The Creamy GUI Center: Resurrected and back in action

No you're not seeing things, The Creamy GUI Center is back! As my first column back after such a long time I thought it would be a good idea to get reacquainted, and take a look at what all has changed in WoW's user interface while I was gone. Also, find out where I've been all this time, and where we're going as we take a sneak peak at what's in store for future editions. So grab a drink and get comfy as we once again take the plunge into the world of WoW's user interface and addons.
So, how you doing?
I know it's been a while since the last update of The Creamy GUI Center, and for that I apologize. The long and short of it is that I was diagnosed with skin cancer (warning: The wiki entry I linked to contains picture examples that some may find gross) around August of last year, and since then have undergone several procedures to treat it. The bad news is unfortunately half of my foot (where the cancer was) was amputated, and as you can imagine that took a while to heal from and adjust to. The good news is I'm now cancer free and eager to resume my life where I left it, particularly writing for WoW Insider. I tell you all this not as an excuse, or for sympathy, but because I want to be upfront and honest with you our reader. I know I'm possibly setting myself up by being so upfront with my private life, but I trust the community to make of it what you will. So that's the long and short of it, I thank you all for your understanding in this matter and for my editors for their patience during this whole ordeal and for the welcome back. One last thing before we move on, I'd like to thank my friends and family, particularly my parents for their support. So now you know where I've been, let's find out what new additions to WoW's user interface were added while I was gone.
A look back

One of the biggest changes implemented in the past few months has been the revamped combat log. While this has been a very positive and needed addition to the UI, it was not without its adjustment phase as it had several kinks Blizzard had to work out. Also, many players were frustrated that some popular addons had to be rewritten for the new combat log. That first week or two without our beloved addons such as Omen and damage meters reminded us just how much we've come to rely on them, for better or worse. Now that the dust has settled, not only do with have a much more customizable combat log, but addon authors can more easily tap into the log to display more detailed and accurate information. Expect to see a future column on how to get the most out of the combat log and addon alternatives soon.

With so many awesome addons out there, setting them all up and configuring them to your liking can be quite the task. Back in the day a lot of addons used /slash commands. (I'm talking to you flexbar!) Nowadays you usually only need to remember one /slash command to bring up a configuration and settings window, but if that's too hard Blizzard's got ya covered with the release of a new and improved interface settings window, complete with a section devoted to addons. With so many new options added over time to the default interface, the settings window was bursting at the seams. The new window divides the settings up in a much more readable fashion, but the best new feature is a dedicated area for user created addons. As long as addon
authors intend to use it, this is a one stop shopping area to configure all your addons. I'm not an addon author so I'm not sure what type of (if any) limitations the Blizzard window has, but I hope if an author would rather create their own settings window that they still use the Blizzard one as a jumping off point, for consistencies' sake if nothing else.
Finally, let's not forget all the small things Blizzard has also added In the past few months all classes received rudimentary tracking abilities to help find things around town easier, as well as blips on the minimap for quest givers along with your mouse cursor changing icons to show the type of NPC your mouse is over. One thing I wish they would allow is the ability to show grey quests from NPCs so the completionist in me will be happy. Other small but noticeable changes include a sparkle effect to items you can interact with, item cool down length in their tooltip, and more detailed auction house categories.
What's next for The Creamy GUI Center?
Now that we're caught up with what's been going on during my absence, what's next? Well I'm not gunna leave y'all hanging, I'll be back to business as usual starting next week with an in depth look at how to get the most out of the new combat log and alternative addons for it, followed by a comparison of inventory managers and bag addons. Grab a mining pick as we unearth topics of the past to see how some of the older reviewed addons have changed. What addons and interface concerns would you like to see covered? I'll be checking your comments for suggestions. Once again, thank you all for your understanding during my absence. I'm happy to be back and share my passion for World of Warcraft and the tools we use to play. See you next week!
Matthew will continue spending more time building the ultimate UI than actually playing his Hunter and assorted alts in his quest for usability nirvana. Need more for your addon and interface fix? My suggestions for inventory addons you might want to cover in your next article: Bagnon and Baud Manifest. I use both and without them, would probably spend twice the amount of time I currently do trying to sort through all the crap in my bags and bank. You might want to touch on the few addons I've seen so far that also help you manage the new guild banks. MobileGuildVault is the only one I've used so far, and while it's pretty basic, it's still helpful. I think Altoholic also might have some guild bank functionality, but I haven't explored it much yet.

i lost some functionality in my Ag Unitframes addon a week or so ago, and have been shopping for something to replace it...
Pitbull is tough to configure
X-Perl is oldschool
Ag is still not 2.4 compliant
What else is out there? I want to find a good unitframe addon without totally having to spend days learning how to touch each little thing (Pitbull, i'm looking at u).

