Do you need to prepare to switch mains?

Camp one we'll call the laissez faire approach. These people, although they intend to switch mains, aren't really doing much about it. They expect that the gear reset from Wrath will take care of any gearing inadequacies and that we're all going to be running around in clown clothes anyway for a while.
Another group seems to believe that, the further into endgame you get before the expansion hits, the less green quest gear you'll need. Naxxramas level gear was good enough to roll straight into Karazhan with, having comparable stats and DPS to the level 70 instance blues others ground for. So if you're killing Illidan, Archimonde and Kil'Jaeden regularly than you'll probably be able to vendor or disenchant a lot of the quest items and worry less about the gear reset, more about getting ready for the new endgame. This is, of course, an argument for trying to switch mains before the expansion so that you'll be geared enough to avoid any gear reset.
I'm not in either of these groups, but I think they both have valid points.
I'm not switching mains before the expansion because my human warrior is one of our best geared tanks, and I'm not costing us progression raiding over my dissatisfaction with my racials (okay, okay, that part is a joke, human racials are dynamite) and my race's appearance. Yes, three years down the road I'm pretty sick of looking at his ponytail and mustache, but the other 24 or so people who show up on raid nights deserve the best geared tank I can provide for them.
However, I am taking steps to make the gear reset as painless as possible for me. I'm PvPing on my draenei (both battlegrounds and arenas) to try and collect a solid set of gear for heading into Northrend. I always bring my draenei instead of my human to Karazhan because by now Kara is primarily an alt/badges run and so I don't really need to be all that well geared to run it, we have plenty of alt tanks who'd like to pick up some badges. It's also fun for me to play around with arms/fury and fury/prot specs on him, using Kara and heroics as my testing grounds for when it's not feasible for me to switch from heavy protection specs for our progression content.
I know I'll still reset gear in Northrend. I still remember when my Sulfuras was replaced by a green sword from Nagrand around level 66. Honestly, I probably could have held onto Sulf for another couple of levels. The point is, while I believe that the argument that better gear will last longer into Northrend is factually correct (you didn't replace Tier 3 with quest greens, or even instance blues, you replaced it in Kara) for someone about to switch mains the idea that you don't really have to worry about switching is probably valid enough. I just want to try and stack the deck as much in my favor as I can and have fun doing it. It's really a blast to play fury in instances after tanking in raids, it's a total stress release.
I'll probably end up leveling my human to 80 so he can be my fury alt when my draenei is tanking the new endgame, in fact. But we all knew I was nuts anyway. Are you thinking about switching mains? How are you planning on going about it, just logging on the day of the expansion and hopping a boat or are you running stuff in preparation?

I think the gear reset (to a degree) is a fantastic opportunity to switch mains. Before TBC I had a Warrior, for the TBC I had a Druid and in WOTLK I will play my Hunter (or DK).
Not only does the expansion provide new content but opens up the opportunity for players to experience new classes.

My current main is a mage. I have a 70 of every class except druid, shaman and priest.
my WotLK main will be either the Prot Pally or the BM Hunter, unless blizz finds a way to make mages less craptastic. I would go with the lock, but I have too much fun pvping with her.
My strategy for switching mains is pretty straightforward, actually, in that theres no way I can get a second toon to 6/8 T6 before xpac comes out, so if I switch from the mage, I'll be relying on clownsuit greens again.

Jesse, don't forget you'll have easy access to two specs when WotLK hits. I plan to give my new Lock a PvE and a PvP spec, and have my druid as healy/tanky.
My mage (current main), sadly, will be going in the bin due to being on the wrong server.

I'm switching mains, but in a more extreme version: I've rerolled PvP. I've leveled up a nice warrior and am working on getting a Shaman to 70 so I can have a melee DPS (and a REAL melee DPS with the new WotLK talents/abilities!) or healer in reserve.
I'm doing this mainly because of the imminent expansion. For one, just thinking about leveling an alt to 80 is exhausting. But knowing that gear is getting reset was the main impetus. I had been thinking about rerolling PvP for awhile, but I didn't want to walk away form the gear I had worked so hard for, AND start off so behind in gear on the new server. The new expansion weakens both those arguments, so I've finally started working on the switch.

Honestly, leveling an alt to 80 is prolly as bad as leveling one to 60 pre-20-60 nerf.
I know that I have been leveling my troll shaman, I am level 42 now and I'm just under 3 days played. Using a leveling guide (jame's horde leveling guide! Best out there and its free!), and making sure I always have rested XP. I plan to be 60 in under 6 days played, on a faction i've never played before (horde). My first 60 was 18 days (gnome mage) and my second was 14 (human priest). So i figured about 8-10 days played 60-80, and you're at 16 days played, about the average.
So its really not all that bad.

