Addon Spotlight: TourGuide (UPDATED)
Amid the madness of yesterday's patch, there has been some desperate drama happening in the official UI & Macros Forums. It seems the massively popular leveling addon QuestHelper has encountered some troubles, with many users not able to use their beloved quest... helper. As with many crossroads in life, this presents an opportunity to consider a change, or at least a reason to try something else out while the developer of QuestHelper figures out the disconnect. Some time ago, I stopped using the memory-hogging giant in favor of one of Tekkub's creations. TourGuide may very well be Tekkub's greatest mod to date. It serves much the same function as QuestHelper, but it takes a different approach, one that doesn't eat up nearly as much memory. To me, it was sort of like selling my huge truck for a fast, agile Subaru. (Which I did in RL, yay!)
I've been promising to profile this bad boy for a couple of months now, as I've yet to finish my own work on it, but I felt like you all needed an alternative. Besides, you may end up swearing by TourGuide like I do, it was more my style. (I've been working on a guide for TourGuide, but my day job has been bogging me down.)
TourGuide is more akin to a traditional leveling guide than the so-called smart system of QuestHelper. With the "helper", I felt like I wasn't doing quests in the right order, at the right level and that I was missing out on some great quest chains.Basically, what TourGuide is doing for you, is stepping you through a leveling guide, along the lines of the much-loved guides of Jame or Joanna. Like the traditional leveling guides, TourGuide offers tidbits of advice and shows tips when you hover your mouse over the on-screen element. Tekkub does a pretty good job describing his addon:
"TourGuide is an interactive leveling guide addon. It is designed to provide the user with a streamlined order of quest completion with smart detection. It is also designed for easy creation of "guides" for users with little-to-no programming knowledge."
There are a number of built-in features that facilitate quick and easy leveling, here's a list!
- Automatic detection of objective completion
- Detect quest accept, completion and turnin
- Detect travel (by foot, flight, boat and stone)
- Detection of flight point discovery
- Detection of Hearth point change
- Conditionals based on class, level and item possession (only tell the player to accept the quest if they have the item that starts the quest)
- Small "lego block" style frame shows current objective, detailed tooltips on hover
- "Use item" frame, for those annoying quests where you have to use an item on a mob before you kill it, or you have to equip something, or you have to use an item to start a quest
- Pop out frame for detailed view of quest sequence
- OptionHouse-based guide config panels
- Automatic mapping of coordinates with TomTom or Cartographer
Thus far, there are a number of guides available for players, covering the 1-70 grind, plus some dailies. TourGuide also supports user-created guides, adding a huge bonus to players like myself who have a certain way of doing things and would like to have a more personal touch with the guides. (After leveling a few toons, you typically establish a certain way of doing things.) Tekkub has provided a page of instructions on how to edit TourGuide guides for those of you wanting to customize your own guide, or make changes to an existing one.
The memory footprint of TourGuide, even when partnered with TomTom, is significantly less exhausting than QuestHelper. So, if you're a current QuestHelper user and have found yourself up the creek with no proverbial paddle, TourGuide is your solution. If you're new to this type of addon, check out the TourGuide / TomTom duo, I'd bet you'll be pleasantly surprised. If your QuestHelper is functioning, try this out regardless; you never know when something might just make more sense to you.
That was it for me, TourGuide just worked for my playstyle. I use it, therefore it has my stamp of approval, for what its worth. Dismissed!
Tekkub just reminded me an important feature! If you are using Lightheaded, which I would personally advise, TourGuide will query Lightheaded for quest accept and turn-in locations. Together TourGuide, Lightheaded (with Doubewide) and TomTom form the Holy Trinity of Leveling. As many commentors have mentioned, this is really intended for players working on a second (or beyond) level 70 character. If you're working on your first toon (or one starting on the opposing faction) I would highy recommend that you read the quests, enjoy the lore and savor your experiences. Good luck with your alts!

Actually, TG initially started out as an attempt to find and map coords for your current zone's quests automatically from LH. I found, however, that automatically finding the coords from LH was not a fun thing since they're all pulled from user comments, and thus prone to lots of errors.
So the second thought was a database of where to go for each quest. This would, of course, have to be maintained by hand. At this point I realized that it's much simpler (and more useful) to provide pre-scripted leveling guides. With this I can draw off existing guides for reference, and I don't have to provide coords for every single quest, just the ones that aren't right next to you when you need to do them. In the end it's much less work to maintain than a massive coord DB would be, and it has the added benefit of using a file format that the "average joe user" can edit, if they get the bug up their ass to do so.
Sure, starting with TG on anything but a fresh level 1 is a minor hiccup figuring out what quests you've already done... but that quickly smooths out after a level or two following the guide.

what I would really like is a mod that can help me find low lv quests.
For eg, my alt is a lv 70 Belf and I'm sick of sitting on a retina-destroying turkey. I would love to get enough rep with another faction that I am not familiar with so I can buy one of their mounts. This mostly means going to their starting area and clicking every single NPC in sight until I find one that gives me a quest, but it's frustrating and means alot of fruitless running around.
Short of starting yet another alt of that faction and doing all the early quests so I have some kind of reference, I can't think of anything that will help me.
Any ideas?

