Insider Trader: A discussion of our trade channel

This week, Insider Trader will be starting a discussion about trade channel in World of Warcraft, including its usefulness to its likability, abuse, and role in the game.
At first glance, trade channel is supposed to be a channel linking all major cities, providing a forum for craftsmen and buyers to meet up and exchange goods and services.
Within this context, players make a living, purchase gear and consumables, research goods and services, make friends and business associates, and learn the ins and outs of server economy.
Unfortunately, when asked their opinions of trade channel, many players describe it as annoying, useless, or offensive, and many keep it turned off permanently. Still others seem to hover in trade chat, spending a great deal of time in it either chatting, selling or sometimes, buying.
There are many reasons that players have negative feelings and impressions associated with trade chat:
- Spoilers: Whenever a popular movie or book is released, such as a Harry Potter, many people find that they cannot log into WoW until they have seen or read it, because other players make it their mission to blurt out crucial plot information and reveal endings. Even new episodes of television shows aren't sacred. Although this happens in any channel, trade is often targeted. In fact, the gossiping and 'spoiling' is so infused into trade chat, that when the beloved Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, died in September of 2006, many people heard it first from trade channel.
- Language: Many people find that having to read the language used and statements made by other players in trade channel, which are often disrespectful, offensive, or abrasive, to be a deterrent to entering the channel. Offensive behavior includes racial slurs, sexism or negative sexual orientation remarks, threats, religion and culture bashing, and more, while abrasive includes excessive swearing, attitude, and sarcasm. Other people simply cannot deal with the lapses in grammar and spelling, lol-speak and unique terminology and 1337 speak, arguments, bragging contests, silly banter, or what many would consider to be a (too) high population of children.
- Another reason that people might not bother with trade channel is negative experiences while using it in the past. Players might have been ripped off, stiffed too many times for tips, had to deal with rude and demanding peers, run a deficit, or been unable to successfully sell their goods and services. In each individual case, it may be less the effectiveness of the channel and more bad luck, marketing or soliciting style, language and typing skills, or personality that is affecting the player's profits. Still, when the channel becomes laden with irrelevant conversation and heated discussion, it becomes almost impossible to trade around that. In addition, many people will exit major cities once a spat is underway.
- Insults and spam: Between the gold sellers, the people who will openly question or mock your advertised prices, and the people who will insult you based on your prices or your merchandise, many people can feel simply hassled. In fact, now that we can use symbols, and that spells and items and quests can be linked in a whole new way, people are growing more creative in their methods.

Still, it seems unfair that people who try to be polite and mature, and expect the same in return, are often the ones feeling driven from the trading atmosphere. Seemingly, this would increase the number of rude, immature, ignorant sellers and consumers dominating the channel.
Of course, trade channel is not solely full of people best to be avoided. Many players have a laissez-faire attitude about the language and behavior of others, and can, barring specific circumstances, tolerate the annoyances, the immaturity, and the arguments. In addition, almost anyone will hit trade channel if they have a specific item worth a fair amount of money, in order to get the best price.
In fact, while there are people who utilize trade chat in their normal course of daily business, many others will only seek it for rare items and services that their friends and guildmates cannot provide. Under what circumstances do you use trade channel for trading? Are you a regular user, or a casual one? What are the conditions under which you will avoid using it, and attempt to sell or buy using other means?
If you do a little digging, you will find that players have developed many alternative ways to make a profit and acquire necessary items, aside from having to use trade channel or even the auction house.
Guild chat, guild websites, and guild affiliations all provide a more personal trading atmosphere, along with controls. Any player who steps out of line can be reported to guild officials and action can be taken. Everyone knows the same people and are, by guild affiliation, friends and neighbors, which seems to encourage people to start off on the right foot and make an effort they wouldn't otherwise make with a stranger.
Forums all over the web are also being used to buy and sell items. In fact, people have developed web-based means of trading in-game, and although Blizzard has not always been amiable to the systems developed, players have found them refreshing and were excited about using them.
This is evidence to suggest that people are craving an improved trade channel, if not another means of doing commerce entirely. Web-based systems move away from the practice of dealing directly with other players, while dreams of some sort of in-game personal stall or 'store' aim to improve relations.
As a tradesperson, what sorts of features do you feel the current trading system is lacking? Do you find yourself wishing you had the capability to do things that you can't currently do? Are there any trading add-ons that you could not live without, or that have inspired you regarding changes that Blizzard should make?
Do you enjoy buying and selling player-made products, tipping honest, nice craftsmen, dealing with players on a personal level, and working to cultivate new friendships, business relationships, and a reputation? Would you rather avoid having to deal with the public? Do you value tradesmen in-game similarly to how one might value a skilled cabinet-maker, or do you not feel that virtual tradesmen in WoW are special?
Lastly, what do you love and hate about trade chat? What are your opinions on others' reasons for loving or hating it?

