Midsummer Fun: A Thief's Reward

To acquire to flames, simply run up to the bonfire and click on it like you would a chest or similar item. Once the casting bar has completed, the fire will be placed in your inventory automatically. Right click on that item to begin a quest, one quest for each fire. Unfortunately, these quests require level 50 to begin.
Alliance Flames
- Exodar - The Exodar Flame is one of the more hidden simply due to the town's layout, but you'll run into the least amount of player resistance here. You'll find the Flame of Exodar in the back of The Crystal Hall, the northmost wing of the city's three wings.
- Darnassus - You will run into a little more Alliance opposition here than in Exodar, since Alliance players generally pass through here to begin the Unusual Activity chain. Luckily, you don't even need to enter Darnassus itself to reach the flame. It is in Rut'Theran Village, a few steps away from the dock to/from Auberdine.
- Ironforge - This is where you'll see the most Alliance interference, most likely. The flame is in the Hall of Explorers, far in the back of the city. If you want to avoid going through the front door and getting slammed by all of the players auctioning and banking at the front of the city, I recommend doing the Stormwind flame first and using the Deeprun Tram since it will take you pretty close to the Hall of Explorers. If Stormwind is highly populated on your server, you may want to do it the other way around.
- Stormwind - This city has become fairly popular since The Burning Crusade, so this might challenge you more than Ironforge depending on your server. The Stormwind flame is just next to the Stockade. If you don't know where the Stockade is, go west from the Trade District and across the first bridge you see. If you look north along the Canals, you'll see the Stockade Meeting Stone. Run towards that, and the flame will be on your left. If you need to make a quick getaway or drop some heat from guard aggro, pop in there for a minute or two and people will forget all about you.
- Silvermoon City - If you play on an RP server, you'll probably run into a fair amount of opposition in this city. If you play on a PvP server, you'll probably skirt by without much issue. The Silvermoon flame is right on the edge of the Court of the Sun, just after you exit Murder Row. Murder Row has a distinct lack of guards, so if you need to drop some aggro, flailing wildly in this section is a good way to make the guards give up and go away. Oh, and if you play a gnome, you can hide from players under the lilypads in the fountain. I'm serious. It works.
- Undercity - This is one of the more populated cities, but that's balanced out by the fact that it has the most exposed flame of them all. Ride straight in the front door, enter the courtyard, and it's on your left. Easy enough.
- Orgrimmar - The flame is pretty close to Thrall's chambers in the Vallery of Wisdom, just a few steps away from the corpse of Mannoroth. There will be a lot of player interference in this area, but you can dodge and/or leash most of the guards if you enter the city from the side entrance and sneak along the back of the city. If you need to make a quick escape, dip down into the Cleft of Shadow and spend a few minutes inside Ragefire Chasm, just as Horde players can do with the Stockade.
- Thunder Bluff - Your mileage may vary as far as the opposition you run into. I got in and out pretty clean, but this city's population varies wildly per server. The flame can be found on The Spirit Rise. The easiest route is to simply take the elevator up, ride straight to the bridge across, and then go straight for the flame. The guards from the main area of the city will leash on the bridge, and you likely won't pull more than one or two guards on your way to the flame.
So, what happens if you turn in all four of the flames? Well, I'm glad you asked! That is where the quest A Thief's Reward comes in. You turn the flames in at any of your own capital cities, and those same people will over this to you when they've gotten all four. 5 gold, 10 silver, and the Crown of the Fire Festival is your prize for all of your hard work. Blizzard really enjoys making hats hard to get, don't they?

I'm considering trying this. I read that you don't need the Silvermoon/Exodar flame to get the hat, though.
Thanks for the hints. :D

No, you need it, just did that today.
Without the Silvermoon/Exodar flame you don't get the last quest, only if you turn in all four.

So, the bonfires themselves start the quest or is it handed out somewhere?
rawrawrawr Jun 22nd 2008 12:31AM
you loot an item from the fires (you open them like chests, takes about 5 seconds) and the item starts a quest.
Telwar Jun 22nd 2008 12:55AM
The bonfires start the quest, same as the town fires that you desecrate or honor.
SBKT Jun 22nd 2008 2:31AM
On my server so many people soloed all the towns now they got entire Batalions guarding the bonfires.
I am so screwed.
Afrigginhobbit Jun 22nd 2008 3:12AM
The Org flame is the the valley of WISDOM not honor, that screwed me up.
PimpyMicPimp Jun 22nd 2008 5:44AM
I did it for the lulz and the nostalgia that came from riding all over the world stealing flames and such. Good times.