Just use the starter zone guides in TG. Just be aware that a number of the quests may not be available as there are usually a number of race-specific quests in the starter zones.

Stupid question. What is the little ? for in the quest window?
Azyriel Jul 17th 2008 4:30AM

Stupid blog comments bite my ass again... there's an icon legend on that page...
Azyriel Jul 17th 2008 4:30AM
Alright that doesn't help I'm sorry for not being more clear i meant the [?]. I've already seen the legend cause its in the addon in game to but it doesn't say anything about the [?]. Does that just mean the next quest is a turn in?
Tekkub Jul 17th 2008 6:09PM
That means the objective has a note. The idea is to make you say "WTF is that?" and subconsciously move your mouse over it at the same time. Suddenly a tooltip pops up with a note in it!
Azyriel Jul 17th 2008 8:05PM
Well it definitely did that think you for clearing that up Tekkub!

I don't know if it's been mentioned but as soon as I logged on yesterday and saw QH didn't work, I simply went to Curse and there was already a fixed version. Zuh?
Would help if you showed exactly how TG marks your map or whatever, and I don't think I can live without the new sidebar quest info with QH (even shows friend's quests on the side).
Yaimano Jul 17th 2008 2:10PM
Oh another thing I absolutely love about the newer QH, the tooltips on mobs with that shows if they're related to a quest and the quest status (like # of drops, or # killed) even for your group members. I think I'd miss it too much. :(

Woah, I hope you opted for the STI version. That beauty rocks though the “normal” version is great as well! Imagine how amazing it would be to drive it on a public road with no speed limit...
Greetings to the land of the free from Germany, the land of the free speed freaks! ;-)

The main reason for QH being so slow is that it does Real Hard Maths to work out the optimum route to do your quests in.
This is massively non-trivial, and I'm really impressed with how well they've managed to do it, but... there's not actually all that much need for it when new quests come along so rarely. Better to have a static db of quest info that's optimised once by the developer than 10 million PCs maxed out trying to solve the travelling goblin problem.
MisterGrok Jul 17th 2008 9:09AM
That's an indicator that there's a note for that quest or item, be it just coordinates or a description of where to go or what to do.
Hover your mouse over it and it'll pop-up.

I've been leveling an alt for what seems like forever now. Using questhelper, didn't really feel like I was getting anywhere because I was constantly running around, and I really wasn't leveling fast at all. I was thinking about switching to something else, but really didn't know of any other addons..
Then I updated QuestHelper... The huge memory leak, then crashing finally convinced me to uninstall the thing. A guild member suggested TourGuide to me. So I installed it. It was difficult to get used to (especially since I was in the middle of questing in Un'goro when I started using it), but once you get to a new zone you haven't been to yet, its pretty much smooth sailing.
The thing thats sorta funny, is that now I lvl faster, I get into a questing groove with TourGuide, and I forget to train my new abilities... gogo lvl 65 druid with lvl 62 abilities.
I love TourGuide.

idunno. I'll always prefer Lightheaded over a mod that is always showing when it's enabled. I like lightheaded because it uses WoWhead comments, and you can only see it in the quest pane. I generally try to do every quest with no outside help, but for those tricky few quests (where is Mankrik's wife???), or to get a general strat for solo'ing that elite mob. 'GoTo' mods just take out the fun in questing.

This Addon is awesome. I was using QuestHelper for a long time, but it broke, unable to map coordinates and waypoints or something.
I downloaded this, started a new toon, a hunter, ( I already have 3 at 70 ), and haven't looked back since.
One thing I really like about it, is if you're a hunter and there's a new skill to be learned in a zone, it will tell you to stable your pet, and tame a specific creature.
I started with the quest guide on Azuremyst Isle and it's mapped everything up to my current location, which is level 25 in Wetlands.
The best feature I found was that it seems to pick up all relevant questlines.. no useless stuff. For example, when I was done on Bloodmyst Island, it had me go to Darkshore, and pick 3-4 few questlines, relevant to my level, then guided me to Ashenvale. It skips all the "low level" quests.
I've been taking my time, and already level 25, and only about 20 hours play time.
I love it!

Now what we need is for Routes to accept a list of waypoints assembled from TourGuide (maybe via TomTom), create a new route from them, and optimize it the same way it does for gathering routes. It would be a little limited in that you'd have to create each circuit with one waypoint from each quest--or add them as you went along and re-optimize--unless Routes was also made smart enough to take the requisite order of completion into account, which isn't neeeded for gathering purposes.
But, either way, then the whole route could be displayed in GatherHUD.
My complaint with the current setup (I'm using LightHeaded+TomTom+Routes, and GatherMate) is that I can't generate a route map for anything that isn't resource gathering nodes.
I can get steering from TomTom to whatever waypoint I designate as 'next'--but I can't see an ordered list of the waypoints I've set of have keys for "next waypoint", "previous waypoint," etc.
