What to wear to melt faces in Karazhan, part one
Shadow priests, you are very desired in Karazhan. Between great DPS, mana returns for the group, and a Shackle, all KZ raids would probably benefit from having a face-melter along. This is a guide to gearing yourself up in order to get in those Karazhan raids and earn great epics, from Ritssyn's Lost Pendant to the Nathrezim Mindblade. Holy priests, this is not the post for you (unless you're trying to build a Shadow set as well) – look to the Holy Priest guide to gearing for Karazhan instead.
Due to the unique mechanics of Shadow Priest combat, there is one stat that rises above the rest for you: +damage (either shadow or all schools). More +damage means more DPS, of course, but it also means more mana back from Vampiric Touch; this will be your primary form of mana regeneration, and you should have VT up at all times. Spell hit is also very important. Assuming you have 5/5 Shadow Focus (which you should, unless you're already hit-capped), you need 76 spell hit to reach the cap on level 73 mobs (raid bosses are considered level 73). Additional spell hit is relatively useless, although that once you reach 101 hit, you can take a point out of Shadow Focus and move it elsewhere; it's probably not worth gearing for this specifically though.
Spell crit is much less important than +damage and (pre-cap) spell hit, given that we have only two spells that can crit: Mind Blast, and Shadow Word: Death. We do cast those spells fairly frequently, especially MB, so it's not a worthless stat by any means, but you should definitely favor +damage over spell crit. Some Spirit is also good to have, since you will probably have Meditation. You need enough stamina not to die, but as with the Holy priests, I recommend not gearing for stamina specifically, but rather keeping some high-stam pieces in your bag to swap in for fights like Aran where you need them.
Frozen Shadoweave
If you read my Holy Priest guide, you'll remember me raving about the Primal Mooncloth set. Frozen Shadoweave (technically, the set is called Shadow's Embrace, though I've never seen anyone call it that) is like that for Shadow Priests, only better. Boatloads of +damage, and a bunch of Stam and Int, will keep you very happy for a long time. One of PMC's weaknesses is that it has no Stamina on it; not so here. And the set bonus is like a free, mini Vampiric Embrace – nothing huge, but it's handy.
Overall, the mats will be 26 Shadowcloth, 38 Primal Water, and 8 Netherweb Spider Silk. The Water is the hardest part there. I recently got most of the way through constructing this set myself, before I decided to switch back to Holy. In fact, switching specs is the biggest weakness of the FSW set (as well as PMC): you need the appropriate tailoring spec to wear them, and respeccing your tailoring costs 200g.
But if you plan to stay Shadow for a little while, definitely make your FSW set. It is probably the best investment you can make as a new 70, and will last you a very long time.
Spellstrike
This is the parallel to the Whitemend set. Spellstrike is a two-piece BoE epic tailored set; it's significantly better for Shadow than Whitemend is for Holy, and you should really consider getting it (unless you're an engineer, in which case you can skip the hood in favor of your goggles, but should probably get the pants).
The proc rate on the set bonus is 5%. The set bonus does require that you have tailoring, at 350 or higher; however, the set is still definitely worth wearing even if you're not getting the set bonus, as the individual pieces are hard to beat pre-T5. The total mats for the two pieces are 20 Spellcloth, 10 Primal Might, and 2 Primal Nethers.
There's no Dungeon Set 3 for shadow, although the Warlock set is good for certain slots; I will, however, mention that as appropriate, so let's get right into the slots. As in the Holy guide, I'll mention enchants as I go along (enchant your gear!), and gems will be covered in part 2.
"Of Shadow Wrath"
Due to the awesomeness of +damage for Shadow Priests, there are a few cases where green items "of Shadow Wrath" are actually quite good. Many players will tell you not to equip them, since of Shadow Wrath items have literally no other stats besides +shadow damage (and armor). However, I maintain that they are extremely cost-effective and will serve you well until you find replacements, as long as you only have them in a few slots. Therefore I do have them listed in this guide.
Let's go ahead with the slots. For each slot, items will be listed in order of preference, with the better items on top.
