Blizzard shows off Recruit-a-Friend benefits: Zhevra mount, summoning, triple experience

There's a new splash screen on the WoW homepage, but instead of hinting at a new game, it is instead showing off Blizzard's new Recruit-a-Friend benefits. Looks like they found a place for that Zhevra mount we heard about a while back -- whenever you recruit a friend into the game (by convincing them to create an account with your name as a reference and having them pay for at least two months of game time), you can choose one of your characters to nab a Zhevra mount. Additionally, you can summon referred friends to your character, and when questing together, you can pick up triple experience until level 60, for both quests and monsters that you kill together.
More details on Blizzard's support page. Just yesterday, we heard Mike Morhaime saying Blizzard was aiming to bring tons of people into the game this holiday season, and it looks like the recruiting drive has started.

Erm, triple exp they say? ALL the time?!
"What the sh-t!" I say! Aren't I paying enough already to have earned such benefits also?! I've been a facking paying customer since feb 2005.
Seriously, a betelgeuse-sized screw you to Kaplan and the rest of those tw@s at blizzard if they decide to discriminate like this against their own existing customers.

Calm down... it's limited to 90 days since your friend starts playing.
Also you have to be grouped with them and finish quests around the same time.
And if mobs or quests are gray to either of you then the lower-level player doesn't get the bonus.

Ugh. I hate to admit it but this really dissapoints me because my friend just recruited me to play with him on the EU server about 2 months ago. I'm just entering into my first paid month here, and We both Just hit 60. If we would of waited a few more months it would of been alot faster to hit 60, I could of buffed his hunter or rogue Alt to 60, and we would of gotten to ride around on Zebras also?! Feh. :\ How lame. I hope they offer up a retro-active way to apply this.

US only, right?
Right
dAnixx Aug 6th 2008 7:42AM
Also, for every two levels of experience your friend earns, they can grant one level of experience to one of your lower-level characters.
This means 1lvl 70 character = 1lvl 35 character.
Must buy chinese friend
Robert Aug 8th 2008 3:04PM
Not exactly. It only works until your friend is 60 and once your friend hits 60 those free levels are lost if they aren't spent
Escobar Aug 6th 2008 8:02AM
I just hope the veteran player has to accept the free level first. I'm not referring anyone if they have the power to ruin my oh-so-sacred twinks :)
Ilias Aug 6th 2008 8:03AM
So i can like recruit my friend, have him level up to 70. And let him give me an extra 35 lvls for free....?
Omg, i can lvl my deathknight up to 70 in a second.....
Jeni Aug 6th 2008 10:52AM
You guys don't read the fine print. This only works up to level 60. The friend can only grant levels to characters below them up to level 60. You can only level your deathknight for 5 levels.
AND it has to be during the 90 day link between accounts. If you do this now, the link ends in 3 months. Wrath won't be out until Nov/Dec

How long has this promotion been going on? I was running mad AVs on Monday and I would swear on my life that I saw an orc on a zhevra.

The first comment on this topic says "MOAR MONEH FOR BLIZZARD! ;O", and even though that's not directly an argument or point, I feel like agreeing with it.
I'm just not sure I like the whole principle of Recruit-A-Friend. If you get a friend to try the game, Blizzard gets some money and your friend gets to try the game you enjoy so much and maybe he will enjoy it himself. But do you need to get some exclusive item yourself? To be honest, that seems like a bit selfish. Not that I blame players who take advantage of the R-A-F, but it screams "give us more money!" a bit too much. Even though it is not the same thing, it almost reminds me a bit of those online-games where you get gold or XP by having other people click a link (GanstaWars).
As someone has already pointed, this can be abused by players who make a "fake" account or multiboxers.
But I guess Blizzard needs more money. Hell, everyone needs more money. The drug-abuser needs more money. I need more money.
mrklotz Aug 7th 2008 9:51AM
multiboxing, anyone?

@ILikePvPbuthatePvPers - Sure it did - Blizzard is not going to admit to you that some of us cancelled our accounts for LoTRO, but some of us did. AoC got some folks too - 40% came back, but 60% did not. What you have to understand is that no ONE game is going to overtake WoW in worldwide subscriptions. But SEVERAL existing and soon-to-come games, when put together, WILL take a sizeable chunk of WoW's Western sub numbers (North America and Western Europe). The West is WoW's oldest, and most fatigued, market. After spending nearly a year in beta in 2004 and then playing the live game for 3.5 years we finally just sort had enough of Blizzard's modus operandi.
@Caleb - Yeah, I think that a good number of the hard-core PvP players may certainly leave for WAR, or at least pay for both games simultaneously. After all, you only have to Arena for an hour or two a week, and unless you like raiding or faction grinding you have nothing else to do. Why not WAR? Nothing I have heard or seen about Lake Wintergrasp brings it in line with the large-scale PvP objectives in WAR. It is Halaa with siege engines and a reset timer.
At any rate those of us who actually liked the old honor ranking system will be powerfully attracted to WAR and its reknown system, and the constantly available RvR (presumably without 20-50% of the players in the RvR area afk humping a tree).

If they were to designate all proceeds to solely benefit the upcoming film, i wouldnt have an objection.

An email from Blizzard confirms that the mount is an epic mount only -- You have to be sixty to use it.

WARNING:
To all the people saying "Anyone want to recruit me, I'm not calling you liars or cheaters here, but I'm going to point out a possible scam, just to keep people safe.
If you buy somebody a gamecard to "recruit" them, it is quite possible they already have a main account, and will use your gamecard to create a new alt account and link it with their main, so they will get both benefits at no cost.
I'm not saying that they are all trying to do this, I'm just pointing this out to make sure that you think about what you are doing. Don't let the shiney benefits blind you from the fact that there are bad people out there.
Siara Aug 7th 2008 7:22PM
Too bad not all players can do this. Atleast not in the EU. Sad to get excited about it and then find out you cant access this service because you don't live in one of the "chosen" countries.. Damn blizz.. :D
bendistraw Aug 7th 2008 7:39PM
From the fine print:
"Also, if the two characters are not the same level, only the lower-level character is given the experience boost.
Is quest experience tripled too?
Yes, but only if the quest was not trivial (gray difficulty) for either character."
The benefits of XP seem worthless if your a 60 and the new account is lvl 1 (has to be cause its a new account). Its good for starting a new toon though.
