WoW Insider Show Episode 48: We just can't wait for Lich King
Our latest podcast is now up for your listening enjoyment, but beware: there's an aural bomb hidden inside it -- as we suggested last week, if you listen to the show, you just may hear not only Turpster's famous singing voice, but mine and John Patricelli's as well. Please note: WoW Insider can not be held responsible for any trauma caused by hearing our "Just Can't Wait for Lich King" song. It is scary.- We also chatted about achievements and why I can't wait for them. And I forgot to mention: the best thing about achievements? Blizzard is giving us another ding graphic for them, this time white! I love that graphic!
- We talked about the Authenticator, and how it's not quite as secure as everything thought.
- We all agreed that the mounts and small pets getting out of our bags was a great change.
- Turpster told us about his experience playing the Wrath beta so far and what he thinks of Death Knights and the new zones.
- And we answered a lot of emails: we talked about /played time and why it shouldn't be completely embarrassing, and why raiding isn't quite yet done before the next expansion.
And finally, Turpster has not yet posted the mp3 of our song (though I'm not sure why you'd want to listen to it any more than you have to), but dotOrion on the WoW Radio forums has cut it directly out of the podcast recording, so if you really want an MP3 of the tune (for blackmail purposes or anything else you need it for), there you go.

Loved this week's show!!
Loved the song XD
and yes I agree with Turpster that /played is evil
makishima Jul 30th 2008 2:13PM
lol yeah I became sorely tempted to go through and add all my /played together but, well frankly I don't like crying myself to sleep. In all seriousness though, Schramm had a good point. You shouldn't feel all that bad about the time you've invested in this game as long as you had fun.
makishima Jul 30th 2008 2:10PM
Aww common Mike it wasn't THAT bad.......ok yeah I couldn't get through that with a strait face :P
Great show as always and I really applaud the way you guys avoided as many spoilers as possible. My journey through Northrend will be all the sweeter for it.

Awesome awesome song.
Someone should make a music video from it and post it on youtube!

Are winners publicly announced someplace? I often wonder if anyone wins some of these contests at all.
TotalBiscuit Jul 30th 2008 3:38PM
How incredibly cynical of you. Posting a public list of winners so sore losers can come and harass them is usually not exactly a stroke of genius is it?
Rixen Jul 30th 2008 4:14PM
But.. But.. I want to harass someone :(
And btw, I haven't received that e-mail yet, what are you waiting for?
Brian! Jul 30th 2008 4:18PM
Really? I thought sweepstakes and contests put in things like magazines had to announce the winners. Now, often you have to write in and ask, but I am pretty sure they do that.
I know the lottery announces the winners.
TotalBiscuit Jul 30th 2008 5:14PM
We are not subject to United States sweepstake laws, especially since the podcasts are not commercial productions that you have to pay for. We don't owe any explanation, nor obligation.
Brian! Jul 30th 2008 5:28PM
Biscuit, soooo by not owing any explanation nor obligation (nor giving it) is exactly where I often wonder how many of the contests hosted on the Weblogs network are legit.
I am not saying they are not, but sometimes I wonder.
My curiosity on this started when Massivly began. They ran a series of contests right on top of one another and there were so few comments the chances of winning were incredibly high. In addition, I often look, but rarely see anyone bragging they won. Which considering the sheer amount of people who post "first!" for bragging rights, posting "I won suckers!" seems a natural progression.
Heck, a site covering WoW - even Blizzard posts the winners for their WoW contests. It really does not seem as though "harassing" is an issue anyone else worried about.
Further, all this defensiveness around it makes me wonder even more. After all, if there was nothing to hide...
I smell a ninja.

Here, they announced the winner of the WoW laptop that this site gave away and here is the link to their weblogs profile. http://www.wowinsider.com/profile/1183764/
Happy now? Saying that you suspect these sites of not being honest about these giveaways because TB is defending them("Further, all this defensiveness around it makes me wonder even more. After all, if there was nothing to hide..."), all because you cant take the time to do 5 minutes of searching is really pathetic.
And yes Blizzard lists who won because they ARE subject to United States sweepstakes laws unlike this site.
"It really does not seem as though "harassing" is an issue anyone else worried about."
Well maybe WoW insider IS concerned about it and that's up to them to decide. When Blizzard posts their winners they do it as such http://www.blizzard.com/us/inblizz/contests/artcontest2006/secondaryprizewinners.html
It is just a persons name. There is no way to easily figure out their characters name and harass them in game, no easy way to know if you have the right John Smith if you tried to google them.
But you see how easy it was for me to find the winner of the laptop and if I wanted to harass them every time they posted on the Weblogs network it wouldn't be that hard. And yes TB went on the defensive cause you attacked the honesty and integrity of this site and the people who operate it ("I often wonder if anyone wins some of these contests at all.") in your initial comment.
Lighten up. Just cause you don't win doesn't mean no one does.
Brian! Jul 30th 2008 6:25PM
makishima,
You are right. After a google search on sweepstake law, both US and UK, and for winners on Weblogs, I can find the occasional winner announcement.
Again, I don't think harassment is an issue really. Obviously so if the occasional winner is announced.
Most importantly, Weblogs, Inc (part of AOL) has a clear policy on their giveaways:
http://www.weblogsinc.com/official-giveaway-rules-us/
If you check it out, the Eligibility is probably a big reason why the giveaways directly through WoW Insider are for US only, it is Weblog, Inc policy.
Also, if you do want to know who won, you can write in within 30 days to find out. Good to know. Part of checks and balances and all that.
Look, I didn't even enter this contest. I am skipping the beta myself since I would rather just experience it on release. The post reminded me of a number of other contests from here, Engadget, Massivly, and other Weblogs sites that have a big buzz leading into them but nary a post in return announcing the result. Very anti-climatic.
Imagine raiding where someone got the loot, but the system didn't tell you. I suppose that person could speak up, if they wanted. Now, add in the fact that the raid leader, if they want, can secretly direct that loot to anyone else in the party, yet to everyone else the loot still seems random and unknown.
THEN, to make things more complicated, contests (not being random and based on skill/opinion) are supposed to have all entries evaluated. Yet, it seems US Law still requires winners to be given if requested.
Regardless of legal stuff, I sure would like to see more congrats to winners, especially ones that displayed skill or cleverness to win.
Drhealgood Jul 30th 2008 4:27PM
You should atleast post the winners submission, that way we could see what won and check to make sure ours wasnt picked and our key simply destroyed as spam mail! =P
Peeveepee Jul 30th 2008 5:39PM
Yeah show us his submission please. It would be just mean if you won't
Nesta Jul 31st 2008 8:39AM
"Currently in the Beta the highest DPS class is a Retribution Paladin"
That joke wasn't very funny.
Fiercespade Jul 31st 2008 2:39PM
I put in the winning submission. I only saw the email at noon today and was pleasantly surprised. Thanks guys and Turpster. No need to get too impatient though, I'm sure they'll announce the submission on air as well.
I like the little Arthas text bubble btw.
