Forum post of the day: I need that for my PvP set
I'm sure at some point in time we've all seen epic looting nightmares. More than once I've been hoping for a drop in an instance only to have another party member beat me on a need roll. Usually, though it's something they actually do need, at least as much as I do. Sometimes ninja looting is even an accident, but other times it is not.
Avirisa of Mannoroth is a might miffed that she was outrolled for a Commendation of Kael'Thas ... to a Hunter... for PvP. As a tank, she said he was running the instance to acquire that drop. Most responded that this behavior is part of what gives Hunters a bad name in the game (Huntard). Some blamed the original poster for inviting not only a Hunter, but a Night Elf Hunter to the group.
Boxtor of Doomhammer sided with the Hunter since the stamina is good for PvP or even that the Hunter was probably of the impression that the original poster wanted it for PvP as well. Perhaps the Avirisa should have made her loot intentions clear at the beginning of a run. Gagger of Carine believe that looting in this manner is acceptable as loot conventions tend to be loose in pugs.
This one seems like a no-brainer to me. You've got a tank who has been running the instance for a tanking item. It seems that player should get first dibs. The immediate needs of the players in their roles in the group takes precedence over gearing extraneous sets. I think that blaming the player's Race or Class is irrelevant. There are ninjas of every race and class.
Have you ever lost out on an item in this way?

I'm a warlock who lost Quag's Eye to a Holy Priest because he thought it could proc of heals.

I'm a mage in exactly the same situation!

I feel you. On MGT I was healing and the epic healing ring dropped. I new to 70 warlock rolled need on it because he saw it did damage. I almost lost it.

In the world of PVE, anything that drops that people claim they want to use for PvP should be relegated to the "off-spec" category and always take a backseat to people who are using it for PVE for their main spec.
Montas Jul 17th 2008 7:16AM
agree
Milktub Jul 17th 2008 10:22AM
Agree.
When I was just leveling my tank warrior, I ended up with Terokk's Nightmace (+25 Stamina, some Expertise, decent speed) dropping on my first run through Setthek Halls. The rogue in the group insisted that it was a rogue weapon. I beat his need roll by 1.
But yes, people should be respectful of main/off set needs and not need for offset unless no one is needing for main set. And PvP is offset.
Ikarus Jul 17th 2008 5:49PM
hmm..not sure i agree. People do PvP to get gear for PvE, which is their main focus. Can't it be the other way around? for a lot of people PvP is the endgame. Blizz has made it clear that they view this as a totally viable option. I wasn't able to read the original post (Damn internet filter at work). The trinket mentioned would be an excellent PvP trinket for a Hunter, rogue, war or pally.
I would guess that the same people who disagree with the hunter getting the trinket would also feel that PvP is unimportant/ not a viable end game option

i was on my Enhancement Shaman. and I lost the roll of the Shard of Contempt to a healing paladin... 'I want to go ret' the other person rolling for it was a prot warrior which i could understand.. but.. Holy.. Paladin...
Worst part is, he's my guilds main raids 'paladin class leader'... which men't i couldnt complain about him being a loot whore...
Horixon Jul 17th 2008 9:47AM
Same thing almost happened to me on my rogue. A prot warrior outrolled me on the SoC and I had to bribe him not to loot it. He said he was going to spec Arms after the run, but he had spent the whole run talking about getting the tanking trinket. He was just angry it didn't drop.

I've learned to not expect other players (in pugs) to be altruistic in their looting behavior over the years. Sometimes you can avoid problems by agreeing beforehand on a set policy. Other times if the majority of the group feels strongly one way, "that's a tank item", then the dissenter will fall in step with the rest. While I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the hunter rolling need, it's certainly not something I would have done in his position. If I were in the tanks place I'd be disappointed too but temper that with my "it's a pug, it's a pug" chant. And as someone who often plays a healer I've been through a few runs where a dps caster wanted or "needed" the +heal item since the +damage modifiers were introduced.

Assuming you're the group leader (which as the tank you usually should be) turn lootmaster on... simple
grofer Jul 17th 2008 5:56AM
Someone on a PuG turning on masterlooter means I leave as it reeks of an upcoming ninja to me.
Krianna Jul 17th 2008 1:07PM
I've had too many folks use lootmaster to ninja--no way would I trust a PUG that had that.
Anteia Jul 17th 2008 5:45PM
I only turn on master loot when it comes to heroic Setthek. The reason is simple.. I'm normally running with a mage in my group who will pay off anyone who won. The master loot is merely to give the person the chance to decide if they want the mount.. or the nigh on 3k the mage is willing to offer them if they get it. But we would never be unethical and keep the mount just because. And we turn it on and off only for that specific boss, with the explanation. I would be suspicious if a pug did so without explanation for the entire instance.
Fables Jul 17th 2008 3:27AM
The hunter helped complete the instance and so has every right to roll on that item. Too bad for the tank that his rolling skills were not good enough.
I was a feral druid in shadowlabs only running it for the lifebloom idol, and I told the group that. We had a resto druid healing and he wanted the idol for pvp too aswell as I did. I won the roll he got really pissed off and left the group, arguing with me that I was feral and did not deserve roll at all. All I could do was say that I wanted it before we got the group together, and laugh in his face that I won the idol.
Sonmerlong Jul 17th 2008 8:24AM
"laugh in his face"
Yes, very mature of you.
I can already tell the quality of your character.
Whats your in game characters name? So that i may avoid you.
Chuddy Jul 17th 2008 9:16AM
Attitudes like this is what is by far the lowest point of the multiplayer part of this game. It reminds me of the kids on xboxlive that start talkin' crap on you because they had more kills or you killed them too many times. In 20 years when you are long done with this game the only thing that will remain is your crappy actions towards other people, not your silly lifebloom idol, or commendation of kael. Laugh in his face (computer face?) as you hold it, using the character that blizzard owns. Please. Do you realize how foolish you sound?
Daimon Jul 17th 2008 10:30AM
you have the same ninja behavior as the Huntard in the post.
Now, the specific case that a hunter took the item for pvp just reflex the poor pvp skills he has, 1st because that item was nerfed for pvp purposes, 2nd because they are pvp trinkets better than that attainable only by pvp (go pvp your asses off, leave pve alone) and that item has Prot warr/pally-feral druid written all over.
Nevertheless, if your class can use an item for a 2nd spec (hybrid, not huntard) you must say it before hand and roll. I have a former resto druid now moonkin, and is a pain to get group for anything in my server, so i have to respec to resto to get to any group, but i always state i'm rolling for caster gear if I nneed it. But taking something w pve stats meant for other class for pvp is just ninjaing.

This.
Master Looter before any bossfight in a pug. Period.