Every time I go to loot the fire in Stormwind, I get burned and no quest. Anyone know what's going on with this?
clutterskull Jun 22nd 2008 6:30AM
In case anyone else is an inattentive as I am, when you loot the city fire, you will get a Flame of [City] in your inventory. Using this actually starts the quest.

Our alliance guild had a blast doing this today. It was a pleasant change from doing Kara and whatnot, lots of fun!
Orgrimmar's was by far the most difficult, lots more Horde hanging out there doing their festivities. I'd have to say Thunder Bluff was second, just because there is so much town to go through to get to it and no safe places to go.

I've done all 4 Alliance flames on a rogue and and a priest now. I have a couple tips I didn't see mentioned above.
Darnassus' flame can be had without flagging. For some reason looting the bonfires does not flag you. But this is the only one not located in an auto-flag area. I don't know if it can be done without aggroing guards under 70. You will likely be unflagged when you get off the boat, but if you aren't, just jump off a little before it lands so the players don't spot you. Then, just make your way under the ramp and get at the fire. There is a patrol to watch out for, but she is easy to avoid.
To get any guarded flame, wait as a ghost (or stealthed) in a safe spot between guards (stealthed I stand behind some nearby object). Hopefully another person will run in and everyone will charge after them. That has been sufficient for me to get the flame. It can also be done when the only people there are doing the torch catching quest. That takes all of your attention.

Assuming one cannot stealth, how does a Horde get into Darnassus and the Exodar?
Dilana Jun 23rd 2008 2:18PM
@mondoz
Darnassus you don't have to get into Darnassus. You just have to take the boat from Auberdine in Darkshore to the village on the side of Teldrassil.
As for the Exodar. There is a boat from Auberdine to Azuremyst Isle and taking the back entrance will probably get you there the fastest/safest -- then again.. maybe not. This entrance is in the side of the mountain/space ship/city thing.
mondoz Jun 23rd 2008 2:47PM
It's the whole 'getting on the boat at Auberdine' thing that gives me trouble. Any advice?
Dilana Jun 23rd 2008 2:58PM
Mondoz -- Get as close to Auberdine as you can.. if you've never been there it's an alliance town that is along the coast in the NW part of Darkshore. I get close to Auberdine on the southern side and run inside of the building right next to the water.. run thru it to the middle.. go up the ramp and onto the dock.
Manko Jun 24th 2008 10:37AM
To give a little more info. There are 3 docks in Auberdine. The middle one is to Azuremyst Isle, Bloodmyst Isle, and The Exodar. The right one goes to Teldrassil and Darnassus.
The Exodar's back entrance is dead ahead off the boat, but I'd recommend doing the flames out in the open on the two islands first. Just in case you have to stone out of the city.
As for Darnassus. Once you are off the boat, Darnassus' flame is right there, not in the city at all. But to get to the other flame you have to enter Darnassus and then leave it. Just up the hill from the dock is a structure filled with a pink glow, that is a teleporter into the heart of Darnassus. Just ride in, it'll drop you in the North of the city with no dismount. Just ride south to the main drag and go due east out the gates, as a 70 I've done this with no stealth and gotten out clean.
If you are doing it in one go, I'd do The Exodar set first. It's easier to escape that city than Teldrassil.

Please add this info to the post here (I know it's said elsewhere on WoWInsider, but still): This quest requires level 50!
I did this yesterday on a 54 shaman, took some time but was lots of fun too. Today, I took my little level 22 Horde warlock to IF to begin the quest with him - since he doesnt have any head armor yet I thought it'd look really cool.
I spent the better part of two hours dying & rezing my way from Hammerfel to the flame in IF, and FINALLY got the flame. Only do discover level 50 required!
Needless to say I was more than a little peeved!
Enoras Jun 24th 2008 1:37PM
I tried doing this yesterday on my 44 lock without knowing the quest restrict, and died cause of the nelf Darn patrol who kept walking in. It's good that i've heard its 50 now. I'm 48 as of this morning, so hopefully I'll hit 50 by the end of the day and can start working on the flames. The crown looks silly on my undead spiked hair (doesn't even come down to the head :() so i'd just be doing it for the exp. I think I've hit most all of the small flames, both horde and ally. This is a really fun festival though, I am enjoying myself a lot.
