More JC info from the beta
Last time we met to talk about Jewelcrafting in Wrath, I only knew the names of the various uncommon and rare gems. Now I have the names of the epic gems too, as well as values for the cuts. The epics are called:
- Red: Cardinal Ruby
- Yellow: King's Amber
- Blue: Majestic Zircon
- Purple: Dreadstone
- Orange: Flawless Ametrine
- Green: Eye of Zul
As far as the cuts go, it looks like uncommon Wrath gems are a step up from epic BC gems, which surprises me a bit – I was expecting them to be on par. I guess just about everything in Northrend is better than everything in Outland, which shouldn't be too surprising. The numbers go as follows (for basic stat gems like +strength; other gems scale similarly):
- BC:
- Uncommon: +6 (Bold Blood Garnet)
- Rare: +8 (Bold Living Ruby)
- Epic: +10 (Bold Crimson Spinel)
- Wrath
- Uncommon: +12 (Bold Bloodstone)
- Rare: +16 (Bold Scarlet Ruby)
- Epic: +20 (Bold Cardinal Ruby)
Pretty straightforward, I guess. The jumps between quality levels are twice as big in Wrath as in BC, which makes some sense due to stat inflation. It also addresses concerns that BC's epic gems are too expensive for too little added benefit.

I think the new gems are quite sexy, even if the green ones will resocket all my hard earned epic cuts.

Its always nice to source your photos. I can see the watermark but thats not the same.
I think people will be regeming their sunwell gear until level 77 it looks like.

Oops, I meant to link the image to MMO-C as is our usual policy for such situations; oversight on my part. Fixed.

I'm disappointed they didn't move around some of the associated stat colors. Talasites and the rest of the green colored gems are going to plague gemcutters for the rest of time.

Honestly, Def/Stam cuts are pretty nice (Green) and so are int/stam cuts (also Green). You just need to find the utility for different classes and dare not to roll in pure one-color stat buildouts.

@K Whitt
You are clearly not a JC then. My heart sinks every time a green gem emerges from my Brilliant Glass.

"My heart sinks every time a green gem emerges from my Adamantite Ore."
Fixed. If you're still making brilliant glass you're throwing away money.
Also, while talasite isn't worth much, it's mostly because there aren't a lot of good stat combinations offered on them in BC. A lot of the yellow stats are represented, but they're usually improperly paired with stats. If there was Int + Spirit, druids would eat them up. The real problem is that Blue gems have nothing besides stamina. With the 'buff' that spirit is getting in the exp, green gems could go through the roof if they have a ton of combinations which include spirit (of which they have none right now).
I think the boost to spirit could singlehandedly fix the mulligan that green gems are right now.

@Ryuno
Ok point 1, I think you'll find that "making Brilliant Glass looses you money" is very dependent on server economies.
Point 2, I never buy the mats to make Brilliant Glass. I make it with the bi-products of prospected gems that do not yield blue gems. The product of those Brilliant Glass (even given a fair bit of bad luck with Green gems) is still more valuable than selling the uncommon gems raw or cut.
I do however agree that better stat balancing on Green gems could help alleviate this problem.

The Stamina gems in Wrath are 18/24/30. There is a BoP JC-only prismatic gem that is +45 stamina as well :)
Glad I rolled a JC now.

hey quick question, anyone know if superior recipes are gonna be world drops again? I really hope not, they were way too expensive if you tried to get all of them, so i hope they added them for vendors, cause that will make being able to cut gems easier.
Fletch Jul 22nd 2008 8:12PM
On the one hand designs being available at vendors would alleviate the high prices seen on the AH, though I think such easy availability could lead to the market becoming saturated with cut gems, thus making it more difficult to make any real profit from Jewelcrafting
Jack Spicer Jul 23rd 2008 4:28AM
I would rather have cuts be world drops and sold freely on the auction house (even for huge sums of money), than have them drop off bosses inside instances.
Try talking to an enchanter or a blacksmith that has run crypts thousands of times for their rare recipes. I'm sure that they would have payed twice the price of any of the rare gem cut designs if it meant they didn't have to find a group for those instances again.

Awesome. As a pally tank. Def + Stam is hard to get, WotLK is gonna be elite
Kadamon Jul 22nd 2008 8:38PM
Speaking of professions, and kinda being off topic...
I noticed today my Mining skill didn't require a specific level to advance to the next rank...I didn't seem to check the others...but, can anyone else check in on that? Maybe I'm just crazy...
Jack Spicer Jul 23rd 2008 4:29AM
None of the gathering professions have level requirements. You're not crazy, but its pretty impossible to mine Adamantite as a level 10 toon.
Odok Jul 23rd 2008 2:00AM
Expertise gems are very nice...
...if tanks weren't pigeonholed into stacking stamina in every slot.
sigh.

I have a ? Does this mean that all my gems i have sitting in the bank are going to be worthless, when the new gems come out? What about all the epic designs, and blue designs i paid big gold for? I mean dang i spent 700g for that teardrop living ruby design. That would suck if those are going to be worthless.
