New account management options: Blizzard Authenticator and Beta Opt-In

We already know about the Blizzard Authenticator that'll be coming out soon enough. It is a little (optional) device that will act as a hardware based key which will be needed to log on to your account. This looks like the spot that you can associate one to your account with.
However the Beta Opt-In link is really interesting. This is just in time for all the activity at the World Wide Invitational 2008, and those of us at WoW Insider are speculating that all those beta keys people are getting at the WWI08 will be used there (there will be a goodie bag handed out to each attendee). However hopefully this will also let others get into the beta as well.
Right now the beta link points to the resurrect-a-friend program, and the authenticator link points to an un-published page - we'll let you know when they change over to a page with more useful information. Nonetheless, definitely something we all want to keep an eye on.

Ugh, that opt-in page is gonna be more laggy than the PTR character copy.
Greeeat.
Still pretty sweet though!

I play from two different laptops, both of which I payed with my own money. However, you say it's optional?

The authenticator is an independent little piece of hardware, you don't need to attach it or connect it to anything else. Also, you associate an authenticator with your account, not with a specific computer. So the number of computers you use to play doesn't matter. Check the official press release, and also this thread from the official forum: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html;jsessionid=2F7E411E821F79FA125DC9019E34B3AB.app05_06?topicId=7475459944&sid=1.

Just do a little research on the Authenticator. In fact, try to google it. First link: www.blizzard.com/security-token
Right on Blizzard's website.

It would totally take away from the value of going to Blizzcon and WWI, but what if they opened the beta up to every active WoW subscriber?
William Jun 27th 2008 2:46PM
Hahaha.. 9-10 million Beta testers... that would defintely be a good test...
OutlandishTrendz Jun 27th 2008 2:49PM
You mean we don't live beta test? Could have fooled me.
Fooliecoolie Jun 27th 2008 4:03PM
What about the Blizzcon 2007 beta key holders? Will we get the option to join the beta too?
Kaphik Jun 27th 2008 5:33PM
Yeah! That beta key I got over a year ago had better be for Wrath, over the one people are gtting this weekend.
PimpyMicPimp Jun 27th 2008 5:04PM
IT IS OBVIOUSLY THE DIABLO 3 BETA
Kaphik Jun 27th 2008 5:39PM
Well, here's what looks lke the deal with the Beta Opt In. It appears that it isn't a BETA Opt In, it seems to be Opt In which is in beta.
Huh?
Clicking on the link brings up a page detailing refer a friend. Here's a copy of the text:
"Invite a friend that has left World of Warcraft to return with a FREE 10-Day Trial of the Burning Crusade. If your friend reactivates their account and pays for a month of gametime, you will receive a month of WoW FREE! You can only invite someone who was once a paid subscriber and last played the game more than 90 days ago."
So, no beta key, but a new feature they seem to be testing.
Ecs Jun 27th 2008 6:30PM
by that you mean the rather getting older feature that's been around since oh, probably sometime last year?
Sagamarth Jun 27th 2008 10:25PM
Well it has been removed already. So someone activated the options a little too early.

WWhen i read this i just though it was something that you could go to to express interest in possible betas, for when they do those random hand outs to spread it around different playstyles. Dunno what it would do really aside from let those that chose to opt out know that they would not recieve any beta invites and easily know scams, but meh just what i thought
