Forum post of the day: Freakin' frogs
Ftoomsh of Aman'Thul is hopping mad that Shamans will be getting Hex in Wrath of the Lich King. Green with envy, she feels that Mages are already being rendered obsolete in PvE. Polymorph as a unique ability should not be added to a pool of skill for more classes to draw from. The original poster jumped to the conclusion that giving this ability to Shamans make Mages completely useless.
Baah, I say. Hex is similar to Polymorph, but is definitely not the same spell. You might even say it doesn't go the whole nine yards. Several of the responding post reminded Ftoomsh that the Hex ability in its current form only lasts ten seconds. On top of that it set to a one-minute cool down while Polymorph has no cooldown but diminishing returns. The frogged character will be in control of their movement, but ill not be able to cast with the debuff. I'd like to add that Hex does appear to lack the healing mechanic of polymorph.
From what I understand Mages shouldn't be counted out just yet. During the Mage discussion at WWI, Blizzard promised an increase in damage for Mages, and the addition of a Frostfire Bolt spell to combat resistances.
This kind of reminds me of the phase when everyone seemed to be getting Mortal Strike. First Hunters were given a healing debuff in their Aimed Shots. Rogues have the option of running Wound Poison on their weapons. Blizzard threatened to give Shaman's Flametongue Weapon a similar debuff, but that change was quickly rescinded.
This leads me to ask two questions: Are Mages becoming obsolete? Should classes have abilities all to themselves?

Meh. Gamers love to complain.
they need to L2Share and L2 be excited for other classes. not nerdy complaint factories.

And what about spellsteal? Giving Mages an offensive dispell that buffs the caster with the buff dispelled is just ridiculous. It's purge on steroids. Oh, Mages getting a Shaman spell! And don't even get me started on Arcane shot and Felhunters.
From what I can see, hex will have a 1m cooldown? How is that going to replace polymorph in PVE?
Like has been mentioned before, they are over balancing the classes which is unfortunately resulting in a mish mash of everyone having similar abilities.
Shamans have been crying for a long time for a form of CC. In my opinion they need to fix existing abilities first. Tremor totem is still a piece of crap, dispite many tweaks: I often get feared out of its range in between pulses. Defensive totems like stoneskin and tremor should move with the shaman.
The shaman is still a fun class to play, agreed we are nowhere near the god mode status of years gone by, but it's a challenging and rewardable class.
What I'd really like to see is a MS type ability for the shaman. Then again, give everyone a healing debuff ability, everyone an offensive/defensive dispell ability, everyone a crowd control ability ... and what type of game are we left with?

Halo?

The way you're comparing Spellsteal and other offensive dispels is kind of short sighted.
Do you know how much mana spell steal costs?
Not to mention virtually every class has a dispel resistance aside from mages.

Mages do feel kinda useless already. People want us for tables and sheep. I don't think Hex will make Poly entirely useless though - A mob can be kept sheeped for as long as the mage has mana for it.
Take away the healing effect from Polymorph and I'll be placated on the issue, if they actually give us a DPS boost like they say. :x Shammies deserve a form of CC too.
Kopykat Jul 2nd 2008 4:11AM
As long as they have mana for it?
Diminishing returns was probably a key point made about sheep.
If they are going to give all these other classes a form of crowd control I think it would only be fair to give a mage a secondary form. Or maybe even allow two sheeps.
Can you say 3v1?
Laorien Jul 2nd 2008 1:00PM
Uh, diminishing returns in PVE? I could have sworn this was ABOUT PvE... Since it says so in the first paragraph of the post. Mages already suck in Arena, I'm sorry but it's true.

