Mounts and small pets will take no bag space in Wrath
Come Wrath, mounts and vanity pets will be learned as spells, CM Wryxian has just announced. The items that currently summon pets/mounts, like Sprite Darter Egg or Ashes of Al'ar, will serve to teach us the spells, at which point the item will disappear from your inventory and the spells will be found in your spellbook for all time (bindable to hotkeys like any other spell if you want).
This should make collectors very happy: collect all you can now, and they won't take any space whatsoever once you learn them. Be sure to check out WarcraftPets for help on how to find them (that site's creator was recently honored with an in-game NPC). And everyone will gain at least two more inventory slots that are currently devoted to their ground and flying mounts (except people whose mounts are already summonable, i.e. paladins, warlocks, and druids). Excellent move, Blizz; this is even better than the vanity pet bags people have been asking for.

I assume that mounts will cost zero mana to summon. Will the Paladin/Warlock/DKnight mounts be changed to have no mana cost as well then? :)
Doffencrag Jul 22nd 2008 1:14PM
I'd guess no, and that they'd still cost mana.
But it seems like they're really trying to make people happy with WotLK, so I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the mana costs completely. :)

Well, the Deathknight mount is free to cast (since Runic Power is like Rage, and it doesn't cost any runes) so it wouldn't surprise me if they dropped the mana cost for Paladins and Warlocks.

100 Mana isn't a big deal. It'd be nice if they dropped it, but I won't go off on a crusade to get it removed if they don't.

I have said it before and I will say it again:
I am not understating things when I say that this is my favorite new feature in WotLK/3.0 now. Not only will this free up so many bank and bag spaces, but I'll be able to use random pets and mounts in the field so much more freely without giving up tons of bag space.

No kidding. All that time and effort to get Exalted with all five Alliance races - and now I have nine mounts sitting in the bank, along with a Small Silk Pack filled with vanity pets.
I just hope they make mounts and vanity pets a new tab on the spellbook, so General doesn't get too cluttered.

I'm really not sure what I'll do with all my bag space though. 70 free spaces! Plus even more from mounts. Thank the heavens. I would have been happy with Vanity Pet bags...but 70+ free spaces...amazing.

This is neat. I wish they'd add an extra bag space for say those that require a bag to hold items that are required for play. I was in Nagrand last night and a hunter was talking about how one of his bag spaces was taken up by his quiver. I have a lock and completely understand. My bags are all 16 slot, and now that I'm topping off 69 and and have various pots, quest items for group quests I haven't been able to complete it doesn't leave much room for other things.

As a hunter, I'm on board with this wish!! I'm constantly runnng out of bag space because of my ammo bag taking up a bag space!

That is so awesome! I've never been a big pet collector, but I am obsessive about other things (enchant recipes, quests, reputation). Changing pets to learnable spells means I'm totally going to go back and get as many as possible!

"And everyone will gain at least two more bag slots that are currently devoted to their ground and flying mounts"
/confused
Are we getting more bag slots? In our bank or on the char? Or are you just assuming everyone is like you and has two bag slots in their bank devoted to mounts and non-combat pets?
Across 3 level 70 characters, I have less than 5 non-combat pets total. Not everyone hordes them.
Eliah Hecht Jul 22nd 2008 1:16PM
I meant 2 inventory slots in your bag, not slots for 2 more bags. Will reword.
Doffencrag Jul 22nd 2008 1:18PM
Bag slots, meaning slots *in* the bags. Not bag slots meaning slots for bags in the bank and character.
Giving up the items for flying mount and land mount frees up two slots in your bags is all he's trying to say.
Raaliya Jul 22nd 2008 1:21PM
The poster is assuming that most 70s carry 1 ground mount and 1 flying mount...if these both become spells and you no longer have to carry them, you will have two additional slots in your bags.
Alcanarias Jul 22nd 2008 1:23PM
"Come Wrath, mounts and vanity pets will be learned as spells" and the two bag spaces refers to at the very least a ground and flying mount which (I mean come on he's not assuming everyone is like him, practically every 70 has those two spaces for flight and ground mounts!) will be learnt as spells from now on. Saving space for things other than pets and stuff.
Now what I want to know, is will the turning of vanity pets into spells be optional? I've still got a Mechanical Squirrel I made on my main years ago and I still want to keep the box...

I'm guessing from the article that you have to click on the item to turn it into a spell. So you can choose not to click on your box (but you won't get your summonable squirrel pet). Unless you build or buy another one (one to learn, one to keep).

As a mount and non-combat pet collector this is an awesome change. Thanks Blizzard!
Jack Jul 22nd 2008 2:00PM
No kidding! ~45 newly emptied bag/bank spaces and the ability to carry around all my pets and mounts at once? It's Christmas in July!
KramerTheWeird Jul 22nd 2008 1:21PM
Personally I would have preferred a pet-vanity bag. I play a shaman and warlock as my main characters, and especially with the shaman my hotbars simply don't have any space for superfluous and non-essential macros or hotkeys for items like pets. It would work best in their current design if there was a separate tab for the pets.
rogue Jul 22nd 2008 1:24PM
So leave them in your Spellbook and just open it up to cast when you want them. Rather than opening up your inventory like you do now. Pretty simple.
