Breakfast Topic: Why is this hard?

Instead, I've just recently managed to get my draenei hunter, who I created back when TBC launched, to level twenty eight. In the time since I've created this character I leveled my original warrior to 70, created a new draenei warrior and leveled him to 70, and leveled a draenei shaman to 70, plus went back and leveled two horde (warrior and shaman) to 70 and created a BE paladin and got him to 65. I leveled a paladin to 65 faster than I could level a hunter to 28! What is this, bizarro world? My orc and night elf warriors both hit 70 and I created them more or less as alts to play with RL friends on different servers, which means they get played once a month at most, and yet, here is my hunter, a year into the expansion (over a year, in fact) and I am just now heading into the 30's. And to be honest the only reason I even cared enough to level him this much was because I wanted to get him a mount.
I guess part of it might be a fundamental disconnect with the ethos of the class: my warlock is in even poorer shape, I literally cannot force myself to log him on. It's physically painful for me to play a class that consists of sending in the pet and doing damage from behind it. I find myself standing and meleeing on my hunter, to the point where my wife has threatened to take him away from me if I don't start learning how to kite. Since she's one of our raiding hunters I think it's also painful for her to watch me play the class so poorly.
I've recently started at least dropping traps when I see a mob break away from my pet and charge me, and I've been practicing my jump shot and how to use concussive shot to keep mobs from running up to say hello, but half the time I still forget and start swinging my two hander as soon as they get in range. It might be that 90% of my other characters are melee oriented, or it might be that I have some kind of odd brain damage that doesn't let me remember what 'ranged DPS' means, I don't know, but I find leveling the hunter to be just slightly less painful than eating a broken beer bottle burrito. I spend more time gathering ore and learning new cooking recipes because I find the actual gameplay so antithetical to my nature.
So we move on to the topic of discussion: what class did you expect to easily master and didn't? Or are you a jack of all trades and can effortlessly move from class to class, even ones with wildly varying differences in playstyle? And if so, how? How?

I leveled a hunter to 70 without learning to kite... So to punish my self, I rolled a new hunter on a PVP server with the purpose of learning to kite.

Hey Matt, I just wanted to say I know exactly what your going through. Except, I did lvl mine to 60(Before TBC). I made him on the cho'gall server to play with my RL friends, and just never played him well. I couldn't DPS well, still can't kite, etc...Some classes are just not meant for you.
Its not b/c the class has a pet b/c I recently finished lvling a Orc warlock to 70, and that was tons of fun. So, I think its just the class and not you. You can't be enjoying all the classes!=(

I can't believe we've gotten this far without anyone mentioning the damage throttle. The classes you mentioned as easy to raise all gain levels by killing things as quickly as possibly, while the pet classes generally involve trying as hard as possible to not steal aggro from your pet (that is to say, hold off on killing it quickly to ensure survival).
In this case, the hunter will ease up a bit when you get feign death (wipe threat), and the warlock will get easier if you drain-tank (ignore threat).
I'm sure you're perfectly capable of keeping your threat low when you're in a raid (and not tanking), but "not killing things quickly" is an incredibly counter-intuitive way of getting things done when your goal is to kill things quickly and gain levels. It doesn't sit well with me, either.

I'm not complaining that the warrior column guy is writing about warriors. But when you also post about ***levelling five warriors to 70*** in other post categories and talk about it on the podcasts it's like hearing people at work who constantly talk about their kids.

Hey Matthew, have a look at my hunter leveling guides in Scattered Shots. Maybe that'll help keep the class interesting? At least have a look at the leveling guides, and let me know if they're not helping you get the hang of the class as you level, then give me your opinion as to how I could improve them.

I agree, once or twice OK, you leveled multiple melee characters to 70.
But every fucking post you make has to mention it. God damn, it is almost like as if every time I saw my friends, I would tell them, "Hey, I make this much money an hour." The first 1/2 times its alright. But then it gets to the obnoxious douchebaggery side.

This reply fails to have anything to do with my comment. In the future, please use caution when pressing buttons on web-pages, so as to cause minimum confusion to readers. Thank you.

My true pain has always been warriors, actually. I've gotten a number of classes into respectable levels (two 70s, a 67, and a 50), but I've rolled and abandoned about four warriors at this point. One I killed for RP purposes (I'm on an RP server), and it seemed like a good idea at the time (he was only level 25 at that point), but that seems to have cursed me: I've rolled warriors on horde and alliance, on PvP servers and PvE servers, and none have made it all that far.
I think the thing is, I'm spoiled: leveling a druid and a rogue is a LOT easier. Both are melee classes (leveled as feral), but both have stealth and some amazing DPS. Leveling the warrior just seemed to take forever. My warlock and shadowpriest are also very easy to level - dot, fear, run away, come back when they're dead. Warriors just have to keep pounding away at the mobs, with their anti-burst rage bars only getting good when you have the health, armor, and avoidance to deal with chain kills. Everybody else starts with a full mana/energy bar and can afford to bandage between mobs.

Actually, for me, it's the opposite of you.
I'm a caster. DPS ranged. Don't touch my cloth.
I have a 42 warrior who's been sitting around through two 70 mages, a 70 paladin and a priest and warlock who have both passed him.
The mages and the warlock kill like-level things in around 15-20 seconds. The warrior chugs along and maybe a minute later, a like-level mob goes down.
This is not either ego-satisfying or rewarding of fast experience. Instead, it's BORING. Read a book and let the warrior kill things.
I'll prolly level him eventually, but I'm pretty sure it won't be soon.
As a side note, the paladin was almost as bad, but he levelled up with a fire mage partner, so stuff went down in a hurry.

