Forum post of the day: How the other half lives
Uhohhotdog of Mathrezim has a leveling problem. In the General Discussion forum he announced that fails whenever he tries to level an Alliance character. He asked if others have this problem. Secksie of Tanaris said that she has the same problem, only she can't seem to manage to roll Horde.
It looks like the issues is not so much faction pride as friends and familiarity. Probably the most important factor is having friends or guildies to play with on the other side. Millaneous of Norgannon said that he doesn't care which side he plays, as long as he's playing with friends. Rummi of Ysera finds difficulty in breaking the link with his main character when playing on
I have to admit, I have trouble leveling
I've got a 41 Warlock out there that I haven't touched since long before the Burning Crusade, and I'm determined to play
What's your experience with going outside your usual faction?

Dude! Beauty and the Beast! Win!

I have the same problem. I've finally managed to get my first Horde character over 40 (LOLbelf Warlock). It is indeed harder, the quests are different (I've done the Alliance ones below 40 at least a dozen times), the bases are at different spots and you don't know people "on the other side".
And don't ask me about walking to the wrong Windmaster and right-clicking on him for a flight...

doh! I hate when that happens

I guess my biggest problem with the horde is they only have 2 races I can play. Tauren are awesome, and blood elves are tolerable. Still, I don't see how anyone can stand staring at any of the other three races for 70 levels. Ugly doesn't begin to cover it. I'd kill to be able to roll an Orc that looked even half as cool as Thrall.

I find it's more racial than anything. I have a hard time levelling anything other than an Orc. Even a Troll in the same starting area, it's just something psychological.

I totally agree with this. Myself and a group of friends thought we were sick of Horde on our original server so we rerolled Alliance on another. I got my draenei priest up to 25 and just can't stay focused on her. I'm so used to knowing what to do on Horde I get frustrated being so lost on a new faction. She still sits at 25 and in the meantime I rerolled to another server and leveled a BE Paladin to 67 so far.

I have played mostly Alliance and have two 70s and another on the way. But I have had three Horde alts for a long time, one of which I sincerely want to level all the way. It's hard because it's new content that I'm not familiar with, but it's like a new game because it's new content that I'm not familiar with. I just have to find time to level two alts at the same time and not run into the opposing faction's camp out of habit by mistake.

This is kind of a boring post.
Desertdwarf Jul 8th 2008 2:48AM
Yours was more so.
Kadamon Jul 8th 2008 2:18AM
I'm the same.
My highest Horde is 17...that's the highest I could bring myself to play it. I couldn't stand the zones, couldn't stand the quests, everything about it just made me almost disgusted with myself.
I don't know why, I just can't do it.
So, I'm gonna try again with a Deathknight. It might just be the lowbie quests I can't stand.

I would never stick through Alliance side if I wasn't duoing it with my friend. It's so lonely and silent. Sure, Alliance quests rock a lot, especially the lower level ones, but no guild, no group of friends, no raiding alliance, and the prospect that if we ever want to go into instances with our druids, we'll need to PUG.... it's hard.
(Nonetheless, we do it. We both love druids... and both don't enjoy playing Tauren. I've been clamoring for troll druids since forever. Oh well.)

Ok, I can accept that some people find the Arena to be a good thing. I myself like the Battlegrounds, where I go in, do my best, and feel good because I was rewarded. I don't have to be the best to feel like I did my work. At times, I'm the Kamikaze that tries to distract the other side away from the flag carrier. (I can't believe it when I actually get 3 hordies killing ME instead of the Flag Carrier.) I also despise people who insult the blogger.
But this is where the line on a comment you just made starts to get Fuzzy. "They're on a PvE server, also an experience I don't quite understand. I'm not as familiar with the zones and quests." If that was supposed to be two very different statements, then my mistake, and Good article. However, to me it looks like your comparing the difference between PVP servers and PVE servers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I played on a PVP server, it was exactly the same as when I played on a PVE server, except that when you entered a "Contested" zone, you became PVP automatically. I can't speak for any extra quests that there might have been, I was very much not able to get to level 20 in my time there. Am I just completely confused, or might this not be just a bit of fear that you won't be able to handle your surroundings, because every opposite faction person you pass won't actually be a threat?
My biggest problem seems to be that I can't play more then one character at a time.
kr3wman Jul 8th 2008 3:20AM
I can't play Dwarfs or Gnomes. I just can't. I have nothing against them or any kind of grudge, I just can't...play them. I dunno why. And I like the dwarfs too...
Namus Jul 8th 2008 3:41AM
Another huge deal for me is the capital cities, I'm so used to IF that I get lost even in some alliance towns (where the hell is the AH in Darn? :P ) and don't even get me started about Undercity...

There's actually a trick to how you can reroll and never look back; become a guild master.
Once you have 10+ whispers inc every minute, and people nagging right and left, a trip to the "other side" is a welcome vacation, that you enjoy and appreciate.

I actually had a similar epiphany just last night. I had an alt that I haven't really played much but was not in any guild. Just for fun I buffed a guild member and said a few things (this was like 9 months ago). To my knowledge no one knew I had this alt. But last night I was on the alt (level 36 bank toon at this point) and someone in the guild whispered me a question related to what I had said in guild chat earlier on my main.
Generally I sort of got to the point where I enjoyed having a character to myself. No obligations, or anything - just a toon I can selfishly enjoy. Well that character has been found out, so I looked at a level 4 human I had and I really started to think about how I was missing a good portion of the game. I've never gotten an alliance character above 20 so perhaps I should make the effort and just give it a try (with full rest bonus of course!). When I just want to play alone I have this nice little faction wall that severs nearly all ties to my main.

I think one of the main differences between Alliance and Horde is access to instances. Scarlet Monastery, the best instance for the level range, is located right on Horde territory, and conveniently located next to a capital city. You have Sunken Temple a stone throws away from Stonard, and Shadowfang Keep a zone away from Undercity.
Another thing is traveling to other cities. As horde you just take a zeppelin or a teleporter and you have access to three capital cities. Tauren start in Mul'gore and have to travel through two zones to get access to the three capitals.
Now to get from Teldrasil to Ironforge you have to take a boat to Darkshore then another boat from Darkshore to Wetlands. From Wetlands you run to Loch Modan, then to Dun Morogh, and finally you are in Ironforge.
Meira Jul 8th 2008 6:15AM
I hope that, with the installment of the Stormwind Harbour, they implement new boat routs: Menethil-SW or Auberdine-SW... that will help a lot of people and will avoid the starving crocolisks of wetlands and the orcs of Dun Algaz.

59 Troll priest as my highest Horde and I cannot be arsed to touch him for the last 11 levels
I do remember it as a lot of fun levelling him though.
'tmust be HFP too. /shiver.