I learned about Steve Irwin's death from General in Molten Core, and more recently George Carlin's death from Trade chat. Haven't had any problems with 'spoilers' on my server, though I've joked to my husband that the chat channels are almost as effective as CNN.com for getting breaking news.

Trade channel is about what you would expect. What they need though, is a system where you can put mats for professions into a "will not be traded" window (like you can for enchants). I have had dishonest players hold my mats ransom in the past, and I hate having to decide whether I can trust someone in a near vacuum of information.

I'd never seen the post on the announce of "Gay" being used as an insult/pejorative, so I'd like to thank you guys now for posting it, and linking to it again.
The only time my account ever sees trade chat is when I'm on my bank alt, and I leave it again immediately after advertising whatever I have to sell or have posted on the AH.
And I do the same on general, especially with the alt I'm leveling on a pvp server. I don't want to hear about the "fgt rogue" who keeps killing everyone, even if it's help me avoid trouble spots. WoW is best enjoyed when pretending most of the other players don't exist.

I don't often sell in trade, occasionally I'll offer my services as an enchanter, always free with mats (and I don't demand a tip, or fee, I feel I'll make more money by not asking for any, and so far that seems true, yeah you get the occasional guy who took that scene from reservoir dogs a little too literally, but what can you do?).
I do often look to buy in trade, though mostly enchants I don't have, and I've found saying I have mats and tip doesnt usually get a good response, however, if I advertise I have mats and am "Tipping Well" I get a million tells pretty quick, or I just upfront tell them my tip (Pre-BC stuff I tip 10% of the cost of mats [even if I'm providing the mats], or 5ish gold which ever is higher, post BC stuff I tip a straight up 10g for uncommon enchants [resil to chest, boar's speed, +40 spelldam] or 20g for the truly rare or if I want it done right now). I make more than enough money playing the AH (on an alt so as not to ruin /my/ reputation) that I have no problem paying a crafter the equivalent of the average daily to come and craft/chant something for me, the way I see it, I'm the quest giver and they have to give me a service or good and they'll get some money, they often have to travel to me, so it is very much like a quest for them as it will take some time. Also, getting a reputation as a good tipper makes my life that much easier getting stuff from the tradespeople.
I can and almost always do ignore the regular inanery (is that a word, to be of or like something inane [not insane, inane]) of the trade chat channel, it is sometimes quite [Enchanting] what people can come up with within it's confines, I do wish there were a global chat channel like trade, but at least you can talk in trade while in the other faction's city (quite invaluable when trying to locate a bonfire for instance), that said, it would be kinda cool if we could set up our own shops (perhaps run by NPCs so we wouldn't have to waste the day in a city), or like an "ebay store", maybe if we ever get player housing, we can have player stores built in.

I always do my item for mats + fees in an instant trade. That works pretty well for an alchemist. I farm a bit to prime the pump, make the transmute, then when someone has mats, I give them the item, they give me the mats and cash (I always state a firm price for my cooldowns). That probably would not work well for armor and weapons crafting as the farming could get prohibitive, but it eliminates the customer feeling that they could be scammed. I can even offer someone all of the items they need instead of just one if I build up a supply - they love that - to get 6 primal mights in one trade.

I've been saying it since they implemented the global LFG channel (and then took it away), and I'll say it again: Global chat channel. TYVM.
Camaris Jul 4th 2008 4:42PM
Playing devil's advocate a bit here:
With the removal of 'that other' global channel, LFG, Trade is currently the only somewhat global chat channel available. I mean, I don't like general stupidity and [Dirge] links either, but it's not always that bad. It might be because I'm on a medium to small sized realm, but (especially late at night), our Trade channel does occasionally break out into a general chat channel, and not entirely unpleasant.
As a solution, I would suggest making General a city-wide channel as well. Creating an interface for Trade would be cool, but if they're going that way, it would probably be easier and more logical to have such functionality as part of the auction house. Which basically boils down to: somehow make auctions/announcements for profession related activities: transmutes, rare recipes, enchantments.

