Breakfast Topic: Why is this hard?

Instead, I've just recently managed to get my draenei hunter, who I created back when TBC launched, to level twenty eight. In the time since I've created this character I leveled my original warrior to 70, created a new draenei warrior and leveled him to 70, and leveled a draenei shaman to 70, plus went back and leveled two horde (warrior and shaman) to 70 and created a BE paladin and got him to 65. I leveled a paladin to 65 faster than I could level a hunter to 28! What is this, bizarro world? My orc and night elf warriors both hit 70 and I created them more or less as alts to play with RL friends on different servers, which means they get played once a month at most, and yet, here is my hunter, a year into the expansion (over a year, in fact) and I am just now heading into the 30's. And to be honest the only reason I even cared enough to level him this much was because I wanted to get him a mount.
I guess part of it might be a fundamental disconnect with the ethos of the class: my warlock is in even poorer shape, I literally cannot force myself to log him on. It's physically painful for me to play a class that consists of sending in the pet and doing damage from behind it. I find myself standing and meleeing on my hunter, to the point where my wife has threatened to take him away from me if I don't start learning how to kite. Since she's one of our raiding hunters I think it's also painful for her to watch me play the class so poorly.
I've recently started at least dropping traps when I see a mob break away from my pet and charge me, and I've been practicing my jump shot and how to use concussive shot to keep mobs from running up to say hello, but half the time I still forget and start swinging my two hander as soon as they get in range. It might be that 90% of my other characters are melee oriented, or it might be that I have some kind of odd brain damage that doesn't let me remember what 'ranged DPS' means, I don't know, but I find leveling the hunter to be just slightly less painful than eating a broken beer bottle burrito. I spend more time gathering ore and learning new cooking recipes because I find the actual gameplay so antithetical to my nature.
So we move on to the topic of discussion: what class did you expect to easily master and didn't? Or are you a jack of all trades and can effortlessly move from class to class, even ones with wildly varying differences in playstyle? And if so, how? How?

I not only have one class I expected to master but failed miserably, but I have a second.
I started out, ages ago on vanilla WoW, with a paladin main (dwarven to be precise).I thought the idea of a stalwart defender of justice, taking damage for his friends and healing when need be would be fun. Well, I played him for quite a while (up until I quit for a while before BC came out), and managed to get him up to level 51 after only a few short years. Somewhere around level 40 I simply hit a huge stall, (the first 40 levels came in less than a year, the next 11 took another year). Something just didn't feel right. I don't know if it was the incessant melee, the fact that I was playing prot before they fixed the paladin class and thus actually ALLOWING pally tanks to be viable, but I ended up essentially abandoning the character. In the time since then, he's hit level 52, not an xp more.
The second attempt (during the lull with my paladin) was a Mage. I've always loved spell casters, from TT gaming to the video realms, I tend to always make some sort of magic user. I looked at the three major spellcasters and felt that neither the Priest nor the Warlock were appealing, so I made a human mage. She got all the way to level 22, before I left her in disgust. Unlike my paladin, I haven't even pulled her out of mothballs since then (though I haven't deleted her, for sentimental reasons, a reminder I suppose). I've made a few mages since then, giving it another shot, but none have made it to level 20. On that note, it was the terrible failure of both my expected "favorite" classes that drove me away from WoW.
To put all this in perspective, after the BC came out, I decided to give WoW one last chance. I waited a few months for the price of the expansion to go down and bought it last August (almost a year since I've been back). In that time, of about 11 months, I've leveled both a Shaman and a Warlock to lvl 70 and I have a priest that healthily into her 40s. I don't know why, but the classes that I started out with crashed and burned, to a level where I can help my SO with her paladin's gearing and such, but I can't touch them myself with a ten-foot pole, yet I can and have been successful with classes I originally discounted completely.

Sorry for the double post, didn't seem to recognize the submit button. Then it posted twice... >_

I have a bad case of alt-itis, must admit. Everybody says that leveling a shaman is so easy and all this...I cant get myself past the level 20 barrier on him. Low damage, a trigger happy fire totem that seems to attack mobs at random, and lack of any meaningful armor means you take lots of damage, and you depend on the same resource for dealing damage and healing yourself, and your damage is still less than any equal level class.
And I have level 70 paladins, warlock, and druid, so I dont know what the funk is with my shaman.

