Wowhead shows Hunters some love
It seems like just a couple of days ago Wowhead made a major addition to their site in the form of Wrath of the Lich King alpha talent calculators. Oh, that's right, it was just a couple of days ago. Well, today they've added some more new features, and these ones are all for Hunters. That should take some of the sting out of your talents not being released yet.- A training calculator for pet skills (though this will all be completely overhauled for Wrath, it should prove very useful until then)
- A comparison table of all pet types, listing their modifiers to damage, health, and armor, abilities they can learn, levels at which they can be tamed, and diet. All columns are filterable and sortable, in case you really need to see a listing of the highest-armor pets that can Bite and eat cheese (it's boars, by the way).
- A frankly amazing gallery of all the different skins for all the different pet types, with 3D models and links to tamable pets that use those skins.

I just hope with the new talent system they normalize all pets to be equal. Then hunters can just choose any pet they want for looks and it can still be the best dps or tanking. There's so many cool looking pets out there but nobody wants them because their stat modifiers aren't very good.

Yes please!
I'm sick of seeing nothing but cats, ravagers, and PVP scorpids all the time.

"I doubt my level 55 hunter is up to taming a 64 elite"
It's been a while since I've tamed a new pet with my hunter, but I'm pretty sure you can't tame pets that are higher level than you, since you get the pet at the level you tame it at and your pet can't outlevel you.

correct

You got my hopes up with what petopia already offers :(
csarcops Jul 12th 2008 8:18PM
I was thinking that myself...Petopia already has all this info (except the talent calculator) and I like their layout better.

The first normalization was the worst thing to happen to pets. I still see people with different pets. While some have the "best" stats the pet is also heavily dependent on your play style. Otherwise you wouldnt see people with dragonhawks and windserpents at all.

I am the only one that is not really impressed by these proposed pet talent tree's? It seems to be the exact same as the point system that we already have except that some pet families have 1 extra ability that they can learn at the bottom of each tree. The new abilities are cool, i guess, but i was definitely expecting something more. I dont know, maybe its just me.

The pet skill calculator on Wowhead is not the new pet talent trees. Those have not been released yet. The one on Wowhead is just a graphical representation of the current pet skill system.

ooo ok, well that is certainly good news..i knew all that stuff looked terribly familiar xD

Aren't those spiders stealthed in Blade Edge aswell?
STereo Jul 12th 2008 11:00PM
Is there anything in this article we didn't already know?

Actually there's a point, I think it's 33% crit, where windserpents/dragonhawks start to out DPS ravagers because of the way lightning breath works. So what you're seeing isn't people being unique, just a little more min/maxing. I really hope that all pets become equal and the talents are what makes them stronger. If I want a DPS crab then by golly I should have a DPS crab!

30%, close:)

I realise that by saying this every single Hunter that reads this is going to flame my face off, but I must;
Why no Warlock pet love from the Devs? :( I have a Hunter and a Warlock and while it is true that Warlock pets offer interesting uses in different situations, when you get down to it, Hunter pets blow Warlock ones away (especially in PvP where melee can easily 1-3 shot a pet removing all of said Warlock's defenses). I'm not asking for Hunter pets, but Warlock pet talents or even just better gear scaling (for Hunter pets, too) would do wonders.
jrb Jul 12th 2008 5:45PM
exactly, and to be fair, this will be taking information found out by the guys at petopia over the years, and re-packaging it.
to be honest, petopia (created by bamoo and maintained by mania) has been the best place for hunter information for years, literally. And will continue to be. i'd hate to the site see mania stopping updates to the site because people simply didn't go to it any more, and head to wowhead instead.

Warlock dmg already far outdoes most hunters.. as far as i see in my raid guild anyway. I think warlock pets also offer more utility to a raid group than hunter pets do. And, though not really a balance thing, it would be handy to summon my pets on the fly as i need them like a warlock, rather than trucking back to the stable master.
and yeah this pet talen tree thing on wow head is nothing new. as mentioned by several ppl above petopia has always been the place to for hunters and i hope that remains the same. The lady that runs it has no raid exp and little group exp as far as hunter play but she researches her tail off in getting us the latest and most accurate information. How many hunters do you know that are lvl 70 and would lvl a pet from 10ish just to get information on scaling and lvling.
