WWI '08 Notes from the PvP panel

1:30 PM CEST: Tom Chilton (Lead Game Designer) and Cory Stockton (Lead Level Designer) take the stage.

- Non-instanced PvP
- Siege vehicle combat: we'll talk about that more later
- Air combat: there are two types of air vehicles
- Destructible buildings: wouldn't be fun to have siege vehicles if there wasn't stuff you could blow up
- Supports both large and small scale combat: Blizz has been trying to predict average participation and make it fun for small and large groups
- Attack / Defend game type: Like the Spirit Towers. One team claims territory, but only holds it for a set amount of time before the other side has a chance to attack again. Each time territory changes hands, the attackers become the defenders.
- Rewards: Northrend "Spirit Shards" that you can use to buy rewards you can't get through other mechanics (read: honor or arena points). But these won't be more powerful than other PvP items -- just alternatives. Don't want people to feel they aren't competitive if their faction isn't winning. Also honor and marks of honor just like you'd get from a normal instanced battleground.

1:43: Graveyards will be like graveyards in other battlegrounds with a basic 30 second respawn. You'll also be able to capture graveyards so your team isn't always respawning across the map.

Eggy Jun 29th 2008 7:45AM
Typo, you said "bringing oyu the latest, "
doyesac Jun 29th 2008 7:57AM
"bringing Oyu the latest, "
Fixed.
But who is Oyu and why does he/she get the latest rather than loyal WoW Insider readers?
Krystalle Voecks Jun 29th 2008 8:48AM
Hey Eggy - Elizabeth has been up at this point for about two days, including being about 12 hours jetlagged off her normal schedule. Cut her some slack.
Camaris Jun 29th 2008 7:54AM
Woah.. World of Unreal Tournament. This will be fun :)
PimpyMicPimp Jun 29th 2008 8:00AM
Sounds awesome...
...but could fail horribly.
God, world PvP would get me back into PvPing. TBC has killed it for me.
Kyle Jun 29th 2008 8:07AM
I here ya. World PvP was great until TBC came out. BGs and Arenas are fun, but PvP in general felt to controlled. Hell, the entire game is faction based, should be more open warfare. Lake Wintergrasp should hopefully revitalize it.

So the skinny is that Seige Engines will work in Azeroth. Does that mean they will be like mounts? I can keep one in my backpack? When Alliance scrubs show up to harass the Crossroads I can pull it out, start it up and run 'em over! Heck! -- could we just make the building in the Xroads destructible?
Let's say Blizz made every building in Azeroth were destructible. How long would they last before everything was rubble? I say 5 days.
Suzaku Jun 29th 2008 7:06PM
No, that's not how it works at all. They aren't mounts, they'll spawn on the maps somehow, and you can drive/ride on them by right clicking them. Where'd you even get that they'll work in Azeroth?
Wintersgrasp and the new BG sound cool. Hope they don't take a backseat to the Arenas. Bah, who am I kidding? Of course they will.

After viewing that feed I have to say; Tom Chilton comes off as an arrogant asshat. And the Kalgon crest on their shirts is also a little troubling, especially since Chilton seems to have a distinguished little motif going on with his.
Kalgonites shall reign; none can stop their unwavering mortal strike crusade.

You missed the very good question on whether the servers would be able to handle massive amounts of players fighting in wintergrasp as at present city raids take down servers. Blizzard reply completley missed the point of the question and said their would be "performance enhancements" so that slower computers wouldnt be badly lagged for example "progressivley lowering the distance the client becomes aware of the more people are in one place".
E Dodge Jun 29th 2008 1:30PM
Wintergrasp will probably see no more action than Halaa does now. I'm not exactly seeing Halaa taking down the servers.
WatcherZero Jun 29th 2008 1:33PM
Will have a lot more action, firstly its rewards are endgame and not 65-67 which is why most dont bother with halaa, secondly ownership of wintergrasp gives soul shards in every single WOTLK instance.
And thats of course not mentioning its own rewards and the coolness of it siege, which will only otherwise appear in a limited form in the new battleground.
Nicholas Jun 29th 2008 12:58PM
"...But these won't be more powerful than other PvP items -- just alternatives."
Wintergrasp PVP is dead before it even goes live. Once again Blizzard sidelines what could have been a revival of world PVP in favor of instanced battlegrounds and arenas.
Vandell Jun 29th 2008 1:05PM
Ugh, so we're still going to have to get our best PVP gear via arena only? Just, **** you Blizzard.
Defensor Jun 29th 2008 1:15PM
Will we be able to see the developer panel videos at any point besides the live feed? I've been looking for them online, and haven't been able to find any, and I slept through most of the ones I care about =\

The lake looks great,I thought it would be just like the other lolpvpareas maybe just bigger but it really seems going in a good direction,if blizz can somehow work with the the faction size imbalances and geared up players(and it seems they can, with the vehicules, etc).
Now,about arena, again im very disspointed that its just more and more LOS fun,its interesting yeah but it would be waay more interesting to have just 1 arena that is not LOS hoaxed, atleast just 1 to have that variety.(not like if I liekd arena that much anyway, just doing it for the gear I really enjoy is PVP BGs)On that matter, blizz is just amazing no news or nothing regarding the rated guildvsguild BGs that so many people ahve suggested.
Whats been shown seems good,I will try to be positive and say that maybe the lakes rewards are as good as the arena ones but built towards that style that altho just a zone seems like a BG,more bursty and killin less survival and turtle ,and that even tho the latest trends towards more and more rating and more expensive things are just making it harder for the average good non-arena pvper to get the good gear, maybe those comments on the WWI are a hint of a change, with good pvp gear of diferent styles from diferent sources and arena being more dynamic and more skill based, and not forced.A real elites sport not an everyones work grind .

I'm loving where this is going. The new battleground doesnt sound like a reiteration of another one *coughEoTScough*
Its also nice to see that instead of creating new vehicles, they are dippin back into the RTS for them. I've always wanted to drive the Dwarven Steam tank and just run some people over (hope thats one way to attack lol)
And though I dont do arenas, the new ones sound great, specially orgrimmar's arena. Sounds alot like its going to be like a Gladiator's fighting ground, and the elevators lifting the teams up/down into the arena has a classic sort of epic feel, specially if there will be NPC cheering and booing at you.