I play a hunter. It's the class I feel more confident with. She's 51 today. I'm a beginner and a casual in WoW and it's not easy for me to level fast.
My boyfriend and guildies just begun to do heroics and I can't wait doing that with them.
The fun is that I'm the exact opposite to you : the time is not far when I typed any random key of the keyboard when an ugly mob began to run at me, clicking frantically at it, nearly running out of the computer in panic...
As you undestood, I'm not a melee player...
But I wanted to try. And I created a little warrior. And I eventually found melee could be fun. And that helped me to stop panicking with my hunter...
I think trying different classes is interresting. It enables you to understand other gameplays, and makes you a better player of your favorite class, and a better groupmate.
But I also think you must not keep on running a class you have no fun with... WoW is a game, if you have no fun with your hunter, drop it. Leave it to your wife. It also make me sad when I find bad playing hunter...
If you want to dps, try the rogue. If you want to try a ranged dps, try one without pet : mage or shadow priest. Obviously, pet classes don't fit you...
Good game to you all

Yikes, sounds like somebody needs a nap!
Anyhoo, I'm having trouble with my shammy. I keep hearing stories about how others love their shammy and wouldn't ever switch. Quite possibly I'm geared wrong since I started her on a brand spankin' new server and have no money. She's level 25 and stuck in Hillsbrad. Which also might be a reason I'm not playing her. Don't care much for those quests.

Few things...
First, if you are soloing and trying to level as fast as you can, make sure you're BST spec. Helps a ton.
Second, do you have the whole "stable the pet to go learn new skills" thing down? A guildy of mine was not aware of that till about level 40 on their new Hunter. Made life very hard, which baffled me until I asked what claw/bite they had and found out it was rank 2 on both.
Third, learn the joy of "clipping through". Mob coming at you? Hit Raptor, run at them, and spam Wing as you pass through them. You'll hit the mob for a good bit of damage, snare them, and keep on going to get to range again. Turn, Concussive, kite, profit.
And lastly... chain killing. Once a mob is on your pet and at about 10%, send your pet after the next target. You shoot the 10% mob in the back as it chases after your pet, and your pet gets a head start on aggro with the next target. You can also tag the next mob with one auto shot to pull it out of a pack before sending the pet in, and then switch to the nearly dead previous target.
Hunters are easy to play, yes, but they are not easy to play *well*.

"Does the fact that I have been nominated for the British Society of Fantasy short fiction award this year hurt you any? Quite frankly, I'd laugh if it did."
This probably wasn't necessary, but it is kinda impressive.
Wait ... You're BRITISH?

(sidestepping the steaming piles that litter page 1 of the comments)
I think you hit it. You like melee classes. You don't so much like ranged/casters.
While I think it's admirable/useful to attempt roll every class and play them at least enough to understand what they contribute to a team (be it one with 2, 3, 5, 10, 25 or 40 members) and how your skills interact with theirs - I also don't think there's any point in forcing yourself to play a class you don't enjoy.
This is a GAME, after all and games are supposed to be fun.

Maybe I am a glutton for punishment but I love pallys. In the past 3 years I have had 4. However I cant get them past 40. I get bored and often leave the game for a while.
my hunter was a fast level when I first started playing but that was a while ago and the hunters close combat sucked (couldnt beat a mob at the same level unless you pulled ever tyrick in the book). I know hunters shouldnt be in close combat but this was for when the perverbial shit the fan.
I like locks too but havent had a chance to level one past 15 yet :(
I like Rossi like warriors and am currently leveling my second. My first is only 40 on a server with a friend but on a different serverwith a differnt friend I am leveling another. I love them and find them easy to level, or at least straight forward to level and tanking can be a rewarding challange.
Kothmia Jul 17th 2008 12:19PM
I can't do rogues... or hunters.... Druids seem to stall out around 30s-40s. Mages and pallies? YUM!
CyberThoth Jul 18th 2008 11:44AM
So it means that you like to play classes that hack things to pieces or smash them to a pulp. Ranged DPS class is just not for you. :) I like playing casteres, mele dps is not for me. We all can be happy.
Mirajj Jul 17th 2008 11:26AM
I find that I can level toons of any class without any problem...so long as I'm levelling WITH someone. If I try to level a toon, any toon by myself, it doesn't work. I just get too bored, too fast. So I have a multitude of alts, that are duo'ed with someone else's alt that we work on as the mood strikes us in between raids.
Ash Jul 17th 2008 11:31AM
My druid was the first toon I ever made...And i bailed on her at lvl 20 and rerolled a paladin. I lvled my paladin up to 70, have full BT tier 6 (all except for the darn mace) before I even looked at my druid again.
She is up to 65 now, and iv'e been asking questions and learning about the class from peeps in my guild which makes it a whole lot easier than trying to free ball it. I cant wait to get her to 68 and get my flight form. ^___^

I have always had massive trouble figuring out how to play a Mage. My main character, first to 70 - warlock...you'd think mage wasn't far off from that. I have the same issues as the rest with Hunters though - don't quite understand it.

