New Blacksmithing patterns from the Beta
Elizabeth Harper was able to snap a few screenshots of the new Blacksmithing patterns from the game last night. The items all require at least level 75 and are of superior quality. That's good news for those that are looking to craft gear as they level – which can be a viable alternative to fill in certain missing pieces. You can browse through all the latest patterns below in our gallery. For a quick analysis however, take the piece that is featured in the right hand image of this article. They're tank legplates that have 1661 armor, 57 strength, 84 stamina, and 55 defense. No sockets or anything else like that. Let's compare it to the T6 warrior legs, which have 24 agility, 78 stamina, a red socket, 40 def, 41 parry, and 32 block value.
If you socket the T6 legs with a +15 stam gem, you bring your total stamina up to 92, excluding any sort of enchantment. That means the T6 legs provide 80 more health. The T6 legs also win in the parry and block value stats.
Some people will tell you that agility isn't a very good stat to have on a warrior tank – and I generally agree. I'd rather have strength for the extra AP. The level 75 blue legs win in the 57 strength vs. 24 agility stats.
Finally, the defense rating is mostly a bust – the T6 legs provide 40, and the level 75 blue legs provide 55. While 15 defense may be important to a warrior tank depending on their gearing choices, it probably isn't. There are times where stacking defense is a good idea, but in general it's not needed once you hit the cap.
In the end, the T6 legs are still the better choice here. However we can clearly see that at level 75, items are going to become available that at least approach their greatness.

To be honest, I'm a little irked that there is no dodge or parry rating on these lvling up tank gear. I've been planning on rolling a Death Knight for tanking and from everything I've been reading, DK tanking is just not up to par in the mitigation or the threat departments.
I was hoping there would be some decent Black Smith tanking sets for when a DK entered Northrend.
I guess there is still hope that they will be looking at both problems in Beta.

DK's get parry rating from Strength.

While sunwell/bt gear may have better stats, it completely lacks str/atk power at all for the threat changes in wrath so may have to replace our gear sooner than other classes to stay ahead on tps

Well, wasn't str going to provide more blockvalue than it does now? afaik it'll be 1 bv for 2 str, also you'd get 114attackpower, which might be needed to build enough threat(especially while puging...)

Hmm, suprised that t6 is getting sidegrade at level 75, i was expecting t6 to be good until naxx (or at least 80)
Of course this is just one peices out of thousands, could be off by a large margin. And on top of that its beta.
Thanks for the update though.

The T6 legs aren't even close to as good as this crafted gear. Check out the new threat requirements for prot warrior tanking in WotLK. If you hop into even L70 dungeons in your current STA-stacked gear, you'll be putting out pitiful numbers. Warriors have to stack STR/AP as well now.
Which is why some warriors have started grinding PvP gear; it's currently the best STR/STA/mitigation gear for hopping out the gates at 70...

Oh, and don't forget that 540 will be the new 490 (defense crit immunity) because we're adding 10 levels.

"There are times where stacking defense is a good idea, but in general it's not needed once you hit the cap"
But remember that the cap is higher at level 75 than at level 70. If you still are wearing your TBC epics, chances are that you have dropped below the cap when hitting 75. The additional defense on the blue ones will come in quite handy I think.

Felsteel Whisper Knives? Aren't those a current BS Pattern?

Felsteel whisper knivs are already in game.

Why does the gallery include Felsteel Whisper Knives? :)
Boobah Jul 29th 2008 8:25AM
The two things that stood out the most for me: First off, one of those screenies was for Felsteel Whisper Knives, which we've been able to make for quite some time.
The second, and for more interesting thing: an honest to goodness crafted shield. About time.
Qyn Jul 29th 2008 9:40AM
There's been a craftable shield in game for awhile, it just wasn't that great.

Indeed, that shield can be seen as the second best tanking shield in the game now. It is weaker than [Bulwark of Azzinoth] on mitigation, but it is close enough and surely beats it for threat gen. A clear T6 sidegrade from a profession at lvl 75!
dpoyesac Jul 29th 2008 8:29AM
I might be wrong, but I don't remember any Blacksmith being able to make shields before.
Wait a sec... yep... A quick perusal of Wowhead shows that there are only two crafted shields in the game, and one is made by engineering. Ability to craft shields, and full set of crafteble tanking armor -- sounds like BS is getting a serious buff to overall usefulness.
