@Drae, In the book Warcraft: Lord of the Clans, it is revealed that Drek'Thar has connected with the Spirit of the Wilds (one of the five shaman Spirits, Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Wild). The Spirit of the Wild sent the wolves (originally white ones) to aid the exiled clan in their harsh new lands in the Alterac Mountains. The relationship is inherently symbiotic, reflecting the general outlook of Shamans. Being that Thrall is the Chieftain of the Frostwolves prior to taking up the mantle (well armor and hammer) of Warchief from Doomhammer he has incorporated this aspect into the culture of the new Horde. Also, as stated in Lord of the Clans, Thrall is the first shaman to be accepted by the spirits in a long time, as revealed to us by Drek'Thar himself.
