Achievements officially announced for Wrath
As we suspected from some hints in the alpha, Wrath of the Lich King will indeed feature achievements. Blizzard just put up a page about them on the Wrath site, including lots of juicy information:
- The system will launch with over 500 achievements, from all corners of the game: exploration, PvE, PvP, professions, and "character development." They promise something for everyone.
- Some achievements will have rewards, but the rewards will be "purely cosmetic and just for fun" (examples are vanity pets, tabards, and titles).
- Additional achievements will come "with each new WoW content update" (which I take to mean "major patch or expansion").
- Each achievement yields a certain number of achievement points.
- The achievements window includes a log of all achievements completed with the date on which you finished, as well as all the ones you're currently working on.
- Achievements will be able to be tracked like quests can be now.
- Right-clicking another player will let you compare your
e-peenachievements with theirs. - Unlocking a new achievement will play a distinctive animation and sound, and announce the achievement automatically to your guild and anyone in the area.
- Achievements will be visible on the Armory.
- There are three kinds of achievements:
- Simple achievements, where you just have to complete a goal (like "give 10 hugs")
- Progressive achievements: if you complete one to collect 10 vanity pets, you can now work on one to collect 25
- Meta achievements: completing a set of achievements may be, itself, an achievement
- There are also several categories of achievements (with an example for each):
- PvP ("Win 10 ranked arena matches in a row")
- Dungeon and Raid (each end boss in each raid and dungeon will be an achievement)
- Professions (each new tier of profession skill is an achievement)
- Quests (such as completing a certain number of quests)
- Events (seasonal events will have their own achievements)
- World exploration ("explore all of Kalimdor")
- Reputation ("get Exalted with every faction")
- General: these are said to "tend toward the whimsical" ("getting a shave and a haircut")
Finally, the page mentions "Feats of Strength," which "represent the past glories of Azeroth." These are worth no points and are not displayed in the normal Achievements interface; they mostly have to do with the old world (old PvP ranks, for instance, or rare mounts). As such, they will be applied retroactively.
Overall this promises to be a pretty cool system, and I am definitely looking forward to it (and hoping it doesn't trigger my obsessive impulses and make me try to collect them all). Still unknown is what the achievement points will be used for: just a fun score? Is this how we'll get access to the vanity rewards, or are they going to be tied to particular achievements? As always, if we find anything out, we'll keep you posted.

Finally, I'll have something to show for my near compulsive desire to explore every area on the map ;-)

Achievements/titles were one of the things I liked about LOTRO when I played it. Having a wide range of titles to use for your character was kind of cool, and trying to find all of the hidden ones (like using /beg 50 times or something like that) was always entertaining.

Awesome! This is a great way to get people back to the old world and yet another thing the people who complain they have nothing to do between content patches can do.
If they plan on getting us to collect stuff we should get an extra bag slot or much bigger bags.
This is such an exciting idea IMO

Hopefully not at the same time... see: Aldor/Scryer.

... or Shen'dralar (who I haven't even discovered), Winterspring trainers, the Desolace Centaur Clans, Hydraxian Waterlords (I play a Draenei)

Then again, I'm going to be a little disappointed if there's a big focus on retroactive achievements because although I have been playing since launch, participated in the AQ opening, cleared all pre-TBC raids, etc., I'm not playing on my original account anymore and I have just rerolled a character that will be my new "main." My original pre-TBC characters don't even exist anymore.
Oh well, guess I might miss out on some nice achievements then.

Achievement Unlocked: Dark Betrayer. You have quit WoW in favor of KOTOR Online.
Btw, KOTOR mmo just announced.

If only these achievements were placed into some kind of tome that listed knowledge of their achievements.
Oh wait...

Don't start with this "WoW is ripping off WAR" crap. LotRO had achievements before WAR. City of Heroes had achievements (called badges) 7 months before WoW was originally released. I'm sure some other games had them before that as well. The only valid complaint here is "What took so long?"

The better question would be: Is it coincidence that blizzard waited to implement this achievement system as their largest competitor is close to coming out with a similiar feature?
As people have said, there have been tons of games to have done this before, so why did WoW wait until Warhammer is so close to coming out to add this feature to their game?
turkeyspit Jul 17th 2008 2:35PM
While on the one hand, I think this is a creative addition to the game, I am dreading the ineveitable outcome from having such a system.
Its bad enough these days that when posting on the forums or talking in /trade, people right away look at your gear and Arena ratings as an indication of your credibility. With Achievements in place, it will progress even further to: "You have no right to your opinion, you didnt kill Razelikh the Defiler" , or "STFU n00b. L2Hogger".
Sigh..

@Tcgjarhead
OK, let's go with your line of thinking for a minute. Wouldn't it be more logical to assume that it's in response to their actual current largest competition (EQII & LotRO) instead of in response to their theoretically-possible-maybe-future largest competition (WAR)?
In reality, this is just a bunch of WAR fanboy nonsense. Yes, this is a "Keeping up with the Joneses" maneuver. But, it's not due to fear of any single competitor. It's just Blizzard catching up with a feature that has become an industry standard.
Breck Jul 17th 2008 7:07PM
Yeah, that was in response to a post below. I hate this commenting system.

anyone notice that one of the screens on the official page shows the hair salon and how you customize your haircut?

I like it in theory... but in practice I fear it will just be another way to brand people a N00b.
"Nice Arena rating! And what... No old skool achievements? Piss off Johnny-come-lately I've been playing this game since Original PRE-ALPHA. Yeah, when the Devs were imagining this game, it was ME they were imagining playing it."
UberNoober Jul 17th 2008 2:46PM
I actually think this is a really good idea. Sure there are going to be people mocking others for not having done certain acheivements, but people do that now for things like gear anyway, that is a fault of the community and not Blizzard.
If people want to mock people for not doing certain acheivements.. to hell with them. I think this looks like a great fun system to add more goals in the game and keep players interested, even if it is just silly things.
Say for example you get your character to that stage where you can't really progress them apart from raiding. Well, if you feel like playing WoW when it's not a raid night you could log on your char, and get some acheivements done for fun!
Frank Jul 17th 2008 2:48PM
Glad to see that Warhammer is already improving WoW. Too bad Blizzard waited so long to give us some new features like this.
Kazi Jul 17th 2008 2:51PM
I hope this doesn't turn into how future hero classes are made available to an account...ala SWG back in the day.