Head
- If you're an engineer, like for pretty much every other class/spec in the game, you can make some awesome goggles. For Shadow, you'll be wanting the Destruction Holo-gogs.
- However, many of us are not engineers. That is why we have Spellstrike Hood.
- If you're too cheap for Spellstrike, try the Elementalist Skullcap of Shadow Wrath, which should be a bargain on the AH.
- Or, if you're one of those of Shadow Wrath haters, Hood of Oblivion (Skyriss, Arcatraz) might be more your speed. Don't take it over a Warlock who needs it, though, it is their DS3.
- Finally, Evoker's Helmet of Second Sight is a pretty hot quest reward, although it does involve some 5-man questing.
Enchant
Glyph of Power, Sha'tar revered (85g at revered). I love glyphs. Nice chunk of spell hit there, too.
Neck
- Shattered Sun Pendant of Acumen. These SSO rep necklaces are great for pretty much everyone. The Aldor proc, as in most cases, is better than the Scryer one, but it's worth grabbing in either case. In fact, this beats out all other pre-raid necklaces even if you're not getting either of the procs. And getting to exalted with the Shattered Sun Offensive is not at all difficult; should take you about a week's worth of dailies.
Shoulders
- Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders](http://www.wowhead.com/?item=21869). Yes.
- If you won't be convinced to go FSW, Felstone Mantle of Shadow Wrath, should you see it on the AH, is good, but rare.
- Spaulders of the Torn-heart: everyone should have these at least, if not either of the above. They're from another Shadowmoon Valley quest chain.
Enchant
Shoulder enchants are quite limited; go with the best one you can get from your faction. That said, the Scryer honored enchant is probably not worth applying, since it's spell crit-only. If you're Scryer, get to exalted ASAP.
Cloak
- Illidari Cloak of Shadow Wrath (BoE drop). Hard to find, but surprisingly good.
- Ambusher's Cloak of Shadow Wrath. I know, I know, enough with the of Shadow Wrath items. But it's not my fault Shadow Priests get so much out of +damage!
- Cloak of the Black Void (BoE tailored; ~150g).
Enchant
You can probably guess this one: Sublety. Threat is one of Shadow's biggest weaknesses, and we need anything that can help. On many fights, 2% less threat = 2% more damage.
Chest
- Frozen Shadoweave Robe. Almost indecently excellent.
- Darkweave Raiment of Shadow Wrath. Another of Shadow Wrath drop from a rare mob; hard to find, pretty good.
- Scarlet Sin'dorei Robes (Kael'thas, heroic Magister's Terrace). Arguably, if you're running H-MrT, you probably are geared enough to run KZ, but it's a good robe, anyway.
- Robe of the Crimson Order (world drop BoE). There sure are a lot of BoEs showing up on this list, which is good if you're trying to gear an alt or an off-spec and don't have much patience.
Enchant
You won't get a huge amount of help from any chest enchant, but Major Spirit is quite cheap and will give you a bit of regen.
Wrist
- Runed Spell-cuffs (35 BoJ). Not totally imba, but quite nice, and better than several KZ drops. However, if you don't have the badge wand or off-hand yet, you might want to save your badges (see later, when I talk about those slots).
- Elementalist Bracelets of Shadow Wrath
- Bracers of Havok (BoE tailoring, ~150g)
- Crystalweave Bracers. I never quite got into the whole Ogri'la thing, so I'm not honestly sure what goes into these, but they are tasty.
- Shattrath Wraps (Shadow Labyrinth quest). Another swell quest reward; these are not hard at all to attain. You should have these at a minimum
Enchant
Spellpower is pretty expensive, but by far the best bracer enchant you can get (the other ones aren't worth bothering with). I would say put it on the Runed Spell-cuffs or the Elementalist Bracelets, but if you don't have those wait for something better.
Well, Shadow fans, that's it for part one. Part two will be up in a few days, covering the remaining slots as well as gemming; until then, may your spell rotations shine, and your nukes never pull aggro.

Nice, low effort gear guide.
Elitest Jerks also has a great one here: http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t16977-shadow_priest_101_how_melt_faces_effectively/
I've used it quite a lot.

