Yeah, I'm not sure I like the outfit idea either. On old console games, I remember my character looking the same no matter gear I had on. I always thought it was sort of cheap and annoying, in a way.
WOW is cool because one's appearance changes with the gear, like one would expect. I think it was one of the many things that sold me on the game. It makes me look forward to improving my gear. :)
On the other hand, I do know a bit about unique character design. When I see everyone running around in S1/T4 or S2/T5, or even S3/T6 gear in Shattrath, everyone starts looking alike. There's that urge to want to keep *something* unique about your character, so you'll stand out from the crowd.
