Mixology effect deemed not terrible
Recently in the Wrath of the Lich King beta, Alchemists were given a Passive ability called Alchemical Blood. More recently it was renamed to Mixology. Mixology's tooltip states, "You receive an increased effect when you drink any elixir or flask you are able to make."Not bad! I mean, it sounds not bad. It doesn't really say what that effect is. A few guildmates and I decided to do a little bit of testing to figure it out, though. Using a few high-end Burning Crusade elixirs and low-end Wrath elixirs, we came to the conclusion that the bonus is around 25%. I would say 25% on the dot, but we ran into some conflicting numbers. Nearly 30% in one case, a little under 25% in another. That was probably the result of talents altering the outcome.
With the same 25% applying to flasks, that would add another +20 Damage to the Caster DPS flasks. Flask of Pure Death, for example, would now supply +100 Shadow, Fire and Frost damage. Not a bad deal, really. 20 damage doesn't quite match up to an Enchanter's ring enchants, but I think Wrath's Crazy Alchemist Potions will make up for that. Wild Magic, anyone?

Not bad. It'll be nice to see that for potions. . .oh, wait, potions aren't really going to matter much.
Mats Aug 3rd 2008 2:28PM
Sooo, you get this AND a kickass trinket?
Jack Spicer Aug 3rd 2008 4:28PM
I'm willing to bet that if this goes live, the trinkets will no longer have the additional benefit from potions.
Knucker Aug 3rd 2008 11:46PM
For a druid, the trinket does not exactly "kick ass" and is not really worth the mats.
Knucker Aug 3rd 2008 11:47PM
Feral druid* Sorry

Yeah, it looks pretty awesome for raiding alchemists, and I'm excited about the change.
I don't see why the potion buff would be removed, though?
Trinket = Potions
This = Elixirs
Besides, with only 1 potion per combat in WotK, the buff from the trinket will be negligible.
Assuming there isn't something I'm missing, I am definitely switching to Elixirs (from Potions), or dropping alchemy altogether.

I'm so stumped on whether to stay with tailor/ench for WotLK or to swap to alchemy (maybe with herbalism) for my mage. Guess I'll have to wait for more details on tail/ench stuff in the x-pac.

Do like the look of this. Very simple way of giving alchemists something for having the talent. Not to moan (too much) but gief something for blacksmiths too!
I know it's off topic but a suggestion:
Weapon tempering. Adds 5 damage to weapon. (not dps! damage).
Weapon balancing. Allows blacksmith to add/remove .1 from the swing speed. (might need damage to change automatically as a result or would likely make some weapons overpowered).
I know thats tricky as it gives a mass of extra meta-data for the database to keep track of. There's enough wee things like it in already though.
But yeah, back on topic, big thumbs up for this.

I'd just like to see Blacksmiths being able to REPAIR their own items, instead of having to use an NPC one.
Rocklifter Aug 3rd 2008 8:12PM
Hear hear!
I've been wishing for smiths to be able to repair armor/weapons for a long, long time time. Seems like a natural expansion of the skill.
Reric Aug 4th 2008 9:17AM
I don't see them ever allowing blacksmiths being able to repair their items for free. I feel like they use repair costs as a money sink. Something that would be interesting is if they just made a passive ability for blacksmiths that made all your durability hits only be half of normal. So if you died you would only take a 5% hit as opposed to 10%. Call it something like Maintenance or something

My Alchie is happy.

All gathering professions look like they are getting buffs:
Mining:
Miner's Revenge (Rank 1) 10 Hurls your pick axe at the target, inflicted 45 to 55 physical damage, ignoring any armor. (Unconfirmed as possible mining skill) (5 min cooldown, 30 yd range) Requires Mining Pick
Toughness (Rank 1) All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 3. None
Toughness (Rank 2) All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 5. None
Toughness (Rank 3) All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 7. None
Toughness (Rank 4) All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 10. None
Toughness (Rank 5) All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 20. None
Toughness (Rank 6) All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 35.
Skinning:
Master of Anatomy (Rank 1) Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 3. None
Master of Anatomy (Rank 2) Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 6. None
Master of Anatomy (Rank 3) Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 9. None
Master of Anatomy (Rank 4) Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 12. None
Master of Anatomy (Rank 5) Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 15. None
Master of Anatomy (Rank 6) Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 25.
So far, nothing listed for herbalism, I would say they should get any buffs, since herbalism is going to be a Big $$ due to it being the gathering skill of choice for inscriptions.

Crazy alchemist's pot doesn't give health and mana like mad alchemist's does, but just the random buff? Yeah - that IS crazy...
Guess all that pot is good for then is leveling alchemy. Who wants a random buff which may overwrite your elixir buffs on a 2 minute cooldown, especially during a boss fight?
Eamara Aug 3rd 2008 3:40PM
It isn't the same as Mad Alchemists though. It gives a short duration buff, as opposed to the buff you receive from an elixir. It's more comparable to a haste potion or destruction potion.
Faar Aug 3rd 2008 3:46PM
Ah, I see. Well, it's still virtually worthless I'd say, if they keep the limit on 1 pot only per fight.
Pat Aug 3rd 2008 3:47PM
It's about as useful as Noggenfogger Elixer, only you get to craft it.
Think of it as comfy insoles only with a kick.
JBurg Aug 3rd 2008 3:35PM
I wonder if this will make taking up alchemy for mixology the "took up leatherworking for drums" of WotLK?
Eamara Aug 3rd 2008 3:44PM
Doubtful. Every other profession is getting comparable buffs: LWing gets drums and crafter-only leg patches; I assume Tailoring will get the same, crafter-only leg patches; Jewelcrafting's BoP gems are getting a "huge" buff, and are actually worth using now for all classes and specs; and you already know about the gathering profession passive buffs.
Blizzard are trying to avoid forcing everyone to re-roll one profession, just for one specific buff. From what I've seen so far, their plan is working.

I hope they remove the discovery mechanic if this sticks - several thousand mana pots and elixirs later and I've discovered every single flask except for the one that my alchemist makes use of. :/
