Lake Wintergrasp to probably last about 45 minutes, testing coming soon

Zar says that tuning of the zone will be forthcoming (so beta players should expect to see it soon), and that they're working right now on a way to balance differences in team populations -- since the zone isn't instanced, team numbers may be very different, and they're planning to possibly relax requirements to get certain vehicles and goals for the team with fewer players on it. They're also tuning the expected time limit it would take to conquer the whole zone -- right now, they expect the whole event to take about 45 minutes, and then have a certain length of time in between (when people would have "incentives for visiting the zone" -- like the special vendors in Halaa) before it starts again.
Like many players, we can't wait to see what they do with Wintergrasp -- Blizzard is promoting it as the culmination of everything they've learned about World PvP and battlegrounds, so it should definitely be one of the most fun parts of the expansion for battleground fans.

hopefully as fun as they make it sound.

i thought this was gonna be a "lake wintergrasp is nothing special and players should spend about 45min there before they say 'this sucks' and move on to BG honor grinding again" article

I just hope the rewards won't be as crappy as the Halaa rewards were.
Thorall Jul 31st 2008 5:00PM
The problem with Halaa is that the rewards are for about lvl 66 to lvl 69. Which while you are leveling your not interested in. They need to make a pvp zone with lvl 80 rewards so its worth battleing for.
Alch Jul 31st 2008 5:10PM
Even if they had Season 1 gear at Halaa people would fight there. I hope the rewards make people want to bother with the zone.

I never found anything fun about Halaa. And nowadays it's rare to see groups of each faction actually fighting over it. I'm pretty much over all the PVP objectives that involve sitting on something and waiting for the "capture" bar to swing your way. Like the towers in the Bone Wastes -- why would I want to do that more than once a week, at most? A quest for 200 honor? Meh. I know Wintergrasp will be much more involved, but I hope it also has some different mechanics, like destroying structures rather than very slowly capturing them.

Generally I'm more of a PvE player as I find that PvP seems to be somewhat overpopulated by people with prodigious egos desperately trying to prove how big their dicks are. As an idea I thought Halaa was quite good, but for the reasons already mentioned it just didn't work in practice. I will probably give Wintergrasp a go, but I suspect it will become an area that I give a wide berth.

I hope it doesn't disappoint. Ever since the cross-realm battlegrounds were implemented, PvP has lost that "personal grudge" feeling of killing people that you may know from your own server. Here's hoping we get some of that back!

In before Horde wins too much and Alliance boycotts Lake Wintergrasp.
I only hope that these rewards are compelling enough to keep doing them. Example - I would make a point to participate if doing so would earn me something like a badge.
infection Jul 31st 2008 5:17PM
Yeah, and after some time, 70's finally started flowing in with good gear. You couldn't even participate in the halaa event without being 3 shotted.

Getting the Halaa mount would have meant more if it weren't for getting exalted with the Kurenai(Alliance) didn't do the same thing. Meaning that one of the few good rewards from Halaa wasn't necessarily worth it, especially with all the powder collecting required. I miss World PvP that isn't 5 seconds of domination (Horde in Terrokar every day except for early mornings and some late nights).
Either way, excited. Here's hoping its worth it, or even better, Blizzard trys to keep it worthwhile for everyone
Staintd Jul 31st 2008 6:44PM
Come one I want to know the rewards of these thats going to be what matters in the end.
PJ Jul 31st 2008 6:54PM
If people have to walk too long it won't work, people can't be bothered (and the rewards can't be crap, or it is waste of time)
Regis Jul 31st 2008 6:58PM
"culmination of everything they've learned"? Sounds like a recipe for failure, once again.
Shockna Jul 31st 2008 7:36PM
I'm expecting the Horde to completely abandon it after Alliance dominates it the first few days on my realm. (Malygos-US)

I am cautiosly optimistic, but not holding my breath.
In their history, whenever Blizzard tries to add to PvP, they end up taking it away. I think anyone who experienced pre-BG World PvP will tell you that was the golden age of PvP, when people PvP'd (shockingly enough) for fun, not reward. And arenas are just...lol.
But between this and the new BG I'm hoping against hope that WoW PvP might be moving in the right direction. Regardless, this expansion is going to blow TBC away.

I hope each side of the zone isn't a carbon copy of the other. I hate all other BG's except for AV. I wish they would finish the Azshara Crater BG, it's supposed to be a lot like AV.

Let me guess...you play an Alliance character?
