WoW Rookie: Keyboard shortcuts
WoW Rookie is brought to our readers to help our newest players get acclimated to the game. Make sure you send a note to WoW Insider if you have suggestions for what new players need to know.
Accept this fact: to be good at playing WoW, you need to learn to use your keyboard at least some of the time. You don't have to bail on your mouse, but it's very helpful to learn some of the very basic keyboard shortcuts that will make your life in the game that much easier. (Easy is good, right?)
Using the game interface
There are hotkeys for almost everything you do in-game. You can find most of them by just hovering your mouse over the icons that you click -- as no doubt you may have already noticed. Let's start with the button bar that you use to bring up your Quest Log, Spellbook and other things. You'll see that when I hover my mouse over the gold cup icon, a tooltip pops up. The L in parentheses after "Quest Log" means you can just press your L key to bring up the log instead of clicking the icon. (Don't worry that it's a capital L, just press lower-case L. When a keyboard command is capitalized, it's written as "Shift-L".) After the break, you'll see a list of keyboard shortcuts for the game interface.
Getting around
I'll confess that I only started learning the keyboard commands for character movement a short time ago. They are still not completely natural for me, but at level 70 when you mostly play PvP, you really NEED to be very fast. For many people, keyboard shortcuts are the best way to speed up your reaction times. A lesson from one who has gone before you: I really wish I had learned to use the movement keys before I hit 70. You have thus been warned.
Now let's talk about strafing. Strafing means moving in one direction while looking or attacking in another direction. Strafing is an important WoW skill.
Here's a video that will show you what strafing looks like if you can't picture it in your head.
How do you place your hand on the keyboard when you're using it for movement? A very good question, my friend.
Right now, I'm using the setup I described in the second bullet point, but it still fights me sometimes because my mouse and key hands don't want to cooperate with each other. You'll need to experiment to find out what works best for you.
Targeting and combat
Even if you insist on using your mouse for movement, you need to learn to target monsters and friendlies with your keyboard because sometimes what you want to hit you can't even see to click with your mouse. Also, it's a good idea, especially in hairy instances, to all be pounding on the same monster at the same time, so you want to be able to quickly find out what your tank is hitting so that you can hit it too.
Here's a video showing you the difference between Tab and Ctrl-Tab.
If you're grouped with a party, you can also use the function keys to target members of your party. If you look on the left side of your screen, you'll see all the party members. From top to bottom, including yourself at the top, you can use F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5 to select one of your group members. (F1 is always you, even if you're not the party leader, because you're always at the top of the list.)
So now you can get around and kill things simply by using your keyboard! Of course, there is more keyboard goodness in the form of slash commands, macros and key bindings, but that's the topic for another lesson. Enjoy practicing your new keyboard skills and go get 'em!

How do you place your hand on the keyboard when you're using it for movement? A very good question, my friend.
- If you took a keyboarding class (or typing class, old skool), your left pinky is on the A and your index finger is on the F. If you keep your hand here, it's going to feel really weird learning how to move with the keyboard because you'll be using your two weakest fingers most of the time.
- If you shift your finger placement to the left one key -- so that the pinky is off the letters and your ring finger is now on the A, your index finger will be on the D. A little more comfortable, right? Some people will stop there, leaving their right hand for the occasional mouse action. (Feels like playing piano.)
- Others prefer to move the left hand off the letters and use the right hand on the movement keys, which puts your right index finger on the A key. Then you use your left hand for mashing other keys you've bound, like the numbers or function keys.
- You can also move your hand up a row, using teh QWE keys as your "home" row.
Right now, I'm using the setup I described in the second bullet point, but it still fights me sometimes because my mouse and key hands don't want to cooperate with each other. You'll need to experiment to find out what works best for you.Targeting and combat

Holy shit. Ctrl-Tab cycles through allies.
I've needed that so much.
I think i'm gonna re bind that to tab for allies and ctrl tab for enemies on my priest (holy >.

I've been playing the game for 3 years, so its a big suprise to me, lol

I can't heal by tabbing through allies, too many key strokes to get to the end of the line. A well-configured Healbot is all I need for now, though I suspect that I might need grid + clique once I start on larger raids - I'm still just a 65 on my main.
Charlie Jul 17th 2008 11:00AM
I use grid atm and I love it, but id love to be able to tab for 5 mans.

LOL... glad you found it helpful, Charlie!

