Dire Maul is what remains of Eldre'Thalas, the former capital city where Azshara and the Highborne lived. After the Sundering it was partially destroyed, with the remaining three districts today being the ruins of Dire Maul.

The ogres originally came to Azeroth with the first Horde, led in secret by Gul'dan and the Shadow Council, and more prominently by Blackhand the Destroyer as the first Warchief. For reference, Thrall was born in 2 ADP (After the Dark Portal) and spent ~15 years growing up in Durnholde Keep as Aedelas Blackmoore's slave.