This must be an Alliance problem, sensitive as they are. Mature ADULTS can ignore or turn of trade if they don't like what's being put up.
I use trade to find people for groups, sell things I wouldn't normally put in AH, and judge the idiots that insist on spamming inane bullcrap.
"Oh, I know you, you're that idiot who always spams Trade. I'll not group with you cause you're clearly a twit and I don't want this SV to take 2 hours."
These blog posts about the "mean" people and what they do in WoW always come off as whiny and childish. People are idiots, get over it. Don't ask me to police my own trade channel or complain out of game about it. As I explained to my GF last night when, while mucking about in trade at 4am I posted her myspace in trade to have some fun and she got some negative comments (well what did you expect really?), that they were random people, and their opinions and thoughts shouldn't matter.
"Just ignore the haters." Wise advice that should be passed on to more children.
slimj091 Jul 4th 2008 6:08PM
it's not so much being sensitive. it's that legit trade channel chat on most realms gets drowned out by the "harry potter and the (insert linked item here)" or "i just got done (insert class ability here)ing your mom!"... or the tons of other 4chan kiddie culture crap quicker than you can say holy kids that should be doing their homework batman!
it's funny the first couple of minutes, but the endless crapstorm of kids that think they are cool in the channel gets annoying very quick.
gilren Jul 4th 2008 6:32PM
"This must be an Alliance problem...", well no it isn't. I play Horde and I keep Trade off on my character except my bank alt. Today I logged in to a 5 minute discussion of someone's posterior and nether regions, followed by a bit of gay bashing before people stepped in to complain they were reporting it. So no, it's not Alliance being sensitive. Personally, I find Trade to be mostly inane and half the time completely useless. For every one person selling a service or item, it's almost immediately followed by four people LFG, two people advertising guilds, two people trying to get groups for dailies, someone looking for a partner for his 2v2, and someone telling a joke (which is usually rather bad).
And for people who want to clean the channel up to use it for what it was intended, what should they do? Report 30 people every ten minutes?
Kadamon Jul 4th 2008 11:39PM
I personally submit you, the original, where this kind of entire conversational opinion post comes from.
Barrens Chat, Horde.
JR Jul 5th 2008 6:35AM
"This must be an Alliance problem, sensitive as they are. Mature ADULTS can ignore or turn of trade if they don't like what's being put up."
Advertising your girlfriend to random strangers in a videogame is very mature indeed. I hope to be just like you when I grow up.
Savant Jul 4th 2008 6:12PM
Frankly I think they should just bit the bullet and open an global chat channel. Let those who want to jabber do their thing in a channel, and those who don't want to can /leave.
I do think LFG should come back as a channel without need to of the LFG tool. However, LFG and the Trade channel should have a simple restriction on them. Messages can only be sent to the channel once every X seconds. (or Z number of messages every 5 minutes.) If you make X = 60 or 90 seconds, then it's one post every 60 or 90 seconds. This should allow a person who wants to advertise a trade/LFG request, but won't allow spamming of advertising, and also won't be condusive to off-topic chat. (Hard to carry on a conversation when you can only speak once every minute and a half.)
The problem with the trade channel is that since there is no alternative, people treat it as a defacto general chat channel. Until that changes, don't expect the trade channels of the worlds to get any better.
Aigarius Jul 4th 2008 7:07PM
There is the 1. General channel that is also linked between all mayor cities. People don't use that because a lot of people have it disabled due to excessive chatting.
Kadamon Jul 4th 2008 11:42PM
@ Aigarius
I don't know what server you're on, but General has never been linked between cities wherever I've played.
Though, the second part of your statement is true. General is generally dead in cities.
Aigarius Jul 4th 2008 7:06PM
You are just too intolerant.
If you can not tolerate all the rude, useless and off-topic people then you are intolerant by definition. I simply ignore all that banter and it does not bother me one bit. So should you - instead of trying to limit what other people say just limit what you hear and take seriously. That is a much more constructive attitude and it is also easier on your nerves and on the rest of the society.
energyvortex Jul 4th 2008 8:27PM
"Faar said...
Blizzard needs to invent:
A: A Global Chat channel, where people can BS all they want, and that others can turn off so they don't have to listen to it."
We had this at one point but they disabled it.
We need this again, and they need to put one or two channel mods into trade for a couple months to beat down the idiots that clog the channel and redirect them to the global channel.
They could even get fancy like SOE did with Planeyside chat. It's based on region until you reach max level, then it's global.
troy Jul 5th 2008 2:37AM
What's so hard about "right-click player name->ignore"?
Do that with the worst offenders and the trade channel becomes tolerable again. I usually also send a quick educational "*plonk*" message to a person I'm about to ban, so they realize that people are reacting to their torrents of stupidity.
At least on my server (EU-Gilneas, Alliance), the pool of idiots seems to be limited enough so that I haven't run into the limit of the ignore list yet. But even if there is an abundance of immature idiots on your server you can always extend your ignore list through addons such as Prat.
Aichon Jul 5th 2008 6:40AM
Trade channel on my server is virtually useless because of all the banter that goes on. In order to reclaim it, I started using GnoMoreSpam. While it's designed to handle gold spammers, I've found that it can be tailored to clean up the Trade channel rather well.
I started out by blacklisting every single letter of the alphabet, as well as several symbols, which effectively filtered every single message in Trade. After that, I selectively whitelisted a few words I was interested in. Things like "craft", "ench", "jc", "tailor", and "lw". I also tossed in stuff like "wt" since it handles messages that don't have the other words but do have "WTT", "WTS", "WTB" and "WTC". Aside from a few false positives where I get messages like "wtf is that?111" (because of the "wt") or "that's hawt" (for the same reason), I basically have a completely useful Trade channel.
