WoW inspires military training environments
It's probably fair to take bets on how many Beltway Insiders are aware of MMORPGs, or even WoW specifically. (At least one or two can be found in Azeroth, at least.) It's certainly clear, however, that Dr. Roger Smith, a senior game designer for the Army, has some passing familiarity on the idea.According to Dr. Smith, an MMORPG environment would be a great always-on option to provide training to the troops. Specifically, he says "something like World of Warcraft, but focused on the military training customer." You can even check out his public PDF on work he's already done on this kind of training environment.
The always-on world would provide training scenarios even outside the usual tactical simulation. Your avatars could interact with cultural representations, learning the fine points of behavior while interacting in foreign environments. Want to get your team a dose of decision-making expertise? Set up the environment to run reactions based on criteria you devise. And we definitely know WoW can teach you about a fictional history, maybe Dr. Smith's could help the soldier with some real-world equivalents.
We've all heard about the government exploring virtual worlds before, but we don't often hear that exploration directly connected to WoW. But if 10 million people -- including soldiers -- love us some WoW, maybe there's something in the formula Dr. Smith can use.

I doubt it. Every time someone in AV says "let them win, faster honor" I can't help but think that in the military their commanding officer would have them dragged out and shot for treason.

I work at the Canadian Armed Forces Base in Kingston, and I work in the DLSE sector (Directorate of Land Software Engineering), which basically builds and programs virtual terrains to be used by the military to run simulation exercises from real map data. the concept of using a MMORPG to train troops could, in theory, work, but the only connection it would have with WoW would be the idea of connecting everyone in a real time environment. The graphics wouldn't need to be improved, but all the models, the interface and the environment would need to be rebuilt. Essentially the only thing the same would be the game engine and the idea. (That's right! No gold spammers!)

Thank you for providing an informed perspective on this.

So I checked out the link, and come to find out I know a bit about the program mentioned in the PDF (I'll leave it at that)... With the exception of America's Army, I know gov't doesn't have the resources or the talent to produce something on a level with WoW. I mean I know they have the coders, but they don't hire coders with an artist/design design sense; everything ends up in Java or looking horrible like screenshot in the PDF.
I would like to find out some more information about how Blizzard handles their servers, how the network passes traffic (instances, etc), because that stuff intrigues the hell out of me...

Tack on the fact that they're not going to pay to license a game engine (there are exceptions), so everything is going to be custom and suffer from feature creep with EVERY iteration. Plus they've always complained about 'entity count', and just imagine if they tried to handle the # of entities on a single server in WoW.

I play Horde so I am confused as to why a Gnome General is wearing a bikini.

Belbi's Eyesight Enhancing Romance Goggles.
Makes everyone look like a gnome male in leather ... gear.

Brewfest last year had an item: Beer Goggles (basically) that make all humanoids look like gnomes. Kinda freaky.

Yeah I thought that might be it, but you never know with you Alliance types. I'm just sayin'.

.. those guys are just pulling your chain with the goggles thing..
The TRUTH is this: You have heard of old ironforge? its an area you can get to via the kings throne room in IF and some abuse of a spot in IF where you can start duels - well down in there are some rather... amusing things the designers put in obviously for a laugh - this gnome bondage session is one of them -_-

There are a couple active duty people in my guild- and a couple in my other pvp guild. It's not unusual.

WoW didnt inspire this "military training enviroment", the guy was using it as an example of what he thinks it would be like.
Its more like MMOs are inspiring the military training enviroment.
