Wrath of the Lich King maps
Wrath of the Lich King information is really flooding in. For the latest bit, let's take a look at some of the new maps in the game. These were obtained through a variety of sources and are 100% real, all right from the beta. Click through our gallery to see them all – including nice high res versions. You'll notice three maps missing - The Storm Peaks, Icecrown Glacier, and Dalaran. Those maps are not done yet. There are some composites that other sites have put together via the mini-map from the data files, but they're neither finished nor "normal" maps.
I like the Stormwind Harbor one the best, if only because the Stormwind map hasn't changed in all these years and it's odd to suddenly see it different. The one I enjoy the least is the Borean Tundra, the color scheme doesn't sit well with me. It looks like...well...I'll let you all draw your own conclusions.
Enjoy the maps! And stay tuned to WoW Insider all weekend, we've got some great content lined up for you.

Um... where's the Isle of Quel'danas?
Adam Holisky Jul 19th 2008 2:52AM
That's actually an old map - released around BlizzCon time last year. I must have uploaded the wrong one. Correcting.
Thanks,
Adam.

phew you had me worried there. I thought my precious gold mine was going to be taken away.

Two comments, first, the font used for the "Stormwind Harbor" text is wrong compared to the rest of the text in the other maps, so hopefully they fix that. Second, there's a "Nesingwary Base Camp" in Sholazer Basin, fun genocidal times ahead!

The two things I find most interesting - Quel'danas is gone (though this isn't really surprising), and...

Notice the difference? And I don't mean the minor details added to the continents themselves, I mean the islands.
Enaress Jul 19th 2008 2:49AM
I doubt that overworld map of the 3 continents is real. It's missing the extended version of Silithus compared to the current map. Also there seem to be an extension off the Eastern Kingdoms continent near the K in Kingdoms which is unexplained. The area near Stonetalon is extended on the current map on Azeroth. And of course the obvious lack of Isle of Quel'Danas on the new map. Unless they are removing all this content in WotLK, I still stand by the claim of a fake map.
Joshua Ochs Jul 19th 2008 3:35AM
I don't know, I think it fits quite well. If it was designed before patch 2.4, then Quel'Danas would not be shown. The extension on the Eastern Kingdoms is for Stormwind Harbor - something that I don't think had been announced when that map came out, but has since been revealed. As for that chunk of Silithus, good riddance - I don't *want* to see more silithid content...
Overall, not too unlikely. Of course, we can fairly easily confirm that now, right?
Enaress Jul 19th 2008 3:40AM
@ Josh
The extension on Eastern Kingdoms is not the Harbor. The harbor does not extend that far out into the ocean, heck it doesn't extend at all, it's straight north of SW where there used to be just mountains. And regarding the "lack of Silithus", why would they remove AQ20/AQ40 when there are achievements for it? And there is still the question of the islands that are dissapearing/appearing around the world.
One thing I forgot to mention is the shape of Northrend on the overworld map is not the same as the shape of it in the beta as well.
Enaress Jul 19th 2008 2:52AM
Forgot to mention the islands north of Tifisfal Glades, and the lack of the islands northwest of Eastern Kingdoms and the addition of 2 near STV.
Neocene Jul 19th 2008 3:27AM
In the map of Stormwind, it looks like there is going to be future extensions to the city. The upper left hand portion of the map looks incomplete. I wouldn't mind seeing some suburbs or towns out there that feed into the city.
Neocene Jul 19th 2008 3:38AM
actually when overlaying both maps on top of each other there are several geological parts that are missing from the northrend map. The new daily island is missings, the 4 isles of Sargaras, and also Silithius is missing as well.
Awahanee Jul 19th 2008 3:41AM
Anyone notice the extension east of Light's Hope Chapel and Tyr's Stand? Is this gonna be the Horde launch point or a new instance area?
Enaress Jul 19th 2008 3:42AM
Death Knight starting area.
Kobh Jul 19th 2008 3:52AM
No I think that is just the DK 'starter' area
Tasty Jul 19th 2008 4:34AM
That is where the deathknights start.
They learn talents, mount and get their gear from there

Wotlkwiki has posted an updated world map:

That has all the right shapes, although I'm surprised by the size and location of Northrend.. I mean, Quel'Danas is further north than most of the continent. I'll imagine it's just an artistic impression of the world.
Khass Jul 19th 2008 6:44AM
Anybody notice the top-right floating city on the Northrend map? I wonder what that could be ...
Camaris Jul 19th 2008 7:08AM
That's Dalaran. It's floating over Dragonblight I think.
Khass Jul 19th 2008 4:35PM
Ah, thank you!
Zoidberg Jul 19th 2008 7:58AM
Did they change SW so that it'd be possible to fly through it? Are the buildings on the horizon still billboards, or are they actual 3D objects, now?
That might give us an indication about whether or not we'll eventually be able to fly in the old world.
