Gems in Wrath
The crafting professions may not yet be implemented in the Wrath of the Lich King beta, but we do get to see their mats. I'm not sure how much we can figure out from them. I do, however, really like some of the names, especially for the gems.
It looks like we'll have the same gem system as in BC, with six colors (three primary and three secondary) and one uncommon and one rare gem for each Epic gems have, understandably, not been unveiled yet, and common gems have made no appearance. Here are the names we have:
- Red:
- Blue:
- Yellow:
- Purple:
- Green:
- Orange:

I am very interested in what the gems will be like as a Jewelcrafter. JC was the frist crafting skill i actually enjoyed and felt very useful all throughout the current expansion. I hope they throw in some surprises in WotLK to spice things up though.
Maybe more actual Jewelty recipes perhaps that don't suck or are just resistance pieces?

I'm looking forward to jewelcrafting but at the same time don't want it forced on us as much as it was in Burning Crusade; yes, it had to catch up with the rest, but certain factions had nothing but jewelcrafting recipies... -.-

Although highly unlikely that this would make it into WotLK, my hope for JC is that there would only be three basic colors of gems (each with one stat) and that you could combine any two different colors together to create two gems with half the stats of both.
So basically, instead of actually cutting a +defense/+stamina gem, you would just combine a +defense gem with a +stamina gem and create 2 +defense/+stamina gems that way.
It would drastically cut down on the number of designs a crafter would need to know, at the same time hugely open up the number of possible stats on green, purple and orange gems.

Yeah, that would be a nice thing to be able to do. Hell, we can turn several tiny stacks of common gems into one blue or epic gem, so why not be able to combine two gems? Technically, they already have it there with the mixed colored gems, all they'd have to do is let us make them from two cut gems. I hate seeing so many recipees on the AH that are 400+, and seeing several recipees instead of several pages, feels alot less of a burden to me.
Also, I hope they bring back the statues from the pre-BC era of Jewelcrafting, it was cool having a small rock golem throwing a decent channeled heal on me. Hell, let us gem them so they'd have an added effect or something instead of the plain Heal-over-time.

oh, and fist weapons would be nice. We get a recipee for a plain fist weapon early on, but thats it, no epic craftable fists? If we can make a pair of knuckles once, I'm sure we can do an epic version. Besides, fist weapons are hard to come by, and no one else can make them.

I haven't seen any green gems from mining nodes in a long time, only from prospecting the stacks of ore (even after the last patch). Hopefully they will fix it so they come up a little more often

Green gem drops were removed from mining nodes in a previous patch, but were restored in the most recent, 2.4.3, patch.

Heck, if we can make rings, why not make a series of them to make a brass knuckle :P

There's already a JC fist weapon, just not very high level...

Maybe I'm weird, but I just like seeing the new names for things. I was interested to read about all of the new ore/jewel/herb types and their appearance.
Also, while I'm here, I'm going to give a +1 approval to that "combine two gems" idea posted above.

The sheer number of cuts listed on the wowhead beta site has me concerned. After dropping well over 10k to learn all of the rare outland cuts, it seems like there are at least twice as many cuts possible. Maybe they'll increase the droprate of the designs...
Variety is good, though-- just as long as us JCs have a semi-reasonable way of learning them. They should still be rare, but collecting them all shouldn't be totally ridiculous either.

see my comments on inscription. From what I'm guessing, it might make those patterns easier to get.
Braundo Jul 18th 2008 2:58PM
Agreed. My new main has just recently taken up jewelcrafting, but the prospect of collecting that many rare recipes (which, if it's like TBC, will all cost quite a lot) has me a little scared, haha.
bmiller Jul 18th 2008 2:10PM
There will be fewer gem recipes in Wrath because of unified spellpower, crit and hit. That should make it easier on crafters and clients.

Looks like all those JC receipes learned on Quel'danas are gonna be moot if the commons and rares from Northrend are as good or better than current epics. Means I blew a ton of gp on my JC for bupkus.
Live and learn I guess.