Hunter and Warlock. I'm finally getting used to the warlock now that I've given up on the idea of using a pet. I keep the imp out and drain tank or fear kite.

Despite the QQ, Tabard of the Hand FTW.

I have 2 70s (rogue and pally) but I have a level 50 hunter sitting stalled. I had her as a twink before, 29, 39 and 49 bgs. I love her to death but I cant for some reason level her.
I started my climb to the 59 bracket, so I could sit there and play in the bgs for a while but as soon as I made 50 i was like... completly stalled out. Like you say, almost a painful feeling just logging in on her.

@ everyone who I've read comments from time and time again tearing down the bloggers on this site. Whether it be the seemingly innocent "slow news day?" or the quite appalling verbal harassment at times...
This. is. a. blog.
Maybe you don't understand what that means.
This isn't CNN. The wowinsider team does a great job at relaying any and all wow news that may come up in the day, but all in all it's still a blog.
What this means is that there are many talented writers (such as Mr. Rossi here) and it is their job to provide reading material in an almost always enjoyable, usually informative way. I believe they do a great job of that.
I found this site about a year ago and I make sure to check it sometime each day, because it's fun to read and it's a great way to keep up with what's going on in wow.
If you don't enjoy reading, or if for some reason you really want to tear someone down, please, do us all a favor and stop coming to this site. You won't be missed.
This article was simply a look at Mr. Rossi's attempts at the hunter class, nothing more, nothing less.
I will admit that there are posts that we could go without on this site, but to be honest you don't have to read them. Every post is enjoyed by someone, and that's good enough for me.

I agree completely. I can't level a hunter, or any ranged DPS for that matter. It just doesn't feel real to me somehow. I'd rather heal even. But all my charries are melee + spells. And because of that I've only been able to level to 70 a paladin and an enhance shaman. Meanwhile I have a warrior at 50 and a rogue at 26 who are languishing (missing the 'spells' component apparently) :P
Solex Jul 17th 2008 2:05PM
Well for what its worth I'm with Rossi on this one, my main is a rogue and the only alts i have are a fury war and an enhancement shammy. I tried doing the lock thing and it's not really fun. If that's your thing then sweet but for others like myself sometimes you really just want to hit/smash/cleave/gore/pound/stabify something with some angry looking weapons. Its like that old Brand New t shirt "Because mics are for singing not swinging."
Wraithanne Aug 29th 2008 11:24AM
I've always had a hard time leveling Rogues for some reason. I think the highest I've ever gotten with one was 15, maybe.
The most painful experience for me however was getting my original Beta Paladin to 60....without talents or half of the final spells being established. I lost a bit of sanity on that one.
Ze qt draenei Jul 17th 2008 1:42PM
Aww now, that can't really be true with all these 70'es, WoW is easy... You can get 1-70 in 2-3 weeks with every class, just don't give up! That's the keyword for me when lvling some class I find evil. :P
Def Wolf Jul 17th 2008 1:42PM
I can't seem to be able to play anything but a rogue. The up in your face (or against your back!) and faster fighting is what I like. I even have a 62 shammie and many others but cannot get into the mindset to be able to even play them decently. I'm not a ganking sort either so it isn't that part hat draws me, lol.
Geoff Jul 17th 2008 1:44PM
For the life of me, I cannot level up rogues, priests, warlocks, druids or hunters. I just... can't. Hunters I can get to level 20 or so, before I get bored and stop. Rogues up to 30, and Priests I can barely get to 14, Warlock I got up to 42. Why is that? I just don't find them fun for some reason.
I actually quite enjoyed playing a hunter -before- level 10, when I was pet-less. I enjoyed doing spin-shots, jumping around, and kiting the mobs across the zone. Once I got the pet it became drudgery rather then a challenge.
My warlock was interesting, but mostly because of the engineering. I mostly used a succubus to tank, but that was waaay back in the day before the warlock patch where they got remade. Succubus was more useful on a pvp realm.
Priests I just found... really boring. They were like mages with none of the fun tricks.
Rogues... I was told that I'd make a great rogue. I got good reaction time and whatnot, and the class itself I love the idea of. But I can't level one. I always get bored at level 30. No idea why. I made 5 rogues, all of which got to level 30ish, then I deleted due to inactivity.
Druids: Mostly I just dislike the two races that can be druids. Sorry, don't like cows, don't like purple elves.

Back when I started playing about 2 years ago I tried a mage and created a hunter. I loved my mage and played my hunter here and there but the mage was the love of my life. my hunter sat at lvl 17 for almost a year i think until I decided to pick her up again and play. now that I gave it a shot and actually played her to 70 I really like the class and I enjoy it. Now... as far as melee goes? well i have a lvl 65 druid that is feral and even though i like it, i don't love it like i do ranged damage. its just a preference I have or maybe I just like the pure raw damage the characters can do. I am finding it hard to keep levelling said druid and even my little baby warrior and rogue that i got to 46 and stopped playing. it may not be that you can't play a hunter it may be more of a I can't get behind the idea of playing one as your preference is melee which is cool. either way you do what you enjoy and if melee is your thing go for it. to all the haters out there you made your point now just drop it.
