Yes, you could call it a tossed salad if you want to. No metaphor is going to cover every aspect of roleplaying. The purpose of this one is to emphasize the way it can feel decentralized and centralized at the same time. If you want to emphasize the way it changes over time as different people move into and out of the centers of attention, then a river would be better. It all depends on which aspect you're looking at.