Mages feel useless? huh?I could be rude and say "Lrn2dps" (guess i just did). I top the damage meters in most the raids/heroics i run. are there issues with the class? for sure, but lets not over-react

Ok, Ftoomsh has the greatest name, gogo Young Ones :D Sadly it's US realms so I can't tell him in person so to speak... although that makes it even cooler :D
grazwa Jul 2nd 2008 4:21AM
Well spotted! I need to level a character called 'Orgo'
Sarah Jul 17th 2008 10:13AM
haha, that would be awesome ;)
I feel like mage is absolutely the right class too, teleporting where they are called ;)

Hex is fine and it's nice shaman are finally getting an emergency form of cc, this is in no way game breaking for mages, for one thing using this in an instance isn't going to keep the mob away from you due to the fact that there is no loss of control on the effected target, it will still follow you around.

Classes are being so balanced that there loosing there individuality. Its not only the pro's that define classes, its what classes are missing that shows them as a class. eg. shams/droods have no CC (now there getting Hex and indoor roots), rogues getting an AoE, and also the droods getting a rez. In the end all the classes are gonna have the same type of abilities with minor varying strengths.
Kopykat Jul 2nd 2008 4:41AM
Druids have no CC?
Obviously not a pvp'er...

How is this really like polymorph
ok its simmilar in the fact that its an animal form
however its not possible to spam this ability , its not really suited to long term use due to the cooldown ,
its a one shot weapon , an Oh .. SH*T button for pvp or when the tank gets stunned and a dps or yourself is about to get mauled by an angry fel orc
If i were a mage i would be more worried about moonkins rooting mele mobs , this can be spammed untill the drood runs out of mana , especially considering that its now going to be availible inside.
blizzard have implemented this to counter act the , lfm MGT , need two mages , that sadly is the prevailing attitude for the 3rd boss .
I really think there is other utility that a mage brings to a raid encounter than just polymorph for trash , decursing ( we wouldnt dream of taking less thatn 3 mages to kalecgos), Dps , Intellect buff,
theres a lot to the table , for a mage , why feel threatened just because another class is getting an animorph
Adorenko Jul 2nd 2008 3:49AM
Thats crazy to say that a shaman would take the place of a mage with copying just one of their spells. In my opinion the shamman is one of the weakest classes you can roll. So an extra boost wouldn't hurt for the class.
I created a shaman back in December and made it to lvl 31. I stopped playing him in January or Febuary and haven't touched him since for several reasons. One in which I mentioned above. Another reason was that it didn't fit my playing style.
If you have never played a Shaman, do one thing to confirm what I'm saying look at the skill trees and you will see there is nothing there that makes you want to roll a shaman anytime soon.
Eric Jul 2nd 2008 10:35AM
Shaman don't really begin to shine until 40 as enhancement or 55-58 as ele/resto. Levels 30-40 are kind of rough for shaman, but life is sweet after that. You didn't play the class long enough to understand it, sorry.
Sirg Jul 2nd 2008 4:09AM
I have always hoped for a frog polymorph for my mage. I think that's the funniest polymorph ever. However, I guess that shamans are happy now.
Mages should get more polymorph choices, i.e. seal for Northrend, but other critters as well (squirrel, praerie dog, rabbit)
Radiophonic Jul 2nd 2008 4:20AM
Each class should have a CC ability IMO. Who has it?
Rogue: Sap/blind
Mage: Sheep
Pally: Hammer of Justice/Repentance
Warlock: Seduce (as lame as it is, it sometimes works)
Priest: Shackle Undead
Hunter: Traps (duh)
Druid: Cyclone
Shaman: Hmm...
What's wrong with providing a CC ability to a class that's missing one? Nothing. QQ some more, Mage you're OP enough as it is. :P
Kopykat Jul 2nd 2008 4:27AM
KK, so many things wrong with that.
* Hammer of Justice is a stun, not crowd control, you don't call cheap shot crowd control do you...
* The only thing you mention for warlock is seduce, you're forgetting fear. Which arguably is THE STRONGEST form of crowd control in that you can take damage and it may not even break.
* Shackle Undead would hardly be considered crowd control based on its limited use. You didn't mention pallies 'Turn Evil' did you... To mention phsycic scream would've been more correct.
* Hunters have more CC depending on spec. Eg. Wyvern sting, scatter shot.
if you're going to try and weigh up classes, do your research first!
