Faction frustrations eased in Wrath
If you've played a Feral Druid to 70, especially in the early days of The Burning Crusade, you probably remember grinding out Exalted with the Cenarion Expedition for your Earthwarden. Personally, my pet faction was Lower City. As a Shadow Priest, I drooled heavily all over the Gavel of Unearthed Secrets. I had hit level 70 before Karazhan raids were commonplace on my server, so I found myself in Shadow Labyrinth at every opportunity. Say what you will about the irritation of running Steamvault constantly, I think Shadow Labyrinth is just a little more frustrating. Admittedly, if I had waited a few weeks, I probably could've gotten a Nathrezim Mindblade pretty easily when Karazhan runs picked up, but what can you do?To help avoid this irritation, Wrath of the Lich King will be introducing something currently called 'championing.'
The term will likely change before Wrath's launch, but that's what it was called at The Worldwide Invitational's Dungeons and Raids panel. With this mechanic, you'll be able to gain some reputation with some factions outside of that particular faction's dungeon cluster when wearing a certain item, most likely a tabard. For example, you may want Honor Hold rep but don't feel like running Shattered Halls all week long. You can equip this item and go into Steamvault, and gain reputation with both the Cenarion Expedition and Honor Hold. If you run Shattered Halls with this item equipped, you gain a little extra reputation along with what you would have normally gained.
This new mechanic can very easily be seen as 'dumbing down' faction and reputation, but I'm pretty excited. Most of my friends wanted to hit me in the head with a brick after our tenth Shadow Labyrinth run, but they were kind enough to keep doing it for me. This way we can all work toward our own goals, while still helping eachother out. My pocket tank could keep tanking for me to help me acquire my hammer, but she could have also tossed on a Keepers of Time tabard and gained reputation toward her Timewarden's Leggings. I did use Burning Crusade factions as examples here, but don't get confused. This will be implemented in Wrath, and not retroactively for TBC. As far as we know, anyway.

They need to stop coming up with rediculous and confusing stuff like this and just reduce the number of factions. Just make one or two big factions and STOP. That's enough.
-1 kudo for this idea.
schroey Jun 30th 2008 9:42AM
They need stuff for us to grind outside of the instances with less reputation rewards. Stuff like Thrallmar, with the Shattered Hand orcs outside. Except maybe reduce the rep to like 1 per kill going from revered to exalted. Would make a lot more sense.

-1 for being unable to spell ridiculous.
And -1 for trying to distill all the factions down to a mere handful. Some of us enjoy building rep with the smaller and more obscure factions, it adds some more depth to the game.

speak for yourself. lots of factions aren't the problem. tying them to specific instances, however, is. this is a neat solution, plain and simple.

Has anyone considered that the even thought the tabard does require exalted that maybe that's the whole point? Blizz has already said that they want the items that can be passed on to your alts, etc. Maybe the tabards are like this in order to make grinding factions on alts easier, but still have it be a challenge that 1st time around? Just a thought.

Wow....it's good to see their dev team is comprised of 5 year olds.
This game is getting ridiculous.

QQ moar, plz
srsly
I think it's novel. At least it's different.
U l33t's make me sick.

Here is the thing. Games are meant to be challenging. This is why I started playing WoW. Then all of a sudden, more and more people started playing which means WoW picked up the whining, entitled casual player who wants all the BWL Epix and Naxx epix without the effort put into it.
This game is becoming normalized. There is a substantial less amount of fun being output in this game than i remember even when BC came out. it's over time that this game deteriorated into just some homogenized epic-raining casualfest for these so-called 10+ million players.
IRL and I guess in game, i come from a "if you want it so bad, earn it." not this hand-holding way of the path of least resistance.
So forgive me for being around long enough to see this game somewhat deteriorate into one giant suggestion by the common entitled casual player.

I somewhat agree with Ryan. Also, niko, it's quite difficult to take you serious when all we see is childish 'qq srlsly moar' abbreviations.

Ryan,
If I am reading this rep change correctly, it is not saying there will be any less work to get exalted with a certain faction (although that may be in a different change down the line, who knows?), but rather that you will have a wider variety of ways to get that rep.
If so, that is a change I welcome. I mean, having a long rep grind is one thing, but having to do the same instance over and over and over and over...after a while it is not about earning anything, it is not about skill, it is about enduring epic amounts of boredom.
Now, make me do the same amount of work (or even a bit more), but tell me I can run any instance and I am one happy rep grinder. Or, at least, one who is not quite as ready to smash my face into my keyboard after seeing the same Naga boss for the 200th time. :)
Candina@WH Jun 30th 2008 10:35AM
Lets look at consistancy.
Some Rep is painful to grind (HH/Thrall).
Other Rep is easier to grind, but pays off in small chunks (Aldor/Scryer).
Some Rep give good gear. Other rep is pretty meaningless or gives a single worthwhile item (Aldor shoulder enchant, Shat'tar head enchant).
Some rep is required for you profession (Old Mithril order, All rep for enchanting (which SUCKS!).
What you call 'dumbing down', I call giving more choices. My shammy needed Shadow Labs for rep (and Kara key). It took me 4 WEEKS of LFG to finally get a group that wanted to run SL. My guildies were SICK TO DEATH of SL grinds and couldn't be bothered.
I personally hate Shattered Halls. But I am an enchanter and need Thrall rep. So, if there was another way to GET Thrall rep, I am all over that.
What you call 'less fun', I call flexibility in how to achieve my in game goals. In real life, there are usually more than one way to do things. I think that the designers are working away from the 'one path, lead you by the nose' to the more flexible, here is the goal, here are multiple ways to achieve that goal, choose which is most fun to you.
End wall of text

Tanek, spoken like a true entitled elitist.

Grinding is not a challenge. I wouldn't mind replacing all faction grinding with the completion of various solo skilled feats, but apparently that isn't the direction they want to go. Personally I'd prefer anything to remove or mediate the 'do x task over and over again until your eyes bleed' mechanic.
Mitch Jun 30th 2008 1:13PM
"Personally I'd prefer anything to remove or mediate the 'do x task over and over again until your eyes bleed' mechanic." That's kind of what this change is bringing. Just that you could run a different instance with people while still getting rep with the faction you need. Though it would still be a grind it wouldn't be as bad since you can vary it up a little.
And btw, a lot of PvE content isn't about skill. It's mostly about coordination (which you can say is a skill, but not exactly a gaming skill). And it's about RNGs on whether or not you can gear up, because I love killing Prince for the 15th time and not getting my T4 helm. It's super. Obviously I don't deserve it though, huh?
PimpyMicPimp Jun 30th 2008 8:59PM
Care to explain why?
tanek Jun 30th 2008 9:59PM
@ Hank
I'd respond at greater length to your comment if I could only understand what you are trying to say.
Given your eloquence, though, I feel you do deserve *some* reply in kind, so...
Wha? :)
Matthew Jun 30th 2008 9:43AM
It's all about having fun. If someone can admittedly say they have fun grinding rep - well, more power to ya. It aint my cup of tea, though.
rugus Jun 30th 2008 9:48AM
You now need Exalted with a faction, to get its tabard. So... what's the point of running Steamvaults with HH tabard, if you're already Exalted with them?
makishima Jun 30th 2008 10:01AM
Maybe there will be a new tier above Exalted? .....wait.....please god let no one at Blizz read this!
Ravenswing Jun 30th 2008 10:03AM
Well, the obvious answer would be "not the same tabard." Duh!