Who is this article aimed for? I'm all for helping people *really* new to the game and new to gaming in general... but a video of strafing? that seems like way way overkill. I mean, we have to assume the readers of this blog actually own the game or are playing with someone else's account... If they want to see what strafing looks like or what ctrl-tab does... they could just do it in game.
This article is basically a wordy version of the little cheat sheet that comes with the game.

Having your fingers on the AWD keys is much better than what you described. you can move forward and easily switch between forward strafing and back strafing.
I never understood why keys are bound further than 7, I've got quite large fingers and can only just reach 6.
Rassia Jul 17th 2008 3:36AM
Is it... buh.
Is it me, or is this article *advocating* keyboard turning?
And.... telling someone new to the game to tab target? That's going to lead to a deadmines wipe when your mage tab targets something on the second level of the boat that's technically in range and in LOS.
Maybe my perspective is too instance/raid skewed, but this seems all wrong.
(People move their left hand off of asdf? REALLY?)

what is the i for abilities?
i'm pretty sure that's the lfg button

Using keys is paramount to effective gameplay. Clicking onscreen icons will only get you so far. The same for using the Left/Right mouse click for moving instead of using WASD and strafing..
That being said..
Using the keyboard will also only get you so far.
The next step up is a game controller, like the Belkin N52te. Dpad movement combined with mouse steering blows WASDQE out of the water. Throw in 15 configurable buttons and its own scrollwheel, and now you can throw insta-casts while moving. It's hard to cast abilities on actionbutton2 or 3 while holding down W. With the N52, all movement is on your thumb, and your 4 fingers are free for casting. Add in shifting modes, and you can easily control 4 actionbars (48 abilities) with just 4 fingers, without moving your hand.

Best thing I've ever bought. I don't think I'd be playing the game at this point without it.
The one I purchased was the Saitek Pro Game Command Unit.

I'm thinking this is a good example of left-handed being better off. I've never had a problem doing anything with the keyboard at all... I use my right hand on the arrow keys on the right side of the keyboard, and my left hand is free to hit the entire range of keys on the left.
I use my right thumb to hit the Ctrl, Shift, and Alt keys and pop up my 2ndary action bars, and I bind jump to the \ key, right above enter, easily clickable by my right index finger while moving, turning, whatever.
All in all it works very well... which is good since 90% of the decent mice out there are ergonomic right-handed :)

I never did get the hang of using WASD...even back in my Counter-Strike days, I just rebound my movement and strafing to my arrow keys and used the mouse for steering. When I started WoW I did the same thing. Then my brother bought me the Fang as a xmas gift and that thing is great. The n52te looks pretty cool, but a little too bulky for me. I have my Fang and mouse on my keyboard tray when I am playing and its flat enough to slide under when I go AFK for whatever reason.

*clap* ....WOW.... I am at a lost for words, this video is about as useful as this article. I bet WI cannot wait for Wotlk to drop for new material. I remember a time when I enjoyed reading WI and the articles were great, now it seems you are scraping the bottom for anything that sounds like a story. If you are taking request it would be nice to see more lore stuff leading into Wotlk, those are usually good.
Natalie Mootz Jul 17th 2008 11:42AM
Hey, Datone, thanks so much for the sarcasm! As I'm sure you're aware, there's a sarcasm shortage everywhere on the internet and you deigning to share some with us is really very special. Also, since the game and this blog is ALL about you and your friends and couldn't possibly be looking for new readers or to help new players that aren't QUITE up to your level of skill in sarcasm, we really do appreciate your help. Keep up the good work!
Datone Jul 17th 2008 12:13PM
Anything to help, also to the shortage of sarcasm on the internet I highly doubt there is any...oh wait I see what you did there...you helped to add to those numbers. Also I do not believe I ever mentioned anything about the blog being for me or my friends and seeing how they don't read this blog anymore. Could be how criticism is looked down upon on WI "blogs" instead of accepted and corrected. But either way keep up the good work and give the other great writers my best...damn there I go again with my level of sarcasm I tell you it is just so hard to control.

Natalie's comment crits Datone the noob for 10k!

I use the Logitech MX Revolution Mouse
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=12134
The thumb scroll wheel is spring mounted so you can flick it forward or backward. It works great for changing action bars on the fly. Best mouse I have ever used, hands down.

Another keyboard shortcut any class with a combat pet should know is Shift+F1. This targets your pet. While in a party, Shift+F2 though Shift+F5 will target that party member's pet.

Hehe ... Sorry, Natalie, I just found this amusing.
Good article, though!
