The cd-key is only entered on the website to activate the account; it's not in the registry or any other aspect of the install. This is must have been an "in house" hack by someone the user knows and not one from a remote gold farmer. Additionally the information required to hack the account couldn't be obtained by someone remotely. This is a failure on the users part I'm afraid.
