walk outside of the inn and stand either right next to the golin bruisers or the big ogre guards in front of the hut with the arena vendors inside, do your combine and as soon the elemental pops out, blink away into the direction of the guards you're NOT next to (i.e. if by the goblins, blink to the ogres and vice versa.)

the elemental will now get utterly destroyed and at most he will get one nuke off on you if you're slow (could just use mana shield, i suppose.)

the drawback of this is that you won't be able tag and loot the corpse of the elemental (which would give you something like 1-4 motes of fire and mana each.) it's a bit of a loss, but i finally just stopped caring about it and spent nearly a year making spellcloth like that while my mage was a lvl 60 in some hilariously bad gear (i've been leveling him of late, actually. he hit 66 yesterday.)