I would never ever level another warrior, let alone switch to a male draenei. Sure Heroic Presence is a nice racial passive and gift of the naaru is a little helpful. I guess I just like my human too much to switch. If anything I'd switch to a female undead or maybe a tauren.
You have much more patience than me if you are able to level up another character of the same class =p

I also have a level 70 NE warrior on that server and a level 70 tauren warrior on Malfurion in addition to the two level 70 warriors I mentioned in this post. I had a level 70 orc warrior but I deleted him.

I'm definitely using the expansion to push a new main (or at least a new spec for him). I love my shaman, but I'm really getting tired of healing in every raid I go to.

I am still unsure if I will switch mains. While I like my warlock main, I have more fun tanking. But tanking is more of a sosial game, and with more time spent at work nowadays, I think a solo character might give more bang for my buck.
All in all, I don't know what I'm going to do. But I'm not much into "prepping" for Northrend. My lock is T6-geared, and my tank is T5 pluss a lot of the top-end badge stuff, so they are both good to go.

I am not sure what I will do... I love my T5 (tank) orc warrior, but recently I fell in love with my T4 (resto) orc shammy. Now I am trying to decide who is going to be my main. The good thing about my shammy is if I ever get sick of healing I can respec and melt faces in raids and most likely find a group very easily. With my warrior on the other hand not so much. I also am looking at it from a pvp aspect warrior>shammy.

i'll have three 70s waiting to be leveled to 80 when the times comes: warrior, shaman, and hunter.
OP main-tank, OP healer, and problematic-but-very-easy-to-level ranged DPS. hopefully they're still good classes when Wrath drops....
i'm considering adding another class or two to that list, as well.
who my main is right now is questionable... the warrior is best-geared... i enjoy the resto shaman most... and the hunter is the char i get gear fastest on. /shrug. not really switching mains so much as picking one.
Jake Jul 6th 2008 7:11PM
After spending two years as a healer, I'm gladly leveling a gnome lock in order to switch over to him when the expansion comes out. I feel like I've paid my dues long enough. Time for attrition warfare.
Schadow Jul 6th 2008 7:07PM
I love my rogue, but running a guild and filling the role that needed to be filled caused me to level and gear a Paladin tank. These days, I am not sure which is the alt and which the main.
I will probably level my rogue doing quest content, and level my Paladin through instances. If things remain anything like they are now, it's a heck of a lot easier to find a group for the Paladin than the Rogue.
As he is my guild's best-geared tankadin, I imagine he will remain in the role of off-tank AoE specialist and therefore need to be geared through instances.

rerolled with BC, can't bring myself to level through all the old shit again with any class.
vittas Jul 6th 2008 7:23PM
i am switching mains! i have done it before! my full tier 2 rogue (troll) got replaced in TBC by a now full tier 6 orc rogue. For Northrend i allready have a lvl 70 BE rogue which i am planning to gear up in arena gear, as good as possible! expansion rerolling ftw!
Khalis Jul 6th 2008 7:27PM
I'm using the opportunity to change my main from a Human mage to an Undead mage. I'm gearing my human up through tier 6, and then my Undead as much as I can until the expansion. That way, my new Undead main will gear up as I level him to 80, and my Human will be geared up already, so I can level him quickly, and have him ready without too much work.
Clevins Jul 6th 2008 7:44PM
Ok, I'm sorry... but why roll and level multiples of the same class? I do NOT get that one...
I have a shadow priest in T5 equivalent craftables and a rogue in T4/badge gear. I have no idea which is my main. I'll level them both and probably focus on the priest at 80, but a lot of that will depend on which toon can raid more easily. The priest was easy to gear at 70 since I could make/get made so many T5 level pieces. If that's true at 80 the priest will end up being my defacto main.
Matthew Rossi Jul 7th 2008 1:29AM
I also have two 70 shamans.
In the end, it comes down to this: I like warriors and shamans. I can give you other reasons... respec costs, wanting to play a different race, wanting a toon to run lower level content with friends, different servers... but in the end, I like warriors and shamans.
Clevins Jul 7th 2008 2:26AM
Rossi? You're wierd© :)

It is whole heartedly feasible to use this time to switch mains. I have played a Druid as my main for 4 years now and I must say, I have grown bored. Back when TBC came out, I created a BE Pally and let him sit on the char select screen for the longest time. I have just now started to decide that I was going to play just my Pally, Rogue and maybe a Deathknight when WOTLK comes out.
So I've started leveling my Pally, and in 2 weeks of playing here and there, he is already level 52. I can't wait for Wrath to hit, I will still play my Druid, but not as much as I will my Pally.
