How to hold a scientific conference in Azeroth
John Bohannon has been writing for Science magazine as "The Gonzo Scientist," and his most recent writeup, on a real scientific conference held in the World of Warcraft, is a great read. We reported that the event was happening back in May, and now Bohannon's put together a really honest report (from how the conference was funded to the reasons why it was chosen to be Horde-only) on what its like for these scientists researching virtual worlds to put their money where their mouth is, so to speak, and actually hold a conference ingame. They had to deal with everything from conversation direction (they appointed one person to get whispers on any questions for speakers, though, as anyone who's ever been to a mass ingame event will tell you, you can't really keep people from yelling and screaming) to mobs in the Barrens. And it sounds like they did get something done -- besides the panels, which were only slightly frustrated by griefers, they took expeditions throughout the world, and did do a little thinking about how different meeting in RL and meeting in a virtual existence is.
Very good read. The end of the article has a link to a PDF book about the conference, but it's hidden behind Science's membership wall. Still, Bohannon writes clearly and fairly about the game, and it's fun to think of a bunch of scientists actually trying to navigate a virtual world while doing their own research.

Excellent - I love the guild name . I'll forward this on to my mother who is retired now, but in her prime was a chemist.

Definitely worth a read! I would love to see some moderation tools implemented into the game which would allow meetings and conferences to take place without the risk of griefers disrupting the meeting. It's an area that could really open up some opportunities for Blizzard to make WoW a more viable environment for these types of meetings and conferences.

wow, that was an incredible read. i find it infinitely fascinating how the online world is getting more and more credibility as time goes on. not that it didn't have it to begin with, of course, but just that as time goes on more and more people are catching on.

I was getting a Tauren to level 10 so I could attend the conference in style, but I totally missed when it was held. Doh!

I vaguely remember reading about that back in May. I also remember that a lot of people were upset because they had chosen to hold a real-life event on a roleplaying server, which usually isn't the best venue to discuss real live concepts and matters. A PvE server would have been better and probably would have been chosen if one of the participants who provided in-game funds wasn't from that server.
Ah well.

This is a great read. Thank for bringing attention to this!
I am a real life Scientist (I holds PhD in Analytical chemistry) who is also a WOWer. Knowing that I maybe contributing to science when I am not in lab is a great feeling!
Publication in journal such as Science and Nature are considered an extraordinary achievement for most scientist. I would really be interested in meeting some of these people in the guild Science (both in game and IRL).
Incidentally there are a lot of highly educated people who enjoys slaying digital monsters on Azeroth. In my guild we have at least four PhD holders and I have encountered countless more graduate students in my year of travel. Who said Nerds don't know how to have fun?
Bravo.