As far as wrist Enchants go. For kara level id probably go for the Healing Enchant considering youll be replacing the bracers quite quickly once in kara not as good as spellpower but as you still get +10 (as opposed to +15) Spell damage and its about 300g cheaper in mats well worth it in my mind.

I'm pretty disappointed in this article. It was half-done at best. You completely skipped Battlecasthood and pants, denounced the Scryer +crit enchant but didn't mention the +mp5 one available at honored and totally skipped on some easy quest cloaks that are available. For shoulders you skipped the drops from Black Morass and Arcatraz (off the first boss none the less). Not to make you feel bad but if you want to know the proper way to write this article, take a look at Rossi's Care and feeding of warriors KZ post. That is a complete guide with excellent suggestions.
Eliah Hecht Jun 24th 2008 1:25PM
I skipped Battlecast because Spellstrike is better. Manasphere is similarly sub-par for shadow. MP5 as a shoulder enchant is marginally better than crit, I suppose, but still fairly worthless for a spriest.
Glad you're a fan of Rossi; I like him too.
Surpriseb Jun 24th 2008 1:47PM
Spellstrike is better if your not spell hit capped. Battlecast is nice for the superior stats 2 sockets on the helm and loads of spell damage. You thought to include a green in the list why not something vastly better?
Mana-etched Shoulders are not sub-par by any means. Healthy Stam, Intel, and Spirit. Shadow Word: Death is nice but only counts when you have the hit points to live through one. It at the very least, deserves a mention.
MP5 on shoulders is also not a wasted stat. More MP5 = more DPS which = more mana which = more DPS.
There are a lot of other decent options that were not mentioned.
hristo Jun 24th 2008 1:59PM
Even if you are hit capped, Spellstrike is still better. The set bonus procs often - often enough that I still second-guess myself wearing my hood of hexing despite its clearly superior stats to the Spellstrike hood. Further, the Spellstrike set has more sockets, which means more + damage gems, which means more damage. Finally, going beyond the spell hit "cap" means you can drop talents from Shadow Focus and start putting them into Shadow Power. Sure, most of our DPS comes from spells that can't crit, but once your gear hits the point where it can't really be improved as your current level of progression, adding more crit for MB and SW:D is about the only way to keep improving your DPS.
There is just simply no defending a shadow priest wearing battlecast over spellstrike.
Khalent Jun 24th 2008 2:04PM
Oh, and not to beat a dead horse, but...
My shadow priest has been into T5 content successfully with less than 8000 self-buffed HPs. If you feel as though you need beaucoup HPs to survive a SW:D then you need to invest in a threat meter, because you're not supposed to be tanking. If you have decent +damage and try to get SW:D off before MB when possibly, then a MB and a few ticks with VE up (assuming you're using it, one measly dot from a healer if not) will easily have you capped off again before the cooldown is up... unless you're tanking, of course, which has very little to do with your gear and very much to do with your threat control abilities.
Khalent Jun 24th 2008 1:37PM
The author probably skipped Battlecast because they are inferior in almost every way to Spellstrike, which was mentioned. (I didn't replace the hood until I got the hood of hexing and I still use the pants) You don't need the sta and int on battlecast at pre-Kara and Kara levels, you're not a lock. The Spellstrike also has glorious, precious +spell hit which everyone from the "zomg gladiator gear is epix it must roxxor" school of thought seems to totally dismiss... which is why they also get outdamaged by shadow priests geared like this guide in Raids... and that isn't calling SPriests uber, because we're not SUPPOSED to be ahead of locks and mages in DPS.
Personally, however, I'd say the S2 spellblade (now that it's honor-based) and the Vindicator's cuffs are both better than what the guide lists and are easy to get with a little investment of time. If gold isn't an issue, you can also get a belt of blasting crafted for you at technically any level of progression if you want to pay for it.

All of those other pieces are nice filler but if you're serious about your shadow priest you need to be in full FSW/SS. The other pieces should serve as placeholders for those, they're that good. If, for some reason, you're not a tailor, the Isle badge items (missing from this list for some reason) are good replacements. Up to you whether it's easier to get 100 badges per piece or level tailoring...
