Know Your Lore: Alexstrasza the Lifebinder

Know Your Lore has covered the benevolent dragons in Warcraft before, but I've decided to highlight a few of them in preparation for Wrath of the Lich King. I feel that saving the best for last is a bunch of crap, so I'm going to start with my personal favorite: Alexstrasza. Admittedly, it isn't terribly hard for her to seal that favorite slot right now. Deathwing and Alexstrasza are the only two Aspects we've been exposed to in a very direct way for a substantial amount of time. To make things even better, she's a headlining character in Wrath.
Alexstrasza is one of five Dragon Aspects chosen and empowered by the Titans prior to their departure from Azeroth. Each of the Aspects was given a domain that they would protect, and have the power to control. Alexstrasza's domain is perhaps the most broad: Life. While all of the Aspects are interconnected and have some sway over one another, Alexstrasza is perhaps the most connected to the others because of her connection to life. Many use this to say she is the 'leader' of the Aspects, but as far as we know, they don't really have one. At least, not until Wrath. Maybe.
While being regarded as possibly the most powerful of the Aspects, she is also quite beloved. She's a kind, compassionate being, and she should be considering it's her job to protect all life. She's especially revered by people like druids, rangers and others with an attunement to nature, though she comes after Ysera in the eyes of druids. Unfortunately for Alexstrasza, the Old Horde did not really share this love for the Life-Binder... but before we get into that, let's back up a little. By a little, I mean about ten thousand years.
Nozdormu, would you lend us a hand?
Woooooosh! (That's the sound time makes, if you didn't know.)
Huzzah, here we are! Thanks, Nozdormu! As you can see, we've gone back in time by about ten thousand years! You can tell because the giant gaping wound that we call the Maelstrom is missing from the planet. What happened ten thousand years ago, you ask? Well, a couple of things. The War of the Ancients happened. The Sundering happened. The creation of the first World Tree happened. Before all of this (or during it, I suppose), something much more dire happened to the Dragon Aspects.
We won't get into the specifics about Deathwing's fall into corruption, you can read about that in Elizabeth Wachowski's piece about Neltharion. To make a long story short, Deathwing was once a good guy named Neltharion. He is the Aspect of Earth. He was buds with all of the other aspects prior to his fall, so he managed to convince all of them to inject a little of their essence into an artifact called the Dragon Soul, which would supposedly be used to beat back the Burning Legion during the War of the Ancients.
Turns out, it actually gave Deathwing power over the other Aspects, too. Malygos made the mistake of trying to stop him, and... okay, we'll talk about that another time. In the end, Malygos was pissed and crazed.
Basically, the Dragon Soul sucks. After a series of events involving Malfurion, Illidan, Azshara, and a bunch of demons (according to the War of the Ancients trilogy, at least), the Dragon Soul, renamed the Demon Soul, was sealed away from Deathwing.
Now, if we go a little closer to the present, about twenty years ago (give or take a few years), Deathwing found the Demon Soul, and manipulated our good friends the Dragonmaw Orcs into using it. What did they use it for? Well, you can't have a Dragonmaw Clan without Dragons, can we? They enslaved almost the entirety of the Red Dragonflight, including Alexstrasza and her number one boytoy Tyranastrasz. The Life-Binder was bound, starved, beaten, and forced to breed. Her eggs were taken from her, and the whelps were raised to be mighty drakes for the Dragonmaw riders.
Even after the Horde's defeat in the Second War, the Dragonmaw held Alexstrasza captive within Grim Batol. Deathwing's meddling wasn't done yet, however. He had been setting up a plot to use Rhonin Sue to get the Red Aspect moved out into the open, where he could finish the ol' gal off and steal what remained of her eggs to renew his own Dragonflight, which had slowly died out in his madness.
This failed. This failed a lot. Alexstrasza was actually freed when she was moved out into the open, with the help of Rhonin, Krasus, et cetera. The Dragon Soul was also destroyed, as far as we know. Alexstrasza is one of the few Reds to have made it out of Grim Batol alive, though other Red Dragons have taken up residence there for some currently unknown reason. Tyranastrasz was one of many that died there, and if you are feeling particularly morbid you can take a gander at his skull in the Ironforge Museum. I wonder how Alex feels about that.
The popular rumor about why the Red Dragonflight has such a presence at Grim Batol was that Alexstrasza slept deep within, resting after such trauma. That turns out to not be the case. It seems that come Wrath, she will be in Northrend with us, honoring a promise she made to the folk that rescued her at Grim Batol. She would always protect their races. Since Alexstrasza isn't where we thought she was, we have no idea what significance this area still holds for the Red Dragons. It might be something as simple as it's a sort of holy place to them now, in a way. Like a burial ground, or cemetery.
Now, going into Wrath, we don't know the exact details of what's going down... yet. We know that Malygos has regained consciousness after what went down back in the day, and is making up for lost time as far as controlling the domain given to him: Magic. He thinks that the mortal races are stirring up crap with the Arcane again, much like they did when the War of the Ancients was sparked. He is pretty much tearing up the place, and has it out for mages and wizards and such. Alexstrasza is, of course, indebted to the beings Malygos is now up against.
I'd like to think that Malygos has not truly 'snapped' and is simply being overly zealous to make up for lost time. After all, he has more or less missed out on... oh, nine or ten thousand years of Azerothian history. I'm pretty sure if the Cavewizard of Earth's Jurassic Period woke up today and saw airplanes and televisions he would freak out, too. We'll see, though!
Alexstrasza currently takes on the form of a High Elf, the mortal race that revered her the most throughout history. Her new top beau is Krasus, and she apparently has connections. We will leave Alexstrasza's bio here for now, because there's a whole new chapter waiting for us in Northrend, I'm sure.
If you want more information on Alexstrasza, there are a number of places you can look. For the raw facts, you can check out Wowwiki, as usual. To watch the stories unfold, I recommend reading the War of the Ancients trilogy and Day of the Dragon, despite my issues with the author.

