth detection. And since *most* other semi-casuals like myself won't ever see the inside of Sunwell, the upgrade patterns for 5000g (when you can find them) are irrelevant.
I've been saving greens forever and a day to disenchant, but everytime I consider leveling an alt Enchanter to 35, I think about the plethora of greens and blues I can currently (and soon in WotLK) disenchant if I make my main an Enchanter. It would also let me drop Mining and pick up Herbalism to stock up for WotLK's new profession (and hey, free enchants).
Tell me about Engineering! It is without a doubt the most useless and least profitable profession unless you're a glutton for having trinkets misfire while sitting on a personal balance of 3.7g. The Mote Extractor is garbage! Tell me I will be rich and/or powerful, or be merciful and inform me of Engineering's planned continuing descent into crapdom and let me drop it.
Faar Jun 21st 2008 5:14AM
The mote extractor is NOT garbage. It gives you free motes at virtually no cost, provided you just go out looking for them. In that regard, it's no more garbage than say, the mining pick is if you never go out and mine.
Wolftech Jun 21st 2008 10:34AM
Sorry.. I have farmed TONS of primals with the mote extractor... far more then I could ever farming the elementals that drop them...
hmmm... lets see... 2-3 gas pockets per primal vs a random drop that maybe you see 1 in 3 kills on a given elemental....
And sure, you can get 'better stamina' from other places than the Goblin Rocket Launcher, but as it is one of the only single range pulls for Pallys, it is a great item. Add to that a nice supply of bombs give Pallys and Warrior a way to do AOE damage when it calls for it... and do I need to remind you of a little thing called a repairbot? And then there are all the cool little things like the robots, pets, and mounts.
So it doesn't work for you.. stop QQing and drop it. It works great for the rest of us.
dAnixx Jun 26th 2008 6:27PM
If u dont like engineering, change profession.
So Simple.
Def Wolf Jun 21st 2008 3:03AM
Oh yeah, to make mooncloth or primal mooncloth; us tailors have a 4 day cool down!!!! If you specialize in mooncloth you do get 2 pieces rather than just one; but still!! Nice to know that they are doing away with it on the regular mooncloth. Makes trying to make anything with any mooncloth too time consuming and costly to make.
