Professional benefits in Wrath
Thanks to the information slowly (we just can't get them fast enough around here...) leaking out from the Wrath of the Lich King Beta, we already learned that the professions trend started in The Burning Crusade will continue in the new expansion. The Burning Crusade (or Patch 2.0) introduced new items or enchantments that confer bonuses exclusively the character with the profession, such as ring enchants for Enchanters or Bind-on-Pickup gems for Jewelcrafters. This was a welcome change that rewarded players with their choice of profession -- almost to the point where such profession-only bonuses compelled many to choose professions somewhat incongruous with their class. Hardcore PvP players pursued Enchanting for the ring enchants, for example, while hardcore raiders leveled their Leatherworking for the Drums of Battle. In Wrath of the Lich King, the different professions get even more exclusive goodies designed to keep professions more or less in tune with their intended classes. Eliah reported about the passive buffs for gatherers, and they seem to be in thematically tuned to some classes. Take Master of Anatomy, for example, which seems to be a benefit given to Skinners. Traditionally, Rogues, Hunters, and Shamans were the classes who pursued Leatherworking and its complementary profession, Skinning. The passive benefit to critical strikes are certainly welcome to those classes, so players who chose to stick to their Skinning will actually receive a pleasant boost in Wrath.
Then there are the new BoP wands for Enchanting, which Eliah also discussed, reaffirming Enchanting as the profession of choice for cloth-wearing classes. While the wands might not be better than some raid loot, the change rewards clothies who didn't drop Enchanting for Leatherworking. It benefits the casual players the most, allowing them to create arguably good items in preparation for raids. Blizzard continues to encourage choosing professions that are natural extensions of your class (and not like, say, a Priest taking up Blacksmithing).I'm looking forward to what other BoP or profession-exclusive items or spells there are. It certainly adds some flavor to the game, and gives further incentive to players to actually level their professions. Providing benefits to gathering skills is a commendable idea, as well. Those tanks who stuck to Mining (for their Blacksmithing, presumably) should be pretty happy with the 35 Stamina bonus from Toughness. If Alex is right, Engineers might even be scooting around in BoP hogs in Northrend. My Stormherald served me well for such a long time that I'm pretty stoked to find out to its equivalent in Wrath. You can learn more about Wrath's BoP goodness over at MMO Champion's extensive professions galleries.

I found this interesting:
"[Crazy Alchemist's Potion]
Requires: 70
Requires Alchemy (400)
Use: Causes a random effect, which may or may not be helpful."
There's no mention of any healing or mana-restoring effects.

*sigh*... as awesome as it is to get a bop wand for my enchanting, raiding warlock, that level 80 wand that (inexplicably) uses void crystals is approximately equal to the Wand of the Forgotten Star from Solarian in a level 70 mid-tier raid instance. Considering this enchanter's wand is like 1000g I can't see why it wouldn't be at least level 80 quality. Color me disappointed :(
Then again I'm somewhat more hardcore and like you said, that would be a sweet wand for getting into Naxx with. It's just not the FROZEN SHADOW-WIN set of level 70.

I don't think those are the actual stats, tbh. Those are just likely placeholder items just to see how the mechanic works. Notice how each upgraded wand seems nearly identical. I'm sure the actual item will be more impressive.

I'm fairly certain the wand off Solarian isn't 280 DPS.
sephirah Jul 20th 2008 7:55PM
Level 80 epic, 30 spell power.
Well, I guess the stats of items won't skyrocket in WotLK after all...
Krianna Jul 20th 2008 11:51PM
Depends on what 1 "spellpower" translates into.

I'm a bit confused as why a level 80 xpac recipe would use materials readily available now. I don't see level 70 recipes using Brilliant Shards.

Seeing that the Enchanting BoP will be wands has made me drop it on my paladin, and pick it up on my priest.

I really hope that Engineering gets some love the opposite way - some cool things that can make money. Maybe armor kit-type items, or a more "standard" mount that can be sold and used by anyone, or something like that.
Mora Jul 20th 2008 8:25PM
wonder what happens with people who have both skinning and mining? do they get the crit buff and the stam buff?
Varshak Jul 20th 2008 8:57PM
I would guess they would - that's a pretty good combo for a PvP focused character right there... but of course they won't get access to the BoP created items from other professions like Smithing or Leatherworking. Whether this is worthwhile or not remains to be seen.

My main in WOTLK is going to be my elemental shaman (I'm sick of warriors). Anyways his professions are herbalism and alchemy. I would like to see Blizzard giving us something to be worthwhile other than the guy that makes flasks in the guild.
I was thinking they should have some herbs be bop. Heres an example.
Dragons Icy Breath (>_

Dragons Icy Breath >_<
(Bind on pickup)
Increase spell power by XX and spell haste by XX
Lasts for 30min. Persists through death.
It would be great, just like enchanters ring enchants or the BOP uncut gems.
Aaron Jul 20th 2008 9:26PM
A wand with critical strike rating, lol
Robert Jul 21st 2008 10:59AM
yes because spells crit right? Crit rating works for spells and melee now. Do some research before posting.
Calaana Jul 20th 2008 9:31PM
You forget that come wrath, crit rating is going to affect both spell and physical crits.
Calaana Jul 20th 2008 9:35PM
Well once again the reply to function fails me.. the above comment is to Aaron.
Returning to topic though, here's a nice little spell from the wiki site...
Resurgent Healing Potion
Healing Potion: Restores 2000 to 3000 health. The potion will refill itself every 2 min.
Appears to only have a 10 second cooldown too, but I don't quite buy that part just yet.
DirtyPriest Jul 20th 2008 10:03PM
Seems to just pigeon hole everyone into certain professions. Whatever happened to using professions to make money? Oh yeah Blizzard just gave up on that idea. What about professions that don't benefit any particular class? Engineering and Alchemy? They gave us that trinket that made you get more health/mana out of pots, but they should make that passive or something. Lame that you trade a trinket slot for it unlike say enchanters who get ring enchants and don't have to sacrifice anything and its a pure bonus.
Eisengel Jul 23rd 2008 6:26AM
Rogues should be levelling Leatherworking? Why? After you clear level 40-ish there is 0 for you in Leatherworking, including that epicly-lame Cobrastrike stuff. As the professions stand now I think the most useful Rogue professions are Alchemy for the buffs or Engineering for the Gizmos.
If you're a Hunter or Shammy Leatherworking could be nice with all that Mail armor (wait, isn't Mail metal... so why is it in Leatherworking? hrm...), even your Druid tank might want to pick it up for the Clefthoof set (even though it is BoE)... but a Rogue?

I want to know a couple things about professions: What blacksmiths will be able to put sockets into and how expensive they will be, whether there are certain things you can only socket for yourself, what kind of awesome stuff engineering will get, and if they're going to nerf tailoring. I guess I'll just have to wait until all the profession data is available.