"Rhonin Sue"
I LOL'd.
Loadead Jul 10th 2008 4:36PM
LMAO, that answered my ask a lore nerd question.
Randy Jul 10th 2008 4:37PM
If Malygos has been snoozing for 10k years, whats he doing fighting Deathwing with Rhonin, Alexstraza and the rest of the Aspects in the novel Day of the Dragon...are we to assume he woke up sometime earlier and his activities are just now causing issues?
Dewey Jul 10th 2008 5:15PM
That was a rather vague way of saying the madness that has hindered Malygos since the War of the Ancients will be healed by the time you encounter him in Wrath.

I love your storytelling style, it really makes what would be a really slow narrative fluid and fun :P
Great article as always.
BTW, the Demon Soul really, really got destroyed, and this was no small thing, since because of that the four "good" Aspects got their full strength back.
Before they were just really really big and powerful dragons, but even togeather they couldn't match Deathwing in power. After, old Mr.D did poopie in his proverbial pants and run off like a little girl.

"despite my issues with the author."
What issues are those?
Doffencrag Jul 10th 2008 5:11PM
I'm guessing one of them is Knaak's relentless push for Rhonin to be the ultimate WoW hero (thus the "Rhonin Sue" snipe).
At least, that was my beef with Knaak.
alex.rushing Jul 10th 2008 5:20PM
Knaak is not a bad writer, but let's just say that his WoW writing could be summed up as 'bad fanfic endorsed by Blizzard' and leave it at that.
Siona Jul 10th 2008 5:17PM
I would say the issues include the fact that Knaak the Hack ACTUALLY gets work at Blizzard anymore. e_e