Candina@WH Jun 24th 2008 2:14PM
/agree.
FSW + SS > Tier 4 SP Gear. (as a matter of fact, the T4 SP gear is CRAP, IMO).
You won't replace FSW + SS until you have more badges than god (100 badges or more a slot... shudder), or are doing ZA / Tier 5 raiding.
Alkahn Jun 24th 2008 2:43PM
Personally if you're "pre-Kara" I think the 100-badge rewards are prolly not worth it (bang for buck) compared to things that aren't so easily replaced by tailoring.
Save your badges for the Runed Spell Cuffs, Icon of the Silver Crescent, Studious Wraps, Carved Witch Doctor's Stick, and either of the offhands - all of which are much harder to upgrade and also cheaper to buy. THEN if you have 100 badges, you could consider the robes (which still aren't better than FSW - just go tailoring, honestly).
I think this is a very good guide, personally. hit and +dmg is where you should be focusing at this progression point, though once you're all kitted up, spell haste gets pretty nice (Pantaloons of Arcane Anihhilation, hmmmm).
rick gregory Jun 24th 2008 2:57PM
I agree with both of you. My point was that FSW/SS is so much better than the other things that it's hard to justify NOT doing them. Put more simply... if you're shadow, level tailoring, farm/buy the mats and make FSW/SS/Belt of Blasting. Then use badges as one of the comments outlines. Doing that (and using +9 gems and appropriate enchants) will get you to ~1200 shadow dmg.
On the other hand, FSW requires tailoring and, if the person refuses to level tailoring, the Isle badge rewards are as good/better. Not really a pre-Kara option, but certainly one that's out there and more accessible that the T4 items in some cases (the robe) - and T4 is so meh for us...

I've got FSW on my lock, reading this piece is enough to make me consider keeping my JC, and dropping the mining for tailoring on my shadow priest, as well. I do have a little hunter coming up in the ranks with mining...
hmmmm....

Don't obsess over spell hit; hell, I didn't get hitcapped until I'd been through Kara several times and picked up some badge gear. Shadow Focus is seriously one of the best talents around.
If you can't bring yourself to get Exalted with SSO for whatever reason (you might be like me and be one of those people who can't stand dailies), you might consider looking at the Manasurge Pendant (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29368), which costs only 25 Heroic badges. That may seem like a lot, but especially once you start doing Kara (and it's easier than ever to get into a Kara group while a bit undergeared, especially for DPSers like Shadow Priests), you'll be swimming in Badges, as a full run yields 22 of them.
rick gregory Jun 24th 2008 3:01PM
Hit is easy. A spriest will pick it up with the gear that they should get for damage anyway. I have 126 and didn't strain to get it. That lets me go 3/5 Shadow Focus and gave me those points to use elsewhere.
Another option for the neck is the Vindicator's pendant. Oh and the SSO one is bugged for us currently and will not proc on dots or, I think, channeled spells. Will be fixed in 2.4.3 though.
Isambaard Jun 24th 2008 3:39PM
Even if you hate dailies exalted SSO isn't difficult. Don't forget also revered SSO gives a very nice caster weapon to go with the orb of the soul eater which is probably the best badge item to start with for an SPriest.
Full Magisters clears give a lot of rep, there're some nice drops in there, and SPriests are very useful as MC on several mobs is awesome. For example, the pre-nerf Mage Guards since Glaive Throw is usable under MC. VE is also great for Kael phase 2 and Vexallus the whole way through.
If you're Aldor the proc on the SSO neck makes it OP all the way into Tier 6, so a week of hating an hour a day of dailies (which not only gets you exalted, but will help with the rep grind for either aldor/scryer and make you some nice spending money) or a bunch of Magisters runs is worth it.
holygunner Jun 24th 2008 2:10PM
Gearing a shadow priest is easy. Here is a link to a geared out shadow priest, with only 4 items coming from kara. If your SP is an alt imo, get tailored epics. They are easy for you to get your hands on, and with the new daily quests you can get enough gold to buy everything you need in a week or two.
