The Eye of Sauron makes an appearance in Wrath of the Lich King

The Eye of Sauron makes an appearance in Wrath of the Lich King in the Death Knight starting zone. It goes under the name of the Eye of Acherus. In the image at the top of the article you can see the two side-by-side – the Eye of Sauron on the left, and the Eye of Acherus on the right. Arthas himself directs you to control it and use it to gather data from New Avalon, a nearby Scarlet Crusade fortification.
Take a look at the gallery below for images of the quest, what you do during it, and how everything appears.

to be honest, i believe that's more of a "Sentry Ward" (from witch docs in wc3) than an eye of sauron :)

LOL at Horde of lawyers, more like an Alliance of legal professionals because everyone knows Horde is to awesome to need lawyers. We would just lay waste to the enemy's capital then proceed to pillage and burn their villages.

If this had been an issue, Blizzard would have been sued for a lot of stealing already. I'll just leave the murlocs as a twitching example.
Oldbear Jul 31st 2008 11:44AM
Is blizzard setting up to get sued? They get made at a company for using their images...
goliathsdkfz Jul 31st 2008 11:58AM
its classic fantasy, its hardly grounds for being sued.
Oneiroi Jul 31st 2008 12:28PM
There are no grounds for it.
People can get in trouble for calling small people in fantasy stuff "hobbits", but you can still use pretty much the exact same features and call them halflings or whatever and get by.
You can also make floating energy eyes without fears of reprisal.

I've heard the copy right laws (here in Canada) allow images and signs to be close to the same - if there is a 10% difference and it doesn't misled the customer.
I know LOTR is classic fantasy - but the movies and the game are recent, plus the copyrights are still owned by the family/estate.
Blizzard's lawyers are quick with the papers - I wouldn't be suprised if LOTR's are too.

I seriously doubt anyone could lay claim to either the idea or depiction of the classic 'evil eye'. It is based on superstitions that go back many thousands of years and certainly predates copyright law. Unless it was obvious copy from a certain film I won't mention, I think any form of lawsuit would be extremely tenuous. Besides, I imagine a company the size of Blizzard has already had its horde of lawyers carefully looking at any potential legal problems

Should JRR Tolkein been sued? The Eye of Sauron sounds an awful lot like the Eye of Ra...
Goo Jul 31st 2008 2:51PM
OMG A copy from lotr? oO Guys pls...no matter how you'll turn that round circle, it'll look the same.
So what they've got an eye ingame...what else could it be? The liver of Acherus? Hmm...how you gonna be able to see with a liver? A flying brain perhaps?
I don't see anything wrong with this at all...there's not many ways of drawing an eye.
...Goo

The liver of Acherus wouldn't break any copyright laws... And I would like to vote "The liver of Acherus" as a new in game item... Not so sure on the stats though.
Oldbear Jul 31st 2008 5:19PM
Does anyone have the rights on the Eye of Ra? If not, we could pick them up and sue alot of people. May get the rights to all things Egyptian and start suing everyone we can... oh, wait. I'm in Canada, we can't sue anyone.
LooLoo Jul 31st 2008 11:45AM
For some reason, "eye" doesn't come to mind.....
Oldbear Jul 31st 2008 11:48AM
that would be "mad" not made...
Aladek Jul 31st 2008 11:58AM
to be honest... they look very little alike. except for being round, and having a slit in the center...
I think your stretching.
Simon Jul 31st 2008 11:52AM
Wow, the "Eye of Acherus" look somewhat like an ... EYE ...
That's pretty wild, and surely copied from somewhere else where some eye looks somewhat like an eye. And there just has to be some copyright on eyes looking somewhat like eyes ... if not even a patent ...
Dan Jul 31st 2008 12:46PM
They are going to invoke the wrath of the original copyright holder on "eyes". I hear that can be pretty severe-- look what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah. And that was just for EULA violations.
Rez Jul 31st 2008 11:58AM
In the current version there also is an mini eye.
If you enter LFG menu and click auto join, you get an mini eye on the edge of your map.
Jackattaak Jul 31st 2008 12:04PM
Also there are eyes on all the toons. Two on each!
