The Eye of Sauron makes an appearance in Wrath of the Lich King

The Eye of Sauron makes an appearance in Wrath of the Lich King in the Death Knight starting zone. It goes under the name of the Eye of Acherus. In the image at the top of the article you can see the two side-by-side – the Eye of Sauron on the left, and the Eye of Acherus on the right. Arthas himself directs you to control it and use it to gather data from New Avalon, a nearby Scarlet Crusade fortification.
Take a look at the gallery below for images of the quest, what you do during it, and how everything appears.

The Eye of Sauron actually looks like an eye, oblong with a vertical slit, the Eye of Acherus looks nothing like an eye, it is Round, no features on the sides of it.
It is more like a really cool marble then an eye. I agree that is stretching it here, are we already so desperate for Wotlk stories we are going there?
Enough already, back to the game that Everyone CAN play NOW.....

'looks nothing like an eye, it is Round'
This is the funniest comment I've read on wowinsider. Someone's never seen an eyeball?

Sorry, but C'Thun is still closer.

It's hard to see in a static image, but it's basically the same model with a blue translucent skin.

It's just the Eye portion of C'thun with a different shader on it.

Adam and everybody, this and they roving eye seen during the quest are just a re-use of the C'thun model from AQ 40.

Eh....I think the similarity is a bit of a stretch, personally.

That quest was hard as hell in its original version. They didn't give you any instructions for how to control the Eye. Thankfully, it's been Patched.

this Eye of Acherus looks more labial then ocular

The Eye of Sauron is a "lidless eye wreathed in flame" while the Eye of Acherus is a "spectral eye wreathed in magical energies". The EoA doesn't really even have a discernable pupil. It does vaguely resemble the Eye from LOTR but I think Adam is trying to make a connection where none exists.

Should we be worried if one of these starts showing up over capitol cities?

The eye of Acherus is actually not a reference to Sauron, but I believe something different from what the forums say.
