I actually think this is a really good idea. Sure there are going to be people mocking others for not having done certain acheivements, but people do that now for things like gear anyway, that is a fault of the community and not Blizzard.
If people want to mock people for not doing certain acheivements.. to hell with them. I think this looks like a great fun system to add more goals in the game and keep players interested, even if it is just silly things.
Say for example you get your character to that stage where you can't really progress them apart from raiding. Well, if you feel like playing WoW when it's not a raid night you could log on your char, and get some acheivements done for fun!