"So we move on to the topic of discussion: what class did you expect to easily master and didn't? Or are you a jack of all trades and can effortlessly move from class to class, even ones with wildly varying differences in playstyle? And if so, how? How?"
I've taken one of each class up to at least 58. The key for me has been keybinding. When I start with a new class I try to associate their abilities with those of my priest (my main for 3 years). I place similar use abilities into the same locations on my bars on every character. Sometimes it's a stretch to remember, but it's become very easy for me.
I also read a lot. I spend a good portion of my play time on the forums or just talking to people on my server. If I see that a player is particularly knowledgable, I roll a level 1 alt on their server, then ask them very politely if they can chat for a few. I get some of the best information this way.
As for your hunter it could just be that you haven't found your style with him yet. Melee isn't an absolute no-no, but if you spend all of your time there, you'll be forever swinging away at mobs wondering why it takes them 10 minutes to die. The jump shot is absolutely essential, but jousting can also be fun. Run through your enemy and tag them with Wing Clip and keep on running, performing a jump shot if necessary as soon as you have some more distance.
If you really like to surprise people, you could twink out your hunter with some fast melee weapons, spec into savage strikes and get some fiery enchants. Again, just don't spend a lot of time in melee. Hunters just don't hit hard enough and their power melee moves are on long cooldowns or conditional.
Good luck with that hunter!
Rob Jul 17th 2008 11:58AM
The article is fine, quit QQing. Certainly appropriate as a blog post. Matt I feel your pain, sorta. Hunters are incredibly easy, you probably just like the challenge of getting smacked around alot. Hunters aren't for everyone, lord knows I'm not thrilled with it after 50 days /played. The love has gone until Wraith i think, when my beloved pig can tank once more (i hope).
zenpunk Jul 17th 2008 12:05PM
Maybe you're just learning the truth, just like that female blogger (sorry, her name escapes me atm) should who made the comment on the podcast about hunters just needing to L2Play.
Hunters are far from the 'easiest class' or the quickest to level. Especially on a PvP server where every class of the opposite faction that comes across you will rip you a new one and camp your corpse because you such a free, easy HK.
And as far as leveling speed goes, I leveled a druid and a priest too, and both were MUCH faster than my hunter (especially the druid... my god, probably takes half the time 1-70 as a hunter). In the levels before a new rank of growl kicks in you'll pull aggro from your pet with just autoshot. And if you think 'learning to kite' = faster leveling, well, give up your hunter now. Even meleeing mobs like you say you do, as dumb as that is, is probably faster xp than running away from them all the time.
Anyway, if you're on a PvP server, I predict you never reach 70 on that hunter anyway... after having it so easy pwning people with mortal strike and one or 2 more wacks you're not gonna like being on the other side of the axe, so to speak.

Not to jump in on all the trash talking, but this article did have a tinges of:
-Pet classes are easy.
-Easy is bad.
-Hard is good.
-Look at the hard classes I play.
I have a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to anything even resembling this kind of talk because I live in a city where people are very opinionated, but VERY passive-aggressive about it. Common comments such as this one abound. "Nice car, but I'm just one of those people who HAS to ride a bike." Oh? You're just one of "those" people. So like, I'm supposed to think that's bad, but wait! You totally surprised me by finishing that sentence with something positive! It's like you're self-depricating AND a snob. It's like you're pretending to be ashamed...that you're BETTER than me! I get it!
It's okay though. I'm just one of THOSE people that has to ride a bike...while eating a cruelty-free soy burger...and drinking free trade coffee...and saving puppies from oil companies.
Back OT. Keep leveling that hunter! Challenge yourself. Do some 3 mob pulls and learn to kite and trap and dps all at once! It is FUN when you get into it.
Peepintom Jul 17th 2008 12:37PM
What if I only pvp and I went to do that instance purely for that drop? How is that an offspec? Sorry folks. The hunter had the right to roll if he felt he needed it. Don't PUG if thats an issue.
Ragnarok Jul 17th 2008 12:08PM
@ Saif
your complaining that Rossi has a ton of free time...in fact too much of it, but youve probably spent the last 2 hours bitching about HIS free time. look at yourself. Youre not one to talk if you have 2 hours to complain about someone else.
