WarcraftStat for the iPhone checks realm status for you
Not to be outdone by yesterday's Characters app for the iPhone, Michael Gaines has posted his own WoW app to the iTunes App Store, this one tracking server status easily and quickly in iPhone format. WarcraftStat is as simple as they come -- you get a list of all the servers, their PvP/PvE designation, their population label, and the little arrows found on the usual realm status page showing whether you're good to go for ganking noobs in Westfall, or the realm is still down.Unfortunately, all of the realms are a little much -- I'd kind of rather choose a couple of pertinent realms to me and only see those on the page. And notification of when a realm goes up or down might be nice, too, not to mention that the app is currently US realms only. But as an app that tells you whether realms are up or down, WarcraftStat does its job. It's on the App Store right now, and available for a free download.
[ Thanks, Brad! ]

There's a Firefox plugin that does this too...it's kind of annoying. I hope the iPhone app is a little closer to realtime than its firefox counterpart.

I personally stopped caring about Realm status a long time ago...I don't know if it's because my server is never down or what, but it just seems like somebody spend time on a worthless app. I'll wait for somebody to roll this into an all inclusive WoW type iPhone app.

Agree.
I know my realms will be down while I'm at work on Tuesday.
I know there may be a random moment every few months where the realm goes down for a few minutes some evening.
Besides that, the realms are up.

Thanks for the review :D
Yes, the ability to have certain realms at the top is coming. You can't request the stat of one or two servers, you get the whole thing at once. Fortunately, the stats come in rather quickly and there's not a lot of data to parse.
That said, the way the data's formatted is different for each of the server groups (US, EU, OC). You literally need three different types of XML parsers for each group which is why I stuck with just US for now.

I'd really like to see an app that tells me if my friends on various servers are online.

Or a way to hang out in the guildchat without having to use the full game client.

Honestly I think if I need that sort of thing for my mobile phone I really should check myself in for therapy. Never before has the phrase "its just a game" been more important...

I downloaded it just to have something WoW-related on my phone. It's nothing serious, just cute.
