This really isnt that new. We were doing it back all they way to BWL selling slots in BWL - Naxx. Its not really an issue imo. There arnt a whole lot of people who have the money to get fully epic out.
Most guilds sell drops. 3000 for High warlord-Mother, then 4000-5000g for Illidan. I dont see the big deal about wanting to pay for the cost of running a guild.
The money the guild makes goes for their continued efforts in higher end content. Consumables, repairs, etc... It is a great source of revenue for guilds.
