Barrens Chat: Gotta catch 'em all

When I started playing World of Warcraft, I decided to start off by making a Tauren Hunter. Mostly because every single game I've ever played, I am usually a healer-type character. I decided that I did not want to be the healer this time around, but I was far from ready for the tank job, so I went halfway into what I figured would be a decent solo and damage support class. I was so unprepared for what playing a Hunter would be.
One of my major obsessions, however, was to find a pet that was an uncommon sight. I did not realize at the time that Echeyakee was a Horde side quest, and was really excited at having gotten a "rare pet" when a friend offered to help me tame him.

Eventually I figured out how silly I was being. Eventually meaning later that day when I walked into Orgrimmar. I got over the idea of having a rare pet after that, for the most part.
This comic is made to reflect both how silly I felt, and poke fun at a common question I get from newer players asking me to help them find the rare white lion in Barrens. Random Tauren Hunter because that character I had forever ago no longer exists. I'm sure some of you will know someone who has done this and can attach a name to her if you wish.

While Echeyakee is a fairly common low level pet on the Horde side, its still decently rare on the Alliance side. In order to tame him, you either have to know a Horde side player that can start the quest for you, or hide and wait to ninja the lion away from an unsuspecting Hordie during their quest (and your Tame Pet fails if you lose aggro, so its a bit more challenging).

Do I still get to be proud that my Night Elf has Echeyakee?

Slightly more rare pet: Humar the Pridelord.

I'm sorry, but I need to speak up about Barrens Chat.
It's bad. Like, real bad. The art is childish and often ugly, and the text is lame, and never funny. You ask that criticism of this comic be done in a constructive manner; well, this piece of criticism is for WoW Insider: you're making a bad call by including this comic in your lineup.
There are dozens of comics on WoW out there that are better. You should partner with one of them instead of hosting this lame attempt at a comic.
As for the comic creator: you need to seek harsher criticism in your immediate environment. Your art shows signs of laziness; sometimes you get something right, but most of the times, you seem to give up way before it's half-decent. If you want to do this seriously in any way, you need to take a hard look at what you do, and improve. Your writing style is also poor; try and find someone who can write for you, or study comic writing.

I totally agree, and I've posted multiple times about how bad this comic is. /silly was actually funny, whereas the punch lines here are just poor. Comedic ability isn't something everyone has, and sadly the comic writer doesn't have it.
Watch the latest Zero Punctuation. It'll hopefully deter you from littering the internet with another bad webcomic.

I miss /silly now.

I'm not sure I would call that constructive criticism. Learn to be more objective and avoid the use of words such as "lame" in this context. While I agree with you that this comic may not have some of the qualities as other WoW comics, at the end of the day, it's just a comic and no one was hurt in the making of it. To put things in perspective, go look at the early Penny Arcade comics and compare those to what they are now.

The early Penny Arcade comics had an emerging style despite being quite crude in their depiction; and the humor and tone was innovative, and quite consistent with where they are years later. Their success is no surprise.

No, the comic is bad. Its not funny. At all. Ever. And new comics can't pull that garbage "But they just started!". I've seen starting comics, and one I've been following very loosely to see how it turns out has better jokes than this, I am sorry.
For criticism, make jokes not about yourself or what you have experienced. That is a joke, that though may have been funny to you because you experienced it, no one else will care about. As well, artwork does NOT need to be good, as the Order of the Stick comic clearly shows.
As well, in your last comic about "rouges being overpowered" you had a panel in there where NOTHING CHANGED AT ALL! Was that supposed to be a funny silence? Because it wasn't. There was no need for it, it was a waste of space, like Ctrl-alt-deletes waste of space with panels and words.

I do agree with this comment.
No harm intended for the creator, as a matter of fact, respect for having the energy to do it and giving it a real go. It's alot more than other people are capable of.
But yeah.. it's just not something I'd go out of my way to see ever again.

I agree with this comment also. I don't know why I even look at this comic anymore, I have pretty much come to the realization that every new comic will be equally as bad as the last.
Edboy Jul 3rd 2008 9:30PM
In before kiss ass commenter whining about criticisms or angry author.
I also have called this comic bad, do you think this will finally stop the pain or will it go on bi-weekly?
Faar Jul 3rd 2008 11:49PM
Hard to see anything constructive in the "criticism" "offered" previously - there's no such thing as universal truths when it comes to humor, and what is "lame" to one person is funny to another.
So you don't like the comics. So what. That's no reason to go on a rant, spewing nonsense, as if you're the supreme authority on Funny... Get over yourself, will ya.
I enjoy the comics, most of the time. And should one be meh one week I certainly won't go asking for my money back - coz this entire site is FREE. And if you don't like what you're offered, go somewhere else, and stop wasting people's time with useless complaining.
So... Make your own comic, offer it up to public scrutiny and "constructive criticism", or get off my internets! ;)

I can ask for my time back, and time is priceless.
Edboy Jul 3rd 2008 9:32PM
ah. Missed uncaringbear's comment. we need the angry author and the prophecy will be fulfilled.
