Inscription insights from the beta
While every class is getting new talents and spells in Wrath, there are three big, brand-new additions to the game: Death Knights, Northrend, and the new profession: Inscription. We've known for a little while that the general gist of Inscription would be to add effects to spells you already have, like a knockback to your fireball - basically enchantments for your skills.
Now that the beta has gone up, we have a few actual examples of inscriptions and what they might need, though so far we still aren't seeing any inscriptions that add to spell effects. Inscriptions evidently require various kinds of ink, which will be made from herbs by a skill called Milling, which destroys five herbs to create ink (very like jewelcrafting's Prospecting). Parchment will also be required to create scrolls, although the items it's made from are not yet implemented. And what could this Mysterious Tarot be? Maybe just a high-level parchment, given that it requires the same reagents, only more of them? There's another skill called Decipher that "allows the deciphering of tomes, books, and scrolls," though what that might mean I"m not entirely sure.
We do know that people who have inscription (scribes? inscribers? inscriptors?) will be able to create scrolls, such as the stat scrolls we all know and love to vendor, as well as something intriguing called Scroll of Recall. Hearthstone scroll, anyone? At least I really, really hope that's what it is. I miss SoR from my MUDding days.
Possibly the most mysterious part of what we can see so far of Inscription is Glyph Mastery: "Unlocks an additional Glyph." Um, what? I have two guesses: it might let you make longer inscriptions (if inscriptions are multi-Glyph strings, like Diablo II rune words), or it might let you put extra inscriptions on the spells of yourself and others (if each inscription is a Glyph). I suppose we'll just have to wait and see; here's hoping it doesn't take them that long to implement Inscription.
I know many of you will be curious what, exaclty, people are going to need for Inscription, so you can get started stockpiling it now and make a killing when the expansion hits (hat tip to clueless_noob). So far, all I can tell you is that Peacebloom, Silverleaf, and Earthroot appear to be used in the beginning inks; it's a fair guess that some higher-level herbs will get used later on as well. So I'd say hold on to those low-level herbs – I know I will be, instead of vendoring them like I usually do.

Mysterious Tarot is obviously connected to the deck-based trinkets (currently only available through the Darkmoon Faire). Perhaps these decks will be the basis of BOP or BOP trinkets.

the glyphs are the spell/cosmetic modifiers, 6 per char
so inscribers can put an extra one on themselves! which is neat

It would be fitting irony if one of the best inscriptions against Arthas is made by Arthas' Tears.
Lab Monkey Jul 18th 2008 12:55PM
That wouldn't be "ironic" at all as there's no disparity between the implied and actual meanings. If it was called "Arthas' Triumph" then it would be ironic.

Any word yet on what types of inscriptions will exist? I'm willing to take it on faith that the herbs and parchments or whatever will exist and be available to anyone willing to spend a modicum of gold on it, but I want to know how this will impact my game.
If I get knockback on fireballs, will it be strong enough and consistent enough for me to keep one enemy at bay while I kill it? Will pyroblast have a larger alternative, letting me throw people over cliffs?

They gave some references to backstab and what not. They seemed to be tier 1 or 2 talent like effects, meta gem effects at best at the mundane.
Pyro would likely be more burn and more +fire dmg stacking, if there was a stun bonus you might go for that.

I'd take a guess that the Mysterious Tarot is the device used to inscribe. Pen, paper, ink. It's the pen. Much like enchanter's have rods, and engi's have a hammer, wrench, and screwdriver.
Steve Jul 18th 2008 1:12PM
Going by "tarot" as in a "tarot deck", that would be one heck of a strange pen

Better start farming "Elegant Writing Tools".

If they don't use Skinning as a part of making parchmnts or vellum for inscribing I will be very upset.

I'm guessing Decipher is a way to learn some Inscriptions. Get a couple Scrolls of Stamina, study them and destroy them in the process. Maybe you'll learn something; maybe you'll fail.

"We do know that people who have inscription (scribes? inscribers? inscriptors?) will be able to create scrolls..."
I nominate people who take up inscription be referred to as "Scriveners". I also have the name BARTLEBY parked on my server.

This is great!
My Tauren Druid main has been thinking of dropping
herbalism/alchemy in favor of skinning/leatherworking
-- now I can keep herbs and pick up Inscription!
Todd Jul 18th 2008 1:56PM
Same here except for the ever thinking about skinning/leather part.
Alchemy is just such a waste on a feral druid.
Brimoonfang Jul 18th 2008 2:57PM
True.
She was my first MMO character ever -- what did I know? I saw Taurens had racial bonus to Herbalism
so I took it. And what goes better with herbs
than Alchemy?

deciphering
You learn from premade scrolls. ie you buy a scroll of Agility III, decipher it (if you have the skill for it) and now you know that inscription.
Maybe one could decipher an engineering schematic or leatherworking pattern if that is your other profession.
The consequense of this would be a big split between gatherers and crafters. An engineer/scribe would need a ton of money for all of the ore, herbs, etc.
Steve Jul 18th 2008 1:28PM
I can't really see this coming into use for other professions, since it only applies to "scrolls, books, and tomes"...
For an eng/insc, using decipher on a schematic would seem rather... superfluous? Since, by the wording, you won't be able to use it on any engineering-created items
bmiller Jul 18th 2008 1:40PM
You wouldn't use the inscription on the schematic, you'd use your deciphering talent to read a schematic and make copies of it.
I'm basing this speculation on the comments from WWI that said they wanted profession recipies and patterns to become more easily available, so that you didn't have to grind a dungeon many times to get that LW pattern.
A guild like SK gaming could go in to a top end instance and get one of the first drops of an enchanting recipie, their enchanter/inscriber would learn the scribe for it, and sell it on the AH.
No one would bother to do a rep based pattern/recipie because ppl can just buy it.
Steve Jul 18th 2008 1:52PM
Such a mechanic seems like it would be rather contrary to the reasoning of having BoP patterns for professions. Certainly, efforts may be made to make patterns more accessible, but I don't think we've seen the last of BoP patterns that drop from dungeons/raids, after all, if an insc could just copy them, they would still have to grind the dungeon for the drop, and at that point, why bother making the pattern BoP?
The same applies to rep patterns; having insc able to duplicate them would only remove the grind for some people, but any insc that wanted to duplicate it would still have to do the same grind, so it wouldn't really be achieving the goal that they wanted, it would just hide the fact that the grind was still there from the majority of players who may just buy the pattern off the AH.
Assuming that these drop patterns were BoP still, it would also raise a small issue of changing the pattern drop mechanic, as currently patterns can only be looted by characters with the corresponding profession. (Not to mention insc "ninja'ing" patterns from players with the appropriate profession to use a pattern; just because they could make a copy for the other player when they won the drop, doesn't mean that they would)
I think that placing the ability to replicate every pattern in the hands of one profession would just make it too powerful, too profitable.
bmiller Jul 18th 2008 2:10PM
There would need to be no changes to the drop mechanics because one toon wouldn't be able to decipher all patterns, recipies, etc, just the ones they have the appropriate profession for. They're already an Engineer or tailor.
The benefit for an SK-Gaming is that they could sell the patterns to cover the costs of raiding, enchants, inscriptions. It would be very expensive to skill up Enginering and Inscription because there'd be no source for mats. You would need the support of a guild to take on such an endeavor.
Also, I'm picturing that deciphering would be a specialization like dragonscale LW or Primal Mooncloth tailoring so not all "inscribers"would be able to do it.
