Devilsaurs tamable on Wrath servers, Chimeras may be next
As of the latest build, Beast Mastery, the 51 point Hunter talent in the tree of the same name that lets you tame "exotic" pets, remains unimplemented. However, it looks a sneak preview of the talent may have snuck into the patch all the same: Devilsaurs are now tamable!
The devilsaurs do shrink quite a bit, but are huge all the same -- I'd estimate the one I tamed was at least three times as tall as my dwarven hunter after taming. They also make a satisfying stomping sound as they run around behind you. They use the Ferocity talent tree (minus Charge for some reason), and eat meat.
They come with all the basic pet skills, use Bite for their focus dump, and have an extra family skill called Monstrous Bite. Monstrous Bite looks slightly unfinished, as there's only one rank, and it only hits for 4-6 damage. It's not completely bad though: It also has a buff on hit that increases the Devilsaur's damage done by 5% and stacks 3 times (It should be noted that Monstrous Bite's tooltip currently claims it boosts AP instead). In addition, the buff makes the devilsaur larger.
It should be noted too that Wowhead now lists chimeras as a pet category, complete with a family ability called Froststorm Breath. However, I could not personally tame the chimeras in Winterspring or Azshara.
[Thanks for the tip, Homelessbird!]

51 point talent makes it so you can get more talent points for your pets then Marks or Survival hunters, it has nothing to do with taming the Devilsaurs. That just so happens to be a sweet new deal for hunters!

Not according to the Blues. It's more than just points.
"The developers are currently working on the exotic pet talent. Exotic pets are exactly that, exotic and not the average run of the mill pet. But whether this name will stick or not, is uncertain at this point. But these will be a range of new pets with unique abilities, that only those with the talent will be able to tame and train."
SpaceDog Jul 29th 2008 1:10PM
It's assumed that devilsaurs will be classified as exotic pets as per the 51 point talent description.
The talent is not yet implemented but I expect this will be changed so that you need the talent to tame one.

So do this mean that if you respec you lose your pet, or they are no longer available?
Or do you just have to spec BM to tame the pet and then they are yours? This would make it kind of pointless...
MisterMoose Jul 29th 2008 1:32PM
I'd assume without the 51 point talent, you couldn't call your pet, but you'd still keep him otherwise. That allows shifting your spec around some without making the exotic pets available to everyone for 100 gold.
SpaceDog Jul 29th 2008 1:39PM
The most recent blue word is that you just wouldn't be able to call them without the talent point, but you wouldn't lose them completely.

Called it!

Maybe you're limited to only taming Chimeras from Northrend.
Did you also try in the Thousand Needles? There's a big nest full of them there.
Raaj Jul 29th 2008 1:17PM
I don't remember any Chimera nests in Thousand Needles. Maybe you're thinking of the wyvern perch?
There's also a few floating around in Shadowmoon Valley if I recall correctly.

Stonetalon mounts has them, just south of the Night elf base noone goes to. :-) Right?

"Stonetalon mounts has them, just south of the Night elf base noone goes to. :-) Right?"
There's a Night Elf base in Stonetalon?!?! :O
Lol... yeah. There are some in the Charred Vale.

"Maybe you're thinking of the wyvern perch?"
Yep, that's what I'm thinking of.
They use the same model as Chimeras, though, don't they? Maybe that's why I got confused.
Bunkai Jul 29th 2008 3:59PM
There are some in BE too... just outside the Thunderspine (or whatever it is) camp.
Ancalimon Jul 30th 2008 12:34AM
@ Raaj. I hope its not just northrend Chimeras. i like the look of the winterspring ones the most. all of my pets are a white colouring, kinda a snow-like theme. don't want to change it up now. but hopefully the northrend ones are the same wintery types if it is only northrend available. although, the devilsaurs are in azeroth, so prob not

XxTheMessiahxX Jul 29th 2008 1:05PM
holy crap makes me kinda wanna roll a hunter to lvl 80 to tame some really cool pets. ;) imagine having a huge dinosaur running around in arenas and bgs lol
Aurigo Jul 29th 2008 1:08PM
I've always wanted to tame a wildkin :)
Imogynn Jul 29th 2008 1:08PM
Now get a bunny!
Galladon Jul 29th 2008 1:25PM
yes! level 80 bunny!
Akussa Jul 29th 2008 1:08PM
I can see it now. Day one of WOTLK release and 100+ hunters are piled up in Un'Goro fighting over the Devilsaurs as they spawn. The alliance kill them to tick off the horde, the horde kill them to tick off the alliance and all hell ends up breaking loose over this cool looking pet.
Just don't forget the Devilsaur that stomps around in Netherstorm. :D