His writing style is a poor fit for Warcraft. His writing comes across as trying to further his own characters ('Rhonin is a maverick!' 'But he's our only hope.') with no regard for the lore characters involved. Warcraft also has a history of strong female leads. Jaina, Sylvanas, Alleria, etc.
Knaak seems to love him some weak females. Sylvanas and Alleria are sisters. The Windrunner family. Both are obviously very strong female leads, who can stand on their own. Sylvanas leads the Forsaken now, even. Knaak created himself a third sister (Vereesa), which was ogled and manhandled all through Day of the Dragon, and despite her claim to hate humans, Rhonin was the dreamiest guy in the world and then they did the nasty. And then Vereesa spent the next three Knaak-written books pregnant and barefoot in Dalaran with -gasp- twins! There have never been half elf twins before! :O
My list goes on, but we can sum it up this way: Knaak is an old school fantasy writer. He clings to old school pulp fantasy ways of writing. He's the kind of fantasy fiction that the genre got mocked for, for so long. Warcraft broke out of that in a lot of ways (though not all of them) and Knaak took all of that a step backwards and plunged it into stupid.
Medros Jul 10th 2008 9:51PM
I agree, Alex, that Warcraft has strong females, but they are not the only leads. I did not see Vereesa as "manhandled all through Day of the Dragon", but that she wisely used her attributes that made the Paladin and the Dwarf and many others want her to her advantage. Still, even though she was very cunning and careful with herself and her heart, she still fell for Rhonin. Perhaps you are the one and only person in the world who cannot fathom falling for the unlikely one.
You mention that there have never been half-elf twins as if this is an absolute impossibility, but I would ask you, how do you know? Do you know with 100% certainty that the anatomy of the Elf and the Human is incompatible? Are you Chris Metzen's pseudonym, and therefore can make the decisions on whether this is biologically possible? If you are, then you should be fired if this travesty, as you seem to think the entire works of Knaak in the Warcraft universe was, was allowed to be published.
Richard Knaak is a writer. Chris Metzen oversaw, and still oversees, the lore side of the Warcraft universe, Starcraft universe, and all the other franchises Blizzard has. If you have issue with what was allowed to be published, take it up with him, not the person he hired to write it. Personally, I look forward to seeing Rhonin, Tirion, Krasus, and Vereesa in the Wrath expansion, because I have loved all but one of the Warcraft books so far, and look forward to the many coming out soon.

I don't think "using your attributes" to your advantage is an example of a strong female at all, if you are referring to her using her body to get her way. I would say that's a very large step from a strong 'Warcraftian' female. Yes, I just made that word up. Using her body to get what she wants is exactly what I was saying. Knaak is an 'old school' Fantasy author. The type that would write about the busty barbarian woman thrusting her heaving bosom in the bad guy's general direction to give him a nosebleed.
"You mention that there have never been half-elf twins as if this is an absolute impossibility, but I would ask you, how do you know?"
It was something that had been pointed out by the author. It's another layer on the cake of Rhonin's Unbeatable Epic Awesomeness. He's so awesome that he traveled back in time, taught Illidan magic, saved the world (for the third time), and oh yeah, he didn't just get Vereesa pregnant, he got her pregnant with TWINS. Oh man oh man, Rhonin is SO AWESOME.

"Knaak is an 'old school' Fantasy author"
I don't understand what you mean by this. I'd like some explanation of him being "old school".
Never having read any of the WoW novels beyond the first few pages I'm quite curious. Do you mean Howard old school? D&D novelizations? Dunsany? Old school covers a lot of ground and I need a framework to get your statement.
If you mean, as I suspect, nothing but jugs shoved in the faces of heroes, Joanna Russ covered that in S&S long ago, as did Fritz Leiber (who coined the phrase Sword & Sorcery). If you're coming from D&D novelizations, back up and read the roots of the genre before it got massively blandified, to coin a word. Truly good fantasy novels are rare stuff last twenty years. It's mostly Terry Brooks and Wheel of Time snore fests spread over ten volumes.
Fans of the bland: send hate mail too...bah, just send it to yourself.

Rhonin Sue LOL.
That is so true. *two thumps up*
Slumber Jul 10th 2008 6:31PM
Alex's title in WotLK is actually so I guess that's a pretty official endorsement as to her being the leader of the dragons. I'm really looking forward to questing at the dragonshrines, I love the whole dragonflight lore.
Slumber Jul 10th 2008 6:34PM
Uh, that's supposed to say Queen of the Dragons as her title, btw. Dunno why it got cut out.
Kaeb Jul 11th 2008 10:56AM
It reads the greater than and less then used in guild tags and titles as if it were html. :(
Chris Jul 10th 2008 6:40PM
Although I am not a fan of Knaak's style..it is a means to an end. I love the lore in this game and Blizzard allows him to write the stories so I will read them.
BTW it was the destruction of the Demon Soul in Day of the Dragon that gave Malygos his sanity back.
Medros Jul 10th 2008 9:57PM
I believe the lore we will see in Wrath and have seen in various places is that the Netherwing Dragon essences and eggs that Tyri(humanoid form for the Blue Dragon Tyrygosa), who we quest for in Netherstorm, takes back to Malygos is what brings him out of the insanity that he was in when Krasus(AKA Korialstrasz) finds him in Day of the Dragon. The rending of the Demon Soul was only to return the power that Neltharion tricked the dragon's and their aspects into giving up in the war.
