Taking a look at Runeforging

Death Knights have a class-specific profession called Runeforging, similar to the Rogue-specific Poisons and to a lesser degree, Lockpicking. However, unlike Rogue poisons, Runeforging a weapon supercedes weapon enchantments. Inscribing Runes onto the Death Knight's weapon also requires a Rune Forge, kind of like a Moonwell for making Mooncloth or a Forge for smelting metals. Currently, Rune Forges can only be found in Ebon Hold, the Death Knights' exclusive clubhouse.
There are currently six runes available for Death Knights to inscribe into their weapons -- Rune of Cinderglacier, Rune of Frostfever, Rune of Lichbane, Rune of Spellbreaking, Rune of Swordbreaking, and Rune of the Fallen Crusader. Some runes mimic existing enchantments, such as Crusader, while others seem very task-specific such as Spellbreaking for taking on caster-type mobs. Death Knights can change the rune on their weapon as often as they like, provided they have access to a Rune Forge. Inscribing weapons with runes also endow the weapon with an animation similar to enchants (Swordbreaking looks like Savagery, for example). Check out the gallery for screenshots of the Rune Forge and the different runes.

By "supercede" I assume you mean wipes out? In which case:
- Yay, no weapon enchant costs for DKs
Or
- Boo, our DPS will be lower
Which is right?

Tobias,
A Death Knight can have only one permanent enchantment (e.g. "Fiery Weapon" or "Rune of Frostfever") and one temporary enchantment (e.g. "Sharpened Weapon" or "Major Wizard Oil") on his/her weapon at any time.
I agree; initially, this sounds like a bad thing, as Runes have to compete, in a way, with other enchantments that could be applied. However, if and when you've seen these Runes in action, you will *definitely* not regret having made the choice of a Rune. Trust me on this.

Before I forget: Yes, our (Death Knights') Enchants are essentially free, as all that is required to procure a new or swapped Rune is a trip to a Rune Forge (which is readily available at Ebon Hold).

Great news Badger. Is there any cost involved for runeforging at the moment?
Badger Jul 28th 2008 10:50AM
Tobias,
At the moment, no, there is no cost for Runeforging that has been implemented (aside from being restricted to Death Knights, of course, which is a cost in itself if you really think about it).
However, the UI for Runeforging is not even fully implemented yet, and we haven't seen all of the neat Runes that will be available before the Release version. So, this could change. (Personally, though, from seeing how well it works as a class-specific ability, I highly doubt it will.)

I believe WotLKWiki had a screenshot of a Dalaran runeforge as well.
Gendou Jul 28th 2008 10:00AM
I've wondered if that's a runeforge. It may also be a special forge for Blacksmiths, along the lines of the Alchemy Lab or Mana Loom required for Alchemists or Tailors.

I've been to Dalaran, but I haven't seen one. And I doubt there will be, as DKs have easy access to EH.

"I've been to Dalaran, but I haven't seen one. And I doubt there will be, as DKs have easy access to EH."
We do indeed. Death Knights are provided with a spell called "Death Gate," which tears open a portal in time and space that goes directly to the Deployment level of Acherus (a.k.a. Ebon Hold). Rune Forges are available on the Garrison level.

From what I understand these are supposed to be sttonger than typical weapon enchants as well. Notice all are proc based except the parry and spell dmg reduction. So no +Strength passive enchant for DK, no AP enchant.
Frank Jul 28th 2008 10:09AM
Free weapon enchants too? I guess Blizz really wants people playing DKs.
Joker Jul 28th 2008 1:21PM
Except the potential downside here is that DKs have no real way to use new enchants, it also probably means that there will be no DK enchanters at launch.
grofer Jul 28th 2008 10:20AM
As much as DKs feel epic the other classes feel bland in comparison.
Kyane Jul 28th 2008 10:32AM
They are free for now, much like respecs are 1 copper. What will the reagents be go live? Maybe still free, maybe not?
Ichthus Jul 28th 2008 10:38AM
The thing I'm curious about is do Death Knights have to have their blades enchanted in the rune forge in order to be used or is this a nice little secondary thing?
Badger Jul 28th 2008 10:55AM
Icthus,
Death Knights are not required to apply Runes at a Rune Forge before using their weapons. They can use their weapons without any Runes at all. The Rune Forge merely gives them an alternative (and a nice one, at that) to using "traditional" Enchants.
Milktub Jul 28th 2008 10:42AM
The more I hear about DKs, the less I'm interested in them. Maybe I'm weird, but I don't like magic interfering with my melee.
Badger Jul 28th 2008 10:55AM
It's all a matter of opinion.
I'm curious, though: Does this mean you don't use "traditional" Enchants on your Melee weapons? Runes available at a Rune Forge are almost no different; they're merely designed to cater more specifically to the effectiveness of the class that uses them.
DirtyPriest Jul 28th 2008 11:05AM
What the heck did you think they were in the first place? O.o
Deacon Jul 28th 2008 2:53PM
Actually, this is where it excites me. I have a couple of melee classes b/c I prefer smashing faces up close, but my Enhancement Shaman is my favorite. I love using spells and melee together. I think DKs might be my favorite class.
