Death Knights have it pretty good. Old school players will remember the pain of collecting our dungeon sets, such as the
Shaman's The Elements or the
Paladin's Lightforge Armor. These weren't class-specific armor sets, but for a long time they certainly represented the best of how some classes looked. Completing these armor sets were a real pain, with key pieces dropping off the end bosses of what were then the hardest dungeons in the game. Head pieces dropped off
Darkmaster Gandling in Scholomance, leg armor dropped from
Baron Rivendare in Stratholme, and the chestpiece from
General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire.
In
Wrath of the Lich King, Death Knights won't be hoping for drops from bosses. They won't need to. If Wrath breaks as planned, Death Knights will be getting upgrades in every slot before they even reach Level 60 -- through quests. This includes a full complement of absolutely badass armor that isn't really an Item Set but a visually matched assortment of blue (literally and item level-wise) gear. I think I'll dub it the Deathplate Armor. Check out the gallery for a look at all the quest swag Death Knights get through questing.

Holy Cow! That is an amazing set of Armor. Certainly hope I get lucky in this next wave of invites!
Braundo Jul 30th 2008 9:18PM
Wait, Lightforge? The best that paladins looked? I think that screenshot on Wowhead's Lightforge page sums it up pretty well :)

The words, "Go! Go! Power Rangers!" come to mind.
Vlatch Jul 30th 2008 6:19PM
wow, that is one badass looking set.
Caustik Jul 30th 2008 6:27PM
And a few level later they will happily switch their set for a more clown-alike flashy pink&green from BC.
Hurray :/
(unless the skin of items are modified if worn by a DK?)

@Caustik
True to a point, esp when you compare the shoulders to, say, the Jade Warrior Pauldrons. OTOH, the quest plate, unlike the cloth, doesn't look half bad. It certainly isn't pink, although you may have some red/blue and then those big green shoulders. That always looked odd to me.

"And a few level later they will happily switch their set for a more clown-alike flashy pink&green from BC."
I dunno where *YOU* have been gathering loot, but if I could, I would keep this gear all the way to L68, then head for Northrend. Hell, I probably WILL.
Caustik Jul 31st 2008 3:57AM
The pink part was a bit ironic, I was mainly refering to what happen to clothes wearers who look at best like jesters during their leveling in Outland.
But ok, let's admit you could keep these a long time enough to reach Northrend :
- where is the fun of upgrading your gear through leveling? Go-go 10 levels of brainless grinding?
- will Northrend offer a new DK set via questing?
I'm wondering how Blizzard would keep the DK "brand recognition" without some kind of reskining of the quest/drop.

This looks amazing. I just hope we won't have to replace it to quick... I rather have this be lvl 80 gear then some blue gear we get rid of in a few levels...
jay Jul 30th 2008 6:35PM
Yeah, I hope that the skins of some items from quest rewards actually do change when worn by a DK, it's just going to look stupid having 3 plate wearing classes running around with identical armor pieces, I know this would be a mission to implement, but not impossible. Besides, adding new armor pieces to select quest rewards specifically for the DK in each zone would actually make the experience of repeating Outland (and in some cases for people, for the 4th time) less boring.
berwyn-cenarius Jul 30th 2008 6:36PM
looks nice, and lots of +hit before 70 = yay.
Osiris Jul 30th 2008 6:39PM
looks nice...but stats are...meh,
looks like this is the 55-70 gear for those guys.
Does look cool though!
Ichigo Jul 30th 2008 6:46PM
The quest rewards look amazing for pre-70 questing gear. Looks like the devs have taken their time with these quests and rewards.
WTB a Beta invite on Friday, kthxbye.
Todd Jul 30th 2008 6:43PM
I feel sorry for any new players who are just hitting the Outlands when the expansion hits. Imagine being a fresh lvl 58 warrior with maybe a few blues from dungeons but mostly random green drops and here comes the DK with full blues and the need to gank somebody with their new leet skills!
theRaptor Jul 30th 2008 11:24PM
And how is that different from T2/3 people ganking newbies in greens, like we had when BC first hit. Or 70's ganking newbies in greens like we get now?
Don't want to die, don't roll PVP.
Zarkharaan Jul 30th 2008 6:59PM
My death knight is never, ever vendoring that set. Ever.
Yeah, just like every other death knight on any (especially RP) server. But it's just so damn good.
By the way, I'm two levels from 68 on my beta DK and I've only traded in the shoulders for Ramparts quest reward ones, got new trinkets and a new weapon. All the remaining plate from quests (and I mean like 90%) is goddamn paladin plate. So it's indeed a set that'll largely last to Northrend - and if you're really stubborn, you can most likely go through 55-68 without swapping a piece.
Brownjohn Jul 30th 2008 8:07PM
Shouldn't a lot of the paladin plate be re-itemized? I thought the devs said that tankadins and retadins were going to share gear with warriors and death knights.
Zarkharaan Jul 30th 2008 8:14PM
Well, I guess they forgot the quest rewards in Outland - plenty of the plate stuff has spellpower.
Chronic Jul 30th 2008 9:42PM
Don't want to re-itemize all the spell power plate - what about holy paladins?
