Death Knights and racial bonuses
Death Knights are in the unique position of being open to every race (Warriors can choose any race but Blood Elf). This means you will have a lot of options for trying to pick the best racial bonuses for your new DK; complicating the matter is the fact that DKs can both tank and DPS. Milkgas, of Anvilmar (US), recently wrote in with the opinion that Dwarves would be optimal for a tanking DK, due to their frost resistance (speculating that frost will be prevalent in Wrath). But let's go over the options (listing only the racials that seem relevant to DKs):
- Horde:
- Orc: Blood Fury would be handy for DPS, not so good for tanks; Hardiness, on the other hand, would be nice, if not essential, for a tank to have; and Axe Specialization is helpful, given that axes will be available for DKs to use as rune weapons (as well as swords and maces)
- Tauren: War Stomp is great for PvP. Endurance is probably the best overall tanking racial out of all the races. And Nature Resistance will probably be handy somewhere, though it's not a huge deal.
- Troll: Berserking is a useful, if occasional, boost.
- Forsaken: I still contend that Will of the Forsaken is overpowered. May certainly come in handy while tanking, and of course in PvP. Shadow Resistance, like Nature Resistance, is a marginal benefit.
- Blood Elf: It remains to be seen how the Mana Tap/Arcane Torrent system will work with DKs' Runic Power, but this has the potential to be very useful. Magic Resistance is, numerically, stronger than any other race's inherent resistance - you wind up with 25 points of resistance overall.
- Alliance:
- Dwarf: Stoneform can be very useful to remove certain debuffs while tanking. If Frost ends up being a major damage type in Wrath, Frost Resistance might be the best inherent resistance to have, though this is still a small amount.
- Gnome: Escape Artist is lovely for PvP. Also Arcane Resistance.
- Human: Diplomacy is very pleasant to have in late-game PvE for faction grinding. Sword and Mace Specialization will both be usable to the Death Knight.
- Night Elf: Quickness is good for a tank. Nature Reistance again, too.
- Draenei: Gift of the Naaru is especially useful given that the DK is not a healing class (with the exception of various talented abilities like Blood Tap). As far as I know, it has not yet been revealed whether Draenei DKs will get Heroic Presence or Inspiring Presence, but either would be helpful. And Shadow Resistance, woo.
So which is best? My vote would be Orc for DPS, Tauren for tanking on the Horde side; and Human or Draenei for either role on the Alliance side. There are, of course, many reasons to choose a race other than racial bonuses, which after all tend to be fairly minor in the long run, but if you really can't decide, this might help give one race the edge. What race are you going to make your DK?

| Troll | |
| Forsaken | |
| Blood Elf | |
| Dwarf | |
| Gnome | |
| Human | |
| Night Elf | |
| Draenei | |
| I don't plan to roll a Death Knight | |
| I'll be making more than one |

for me its a choice of undead or blood elf for horde (depends on how well the tap/torrent thing goes), and draenei for alliance.

Dont know why people keep wondering about the mana tap/torrent thing. Wont be any different than it is for a BE rogue. basically, the mana tap is practically useless and gives no benefit. And Torrent will serve as a 2 sec silence. Torrent restores mana, not energy, not runic power.
Tresk Jul 14th 2008 12:39PM
well the torent does indeed restore the rogues energy
Ikarus Jul 14th 2008 12:48PM
really? Then I stand corrected. I could have sworn it didn't

Manatap well atleast arcane torrent can be very handy to a rogue. that few seconds of silence can really screw a person over.

Ikarus, L2Read noob.

"Arcane Torrent - active - (Rogue only)
Silences all enemies within 8 yards for 2 sec. In addition, you gain 10 Energy for each Mana Tap charge currently affecting you - Instant - 2 min cooldown."
You might think about knowing what you're talking about before opening your mouth.

Regardless of how the torrent works the silence is a great addition. Never mind the added resist. The whole point of DKs is to caster tank. May as well take the race that plays that up the most... BE.
Alliance side the choice gets harder. Prolly human or draenei. Because of the exp and hit.

Mana Tap/Arcane Torrent is incredibly useful for a rogue. The extra way to silence, and to silence multiple mobs, is great...but not the point. Having access to an extra 30 energy at a moments notice is a huge boost to burst DPS; it's like a racial thistle tea that never runs out of mats.

Belf mostly to be paladin's *evil twin* so to speak.
Charlie Jul 14th 2008 9:11AM
there's just something about a draeni DK that i love. Must be the whole, was saved from evil by velen, then went evil anyway, and now is good again thing.
Plus, being able to heal yourself as melee is win. And i just think they'll look badass.
Blacksword Jul 14th 2008 2:19PM
Thats exactly what I was thinking
noyme Jul 26th 2008 3:28PM
dreanie looking cool?
cant happen. They are big blue and have hooves and tentacles. the worst thing blizzard ever added to the game
FelPower Jul 14th 2008 9:13AM
Without a doubt Orc, the huge benefit Blood Fury can be do overall DPS and general attack power is immense and since DK's don't really have any sort of healing effect the debuff from this racial is insignificant at best. Aswell as "Command" this boosts the damage for your ghouls by 5%- may not sound alot but im sure along with those nice dmg boosting Unholy talents, im sure it can come in very useful. And also like Eliah said Axe Spec- also just another good bonus.
draeth Nov 13th 2008 9:06PM
Dont have any heals? Have you tried a DK yet or seen any vids of them grinding? DKs heal themselves almost as paladins do with seal of light and wisdom.
Digital Prophet Jul 14th 2008 9:17AM
I must just be stupid (no clapping please) but there is something about Alliance Deathknights that is about as right as bubblegum pink corvettes.
TheClapper Jul 14th 2008 10:53AM
Yeah, Alliance deathknights....Arthas a human....who knew?
Elmo Jul 14th 2008 9:17AM
Didn't they say that along with +spell/healing to be changed to spell power they also would change +hit and +crit to be universal for both physical and magic dps?
so Heroic/Inspiring Presence would just give 1% universal hit.
Dan Jul 14th 2008 10:07AM
I don't know if they have announced it, but they have certainly merged them in alpha according to what I've heard.
So yes, Heroic Presence and Inspiring Presence will probably have the same effect (and be merged into one ability).
darian Jul 14th 2008 11:37AM
Not exactly.
+hit/spell hit and +crit/spell crit on *items* have each been merged. Talents and abilities will still affect one or the other.
For example, Totem of Wrath is still 3% Spell Hit/Crit and does nothing for melee. LotP Aura is 5% Melee Crit only etc.
ninjasuperspy Jul 14th 2008 9:17AM
Deathknight.info leads me to believe that a full torrent stack is good for 30 RP. Also, with the hit/crit/haste combination, wouldn't Heroic and Inspiring Presence just all become one thing with +Hit for both spells and physical?
