How to start your own WoW blog
I've been a blogger since before the term "blog" existed. (In the mid-90s, we called it a "diary" on our "zine.") I've been blogging about WoW for about a year now. For some reason, people really like to read and blog about WoW, which is the main reason WoW Insider even exists. WoW is a social game so it lends itself to group discussion. People want to share their experiences and their knowledge so much that there are literally thousands of WoW blogs out there. If you've been bitten by the blogging bug and want to start writing about your own game exploits, here's a 5-step mini-guide for you after the break. The simplest way to get started is to use one of the free blog hosting services. Blogger and Wordpress are the easiest to use, but if you are super tech-savvy or design-oriented TypePad and SquareSpace might allow you to express your personality a little better. More here.
Step 2: Determine your goals
Goals don't need to be a formal thing. Simply decide what you'd like to do with your blog. For example, you can focus on one particular class -- a very popular choice -- or write up your guild's accomplishments, detail your RP adventures, compare your alts, or anything you want. Also, think about your audience: do you just want to share your thoughts with your friends or do you want to become one of the WoW power bloggers? More here.
Step 3: Figure out your slant
Since there are a lot of WoW blogs already, you need to decide what you'd like to bring to the party. I originally started my blog with the idea that women gamers might have a different point of view on popular games. However, I found out quickly that instead I preferred simply writing about the shaman class from a beginner's point of view. More here.
Step 4: Become part of the WoW blog community
Read other blogs! Since you're already reading WoW Insider, I'm going to assume you follow at least a few other WoW blogs. Reading these can help spur ideas for you and can help you in other ways. Join Blog Azeroth or Warcraft Bloggers. Get your badge on Entrecard.
Step 5: Write, write, write!
Now, nobody says you must write every day, but try to write a post as often as you can to keep interest levels high. And don't stress about what you're writing. Be casual, be formal, be long, be short, be serious, be funny... but just write!
Updated: We'll be writing a series of more detailed posts on this topic, breaking the steps down further!

Good post! I know I loved to blog myself, and now I maintain our guild's blog and I love it! (Oh and a LOT of my posts are inspired by WOW Insider! Y'all rock!) http://www.excincin.com/wordpress/

Shhh! Don't encourage them! I've got enough competition already.

Natalie: This is great! I've been thinking about leaping into the Blogosphere for what feels like ages, so the timing of your well-written post today couldn't have been better. (Also: Stone Falcon pwns.)

Your suggestion #1 is enough just to stop anyone normal from getting started. Those services are bloated, not easy to use for a beginner. The easiest thing to do is register at http://tumblr.com/ and from there it's easy.

Blogger isn't that complicated. (Though, I haven't touched it in a LONG time...) I guess it really just depends on how savvy one is. Though, I agree Tumblr is a good alternative.

I've never used Tumblr, but i find Blogger to be very simple and easy to use.

I've never heard of Tumblr (ugh...yet another web site missing a vowel) but Blogger is mind-bogglingly easy to use. If you can't figure out how to use Blogger, you shouldn't be using the internet.
Anybody who can install WoW can use Blogger easily.

Wow. So that's Tumblr.
Okay ...
Where do I click to set up an account? All I see are Javascript video players, links to some obscure comedians' pages, a complete lack of a navigable aesthetic, and a bunch of really pretentious emo Blog entries that really seem better suited to LiveJournal.

the link at the top that says 'sign up'

Been thinking of making a Blog myself On not just WoW but life in general... I think i'm quite funny so humor will be a big part of it.

How do you do hover over WOWhead links?
Roboticus Jul 11th 2008 5:19PM
You need to add code to the header of your page that loads some Javascript (found at wowhead) that you can then reference in item links. I don't know how possible this would be if you don't have your own web-hosting that gives access to the source code behind you blog's software.

In WordPress, it's not too hard. In my blog I've got a few 'search' boxes on the right-hand side. I place the WoW Head code before the search box code. The user never sees the code, and any item I link to pops up. Kinda neat and simple, really. I'm not sure how it would work with other services, but as far as I know, the code just needs to be 'in' the page anywhere you want the item to pop-up. (Technically, you should be able to put it at the start of every post, if it came down to it.)

If you happen to be running Drupal to start your blog, I wrote a module that does just that.
Open source ftw.

I've been using blogger for years for various blogs and it's quite easy, but sophisticated enough for the mid-range blogger that likes to tweak. The interface is all drag drop now, for designing your page, and making entries, adding photos and video, making lists and such is a snap. Works great with the Firefox add-on Scribefire, as well, so you can blog while you browse.
As for focus, I like the blogs that are one topic, but some of the most fun blogs are the people that will talk about anything. There's usually some sort of "slant" (funny, light, deep, technical, QQ, etc.) but any topic is fair game. Blogs DO tend to evolve over time, but the old writer's adage works well here: "Write What You Know!"

I started one a few days ago, I have no idea how to do all the cool graphics on the header like you guys do though. Maybe someone can help me out?

All other suggestions welcome, and please comment on the posts!
One more thing, how do you get your blog to be known and have more visitors?
fridaymacfay Jul 17th 2008 8:36PM
First thing ya might wanna do is set blogger's controls to allow public viewing. Right now it's set to invitation only (so you have to send someone an invite before they can view the blog).