I've found the default layout of Pitbull to be more than adequate. All you really have to do is place the frames, and you're good to go. Then, once you have the basic layout of where the frames should be, it's really not that hard to figure out how to customize them. There's even a handy little "Open DogTag Help" button at the bottom of every configuration screen that accepts DogTag tags. From there you can look up any/all tags in the DogTag library simply by browsing, or by typing part of the tag name. I've heard lots of people say Pitbull is too complex, but really, my argument has remained "It's only as complex as you want it to be." If you're smart enough to install an addon, you're smart enough to figure out Pitbull. Just spend a few minutes (maybe half an hour tops) poking around the options and you'll be able to do just about anything you want to. Also, the forums at wowace.com are a great resource for figuring out Pitbull and DogTag specific things. The community is helpful and active.

Xperl may be old school, but I still use it, because it works, and works well.
Kaylarra Jun 20th 2008 12:02PM
I'd like to know how people get seperate windows of the Chat window and the Combat log in different sides of the screen.
niko Jun 20th 2008 12:11PM
that's an easy one... go to your combat log tab, then make sure when you right click it, it says it's unlocked... then just drag it away and place it someplace else.
Easy cheesy.

Matt: WELCOME BACK! And congratulations on being (pardon the horribly inappropriate pun which I'm sure you'll still appreciate) back on your feet once more!
My father had non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, waaaaaaay back when I was in the 3rd Grade, and I still remember the extensive treatments he had to undergo so I can imagine what a trying time that must have been. But it's really terrific to see you back in action, and I wish you all of the best, especially in your future columns!
Now, two things about Addons:
(1) As far as I can tell, Addons built in Ace2 or Ace3 do not seem to appear within the new Blizzard-built UI customization browser (the 'Interface Options Window' to which you referred above). The only Addons of mine that I've seen that would appear in this Window are:
Bongos3
OmniCC
Other Addons that I use (or have used - obviously I'm not using Bongos and Bartender at the same time) that do not appear include:
Ace2 / Ace3
Bagnon
Bartender3
Cartographer
Chinchilla
ClearFont2
cyCircled
eePanels2
ElkBuffBars
FuBar
PitBull
Quartz
Skinner
There are several others, as well, but I can't recall all of them off the top of my head.
(2) Will you be rolling all three or four of the regular UI mod columns into 'GUI Center?' (I'm including 'Addon Spotlight,' 'Reader UI of the Week,' etc.)
Looking forward to more!

If Ace was used or not has nothing to do with the addon settings window, an addon shows up if the author has programmed it to show up. There's nothing else to it.

I'm glad to know that you're recovering. Welcome back.

Maybe I can ask here... I am having an issue where, whenever I kill someone in a BG the honor I gain from that kill is being displayed twice. (Happens with bonus honor as well.) I disabled HonorFu but that didnt fix it, and I can disable Honor all together from SCT but thats not my goal. I only want the honor to display one like it should normally.
Anyone else have this bug? Or know how to fix it?
Thanks!
dotorion Jun 20th 2008 1:51PM
Perhaps whatever SCT you are using doesn't overwrite the default Blizz one ?
Or perhaps it's some battleground announcement add-on you have, or a general raid functionality add-on ..
Lori Jun 20th 2008 1:52PM
I agree that it would be nice if there was a option to turn on all quest givers' exclamation points. Occasionally, I do low level quests for rep.
It would also be nice if the gold minimap buttons appeared whenever something was in minimap range. It appears that now they only appear when in range of a zoomed in minimap.
Perrins Jun 20th 2008 2:23PM
Essential Addons:
Bongos3
X-Perl
DeadlyBossMod
Omen
FuBar
everything else in my opinion is just eye candy. i do have ALOT of addons that that i use on a daily basis but without those 5 i would be lost. i find it funny that my whole addon addiction started with me trying to get rid of those ugly griffons in the WOWui.
Jeremy Cox Jun 20th 2008 3:33PM
I'd like to hear more about Omen: as far as I am concerned it is broken. There are two issues: 1) many many updates and needing the same version to communicate (a minor issue) and 2) often threat bars won't display and the entire window collapses on itself, so the top bar overlays the bottom bar. (This happens for us DPS'ers.)
Most people I know have switched to diamond threat meter, which is independent of everyone else's threat mods. Clearly superior.
MartinC Jun 20th 2008 3:59PM
PitBull is really the only way to go. Yes, there are a million things you can configure, but that's the beauty of it. You can configure it to exactly how you want.
Just get over the "I want it to work in 2 minutes without any configuration" hurdle, and you should be fine. I'd say allow yourself a week after installing to tweak it as you try out different instances, roles, etc. After about a week it should be fine tuned and something you can never be without again.

Wow! Sounds like a lot has been happening for you. My Grandmother just recently died from lung cancer caught too late, as far as I am aware, or a mix of that and pneumonia. So I am very, very grateful that you caught the problem early enough to do something about it!
With that said, I'm really excited to see the upcoming articles for this section because I've not been reading WoWinsider long enough to see any of 'em. :D
